How Much Does Umrah Cost? A Full UK Price Guide

Umrah from the UK costs £499 to £2,549 per person, depending almost entirely on when you go and how close to the Haram you sleep.

Most people pay somewhere between £545 and £825. The cheapest complete package we sell is £499 for seven nights, and the most expensive standard option is £2,549 for three weeks at five star spanning the last ten nights of Ramadan.

The number people actually need

A package price is not the cost of your trip. Once you add the mandatory vaccine, travel insurance, food, laundry, local taxis and getting to your UK airport, a realistic all-in figure for one adult on a ten night three star package is £845 to £1,120.

That is the figure to plan with. Everything below explains how it is built and what moves it.

The short version

Cheapest complete package: £499 for 7 nights, 3 star, off-peak.

Most common: £545 to £825, covering 10 to 14 nights at 3 to 5 star.

Realistic all-in for one adult: £845 to £1,120 on a ten night trip.

Ramadan last ten nights: from £1,199, and up to £1,749 at 5 star.

Family of four: nowhere near four times the adult rate, because of child rates and quad sharing.

Every package holds on a £99 deposit with interest-free instalments available.

What the tiers actually mean

Distance, mostly. Star ratings in Makkah are assigned locally and a three star property is generally clean, modern and functional. What you buy at the higher tiers is metres to the Haram rather than a better building.

The two things driving all of it

Hotel scarcity in Makkah, which peaks in Ramadan, and the UK school calendar, which peaks at Christmas and in August. Everything else is noise.

If you can travel outside both, you pay the floor. Seasonal detail on the winter, Ramadan and Eid pages.

One window worth knowing about

Eid and after. Fourteen nights spanning Eid morning and the fortnight afterwards is £969, which works out at £69 a night. The entire Ramadan crowd leaves within seventy-two hours of Eid and the city empties around you.

What is included in the price

Eight things. If a package is missing any of them it is not a complete package, whatever the heading says.

  • Return flights from your nearest UK airport, one ticket, bags checked through
  • Hotel in Makkah, named in writing with the distance in metres
  • Hotel in Madinah, same detail
  • Saudi Umrah visa, submitted through Nusuk and tracked to approval
  • Airport to hotel transfer on arrival
  • Makkah to Madinah transfer, about four and a half hours by coach
  • Hotel to airport transfer at the end
  • Guided Ziyarat in both cities

The two most commonly missing elsewhere

The Makkah to Madinah transfer and the visa. Together they are around a quarter of a £499 package, which is exactly the size of saving that makes a competing quote look impressive.

The full comparison checklist is on the flights and hotel page.

The thing that surprises people

The hotel is the smallest meaningful line. People assume they are mostly paying for the hotel and mostly they are paying for the aeroplane.

Why that matters

Because it tells you a two hundred pound saving on a five hundred pound product is not possible on a comparable package. There is not enough margin for it.

The full breakdown, including why Ramadan multiplies the hotel line while the flight barely moves, is in our price breakdown post.

Cost for a family

The calculation people get most wrong.

Do not multiply by four

Children aged two to eleven pay a reduced rate when sharing with two adults. Under twos travel as lap infants for a nominal fare. Twelve and over pay the adult rate.

And quad sharing means one room for four people rather than two rooms, so the hotel cost is divided rather than doubled.

What that means in practice

A family of four with children aged six and nine comes in well under four times the adult figure. Send us exact ages and we will build the real number, because the guess is always higher than the answer.

The two things that change it

Exact ages, because the gap between an eleven year old and a twelve year old is a few hundred pounds and a birthday between booking and travel counts.

And room configuration. Six people do not fit in a quad, so five or six travellers need two rooms and the per person cost moves more than any tier upgrade would.

The deposit

£99 per person, so £396 secures a family of four.

Cost by airport

We price every UK airport identically as a package, so any difference you see is the underlying fare rather than a regional markup.

The pattern

Off-peak, £700 buys you most of the range. In Ramadan or at Christmas the same money buys nothing at all. That is why the honest answer to how much does Umrah cost always begins with a question about when.

Two of these brackets have their own deeper pieces: under £700 and under £1,000.

How people pay for it

The deposit

£99 per person holds any package at the price quoted. The balance is due eight weeks before departure, which is when the airline and hotel want their money and applies whoever you book with.

Without interest

Nobody needs interest-bearing credit to perform Umrah. Save first, use the deposit and instalments, use a community saving arrangement, or pool as a family. All four are covered properly in our budget guide.

Is Umrah getting more expensive?

The direction

Upward over any multi-year view, and driven mostly by hotels. Makkah has been rebuilding around the Haram for two decades and the properties replacing the old ones are larger, newer and more expensive.

What has pushed the other way

Saudi Arabia has widened access considerably, with more visa routes, longer permitted stays and travel around the Kingdom permitted on an Umrah visa. More travellers has meant more airline capacity, and more capacity has held fares down.

What we would expect

Hotel costs to keep rising faster than flight costs, so the premium for being close to the Haram widens rather than narrows. If proximity matters to you, sooner is generally the better bet than waiting and saving more.

That is a view rather than a forecast. Anybody offering a confident prediction about travel prices three years out is guessing.

How to tell a bad price from a good one

Given everything above, a quote well below the market usually means one of four things.

  1. The hotel is further out than you think. The most common answer, because hotel cost falls sharply with distance.
  2. The flight is two tickets rather than one. A self-transfer, where bags do not check through and a delay is entirely your problem.
  3. Something is missing. Most often the Makkah to Madinah transfer or the visa.
  4. It is land only. No flights at all, presented as though it were a full package.

The five questions

  1. Which hotel, and how many metres from the Haram? Not minutes.
  2. Is the flight one ticket with bags checked through to Jeddah?
  3. Are all three transfers included, including Makkah to Madinah?
  4. Is the visa cost inside the price, and will you submit it?
  5. What room configuration is that price based on?

A quote answering all five clearly is comparable to another that does. One that does not is a number rather than a package.

Three things nobody can sell you at any price

A guaranteed Rawdah slot, which is free through the Nusuk app. Priority access at the Haram, which does not exist. And a visa cheaper than anybody else’s, because the fee is set by the Saudi Ministry.

The cheapest way to do it properly

If cost is the main constraint, these five decisions in this order will get you the lowest defensible price.

  1. Travel in January or November. Saves up to £300 against Christmas for the identical trip, and costs you nothing but flexibility.
  2. Take quad sharing. Saves £180 to £340 per person, and free if you were going to share anyway.
  3. Book three to four months ahead. Fares rise as departure approaches. Six months or more for Ramadan and December.
  4. Go longer rather than fancier, in winter only. £45 a night at fourteen nights against £71 at seven.
  5. Fly from your nearest airport with a direct service where you have the choice.

And the one thing not to cut

Proximity, in summer or Ramadan. In those windows distance stops being a comfort question. Full reasoning on the economy page and the cheap packages page.

How we set them

We check comparable UK packages every month and sit £20 under the lowest we can find for the same nights and the same hotel tier. No introductory rate, no code that expires, and no price that rises once you have shown interest.

And the price we quote when you pay your £99 is the price you pay, however long the balance takes.

Umrah costs: 74 questions answered

Grouped by topic. Direct answer first. Prices are per person, quad sharing, unless stated.

The headline numbers

How much does Umrah cost from the UK?

£499 to £2,549 per person depending on when you go and how close to the Haram you stay. Most people pay between £545 and £825.

What is the cheapest Umrah package?

£499 for seven nights at three star, off-peak, including flights, visa, both hotels, all transfers and Ziyarat.

What is a realistic total cost?

£845 to £1,120 for one adult on a ten night three star trip, once you add the vaccine, insurance, food and everything else.

What is the average cost?

Most bookings land between £545 and £825 for the package, which covers ten to fourteen nights across the three tiers.

What is the most expensive standard package?

£2,549 for twenty-one days at five star spanning the last ten nights of Ramadan.

How much for ten nights?

£545 at three star, £679 at four star, £745 at five star.

How much for fourteen nights?

£625 at three star, £769 at four star, £825 at five star.

How much for twenty-one days?

£789 at three star, £969 at four star, £1,049 at five star.

Is the price per person or per room?

Per person, on quad sharing. Everywhere in this market.

How much is the deposit?

£99 per person.

What changes the price

What is the biggest factor?

The month. The same seven night three star package is £499 in January and £1,199 in the last ten nights of Ramadan.

What is the second biggest?

How close your hotel is to the Haram. That is what the tiers actually buy.

What is the cheapest month?

January and November, both from £499.

What is the most expensive?

The last ten nights of Ramadan, from £1,199, then Christmas and New Year from £799.

Why is Ramadan so much more?

Hotel scarcity. There is a finite number of rooms near the Haram and demand arrives from every Muslim country at once.

Does the flight go up in Ramadan?

Yes, but not by that order. It might move from around £240 to £340 on a package that has risen by seven hundred.

Does duration change the price much?

Less than people expect. Fourteen nights is £126 more than seven, because the flight is fixed and hotel nights are cheap at the margin.

Does the airport change the price?

The underlying fare varies, but we price every UK airport identically as a package.

Do weekday flights cost less?

Usually, and a day of flexibility either side is worth checking.

Does booking early save money?

Yes. Three to four months ahead for normal dates, six or more for Ramadan and December.

What is included

What do I get for £499?

Return flights, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, the Saudi visa, all three ground transfers and guided Ziyarat in both cities.

Are flights included?

Yes, on one ticket with bags checked through.

Is the visa included?

Yes, submitted through Nusuk and tracked to approval.

How much is the Saudi visa on its own?

Around £88 to £96 including mandatory Saudi health insurance. It is a government fee and nobody can discount it.

Are transfers included?

All three. Airport to hotel, Makkah to Madinah, and hotel to airport.

Is Ziyarat included?

Yes, guided, in both cities.

Is breakfast included?

At most four and five star properties. It varies at three star, so we confirm it per hotel.

Is food included?

Beyond breakfast, no. Budget £120 to £200 for ten days eating locally.

Which items do other agencies leave out?

The Makkah to Madinah transfer and the visa, most commonly. Together they are about a quarter of the price.

The costs outside the package

What else do I have to pay for?

The vaccine, travel insurance, food beyond breakfast, laundry, local taxis, a SIM if you want one, and getting to your UK airport.

How much is the vaccine?

£50 to £80 privately. Meningococcal ACWY is a visa requirement and many GP practices charge for it.

How much is travel insurance?

£25 to £50 for a standard trip, more for over 65s or pre-existing conditions.

How much should I take as spending money?

Around £200 to £350 for a ten night trip covering food, taxis and laundry, plus whatever you set aside for gifts.

How much do people spend on shopping?

£100 to £400 per family is a sensible planning figure. Almost nobody comes home having bought nothing.

Is Zamzam free?

The water inside the Haram is. The official five litre bottle to bring home is bought at the Saudi airport counters and carried free on the main carriers.

Do I need to pay for a Rawdah permit?

No. It is free through the Nusuk app and cannot be sold by anybody.

What is the total including everything?

£845 to £1,120 for one adult, ten nights, three star, before shopping.

Where the money goes

What is the biggest cost in a package?

The flight, at roughly half.

How much of it is the hotel?

Twelve to fourteen per cent across both cities on quad sharing, which is less than people expect.

Why is the hotel share so small?

Because quad sharing divides the room four ways and a three star property some distance out is not expensive off-peak.

How much is the agency margin?

Typically under ten per cent on a package of this kind, and thinner on some departures.

So can anyone be £200 cheaper?

Not on a comparable package. There is not enough margin in the business for it.

Family costs

How much is Umrah for a family of four?

Well under four times the adult rate. Children two to eleven pay a reduced rate sharing with two adults and quad sharing means one room.

How much do children cost?

Under twos travel as lap infants for a nominal fare. Two to elevens get a reduced rate. Twelve and over pay adult.

Why do you need exact ages?

Because eleven and twelve price differently by a few hundred pounds, and a birthday between booking and travel counts.

What if we are five or six people?

Six do not fit in a quad, so you need two rooms and the per person cost changes more than any tier upgrade.

How much deposit for a family of four?

£396, being £99 each.

Is it cheaper to travel as a group?

On hotels usually, because we can block-book rooms. On flights rarely, because airlines price seats individually.

By budget

What does £500 get me?

Seven nights at three star off-peak. Nothing at all in Ramadan or at Christmas.

What does £700 get me?

Off-peak, almost anything including five star for a week. In August, three star for seven nights and nothing over.

What does £1,000 get me?

Twenty-one days, or a hotel under 200 metres for ten nights, or Ramadan first ten nights at four star.

What does £1,500 get me?

Kaaba view for a fortnight off-peak, or the last ten nights of Ramadan at three star.

What if I only have £400?

You are short of the floor. Save toward £499 in January, or ask us about a shorter trip.

Is there a package under £499?

Not a complete one from us. Below that, something is missing or the hotel is a long way out.

Paying

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes, interest free, when you book four or more months ahead.

What would that be per month?

A £499 package booked twelve months out is £99 down and around £40 a month.

How much should I save per month?

For the full realistic total, £70 to £93 a month over a year, or £47 to £62 over eighteen months.

Can I pay without interest?

Yes. Nobody needs interest-bearing credit for this. Our instalments carry no interest, fees or credit check.

When is the balance due?

Eight weeks before departure.

What if I book inside eight weeks?

The balance is already due, so it needs paying in full. See the last minute page.

Will the price change while I pay?

No. The price quoted when you pay your £99 is the price you pay.

Checking a quote

How do I know if a price is fair?

Compare it against the tables above for the same month, tier and duration, then ask the five questions.

What are the five questions?

Which hotel and how many metres, is the flight one ticket, are all three transfers included, is the visa in the price, and what room configuration.

Why metres rather than minutes?

Minutes are elastic. A five minute walk at 2am in October is fifteen at Maghrib in Ramadan.

What does a suspiciously cheap quote usually mean?

A distant hotel, a two-ticket flight, a missing component, or land only.

What is a self-transfer?

Two separate tickets. Bags do not check through and a delay on the first leg is entirely your problem.

Can anyone guarantee me a Rawdah slot?

No, at any price. Permits are free through Nusuk.

Can I send you a competing quote?

Yes, through Beat My Quote. We price under it and tell you whether it is genuinely comparable.

Trends

Is Umrah getting more expensive?

Over any multi-year view, yes, driven mostly by hotel costs in Makkah.

What has held prices down?

Wider access and more airline capacity on the routes, which has restrained fares.

Should I go sooner or save more?

Generally sooner, because hotel costs near the Haram have risen faster than flight costs. Waiting rarely makes the trip cheaper.

Will prices drop after Ramadan?

Sharply. Mid-March into April is one of the cheapest stretches of the year.

What is the cheapest way to do it properly?

January or November, quad sharing, booked three to four months ahead, and longer rather than fancier because the walk is comfortable in winter.

Where can I read more?
