Winter is the season where booking early matters least, and there is one fortnight inside it where it matters more than almost anywhere else.
Winter has the best conditions of the year. Makkah at 20 to 32 degrees, the longest nights, the quietest Haram, and the floor price of £499.
And it is the easiest season in the calendar to book. November has genuine availability at good properties three or four weeks out, which is not true of any other month.
Because there is no global demand event in the winter cycle at present, only one UK school holiday, and Britain spends January recovering from December rather than booking travel.
Christmas. It is the tightest winter window and it needs booking by September, which is three months earlier than the rest of the season.
So the honest answer for winter is: book three months out unless you want Christmas or you want to spread the cost.
The short version Most of winter needs three months, and November genuinely works at four weeks. Christmas needs September, which is the one exception and it is a large one. Winter runs £499 to £799, and only the Christmas fortnight is at the top of that. Booking a year ahead for a £499 November trip ties up money for no benefit, unless you want the payment plan. The two traps: January’s first six days and a December trip crossing the 17th. |
Ask us how far ahead you actually need to book
Which weeks need what lead time. This is the whole practical content of the page.
Window | From | Book by | Late availability |
|---|---|---|---|
November | £499 | Three months. Four weeks works | The best in the year |
1 to 17 December | £499 | Three months | Reasonable |
18 December to 3 January | £799 | September | Very limited |
4 to 9 January | £799 | September | Very limited |
From around 10 January | £499 | Three months | Good |
Early February | £529 | Three months | Good |
Ten of the twelve winter weeks need three months and are forgiving beyond that. Two of them need six and are not.
It is not just Christmas week. The pricing runs from schools breaking up around 17 December through to the first week of January, which is about eighteen days.
And it is the second most expensive window in the calendar after the last ten nights of Ramadan. Detail in our Christmas booking guide.
November, early December, mid to late January and early February are among the easiest bookings in the year. Broad availability, floor pricing, and genuine choice three months out.
A ten night trip departing 8 December returns on the 18th and gets the floor price. Departing on the 12th, it returns on the 22nd and the whole booking prices at the Christmas rate.
And in January the first six days are still Christmas pricing at £799. The floor does not return until around the 10th.
In the current cycle Ramadan sits in February and Hajj in May. So the winter months have nothing in them that draws pilgrims from every origin simultaneously.
That is the single biggest reason. It will change as the Islamic calendar moves, and for now it holds.
Christmas is the only UK school break in the whole season. November has none at all, which makes it the emptiest month in the calendar.
Compare that to spring, which has February half term and Easter, or the autumn, which has October half term.
Said plainly. The country has just spent on Christmas and the appetite for a significant purchase is at its annual low, which suppresses UK demand for the cheapest month of the year.
A genuine factor. In February and March people are escaping the tail end of a British winter. In November it is grey rather than punishing and the pull is weaker.
From September through December, operators are busy booking the following Ramadan and Christmas. Nobody is promoting the month they are currently in.
A season with the best conditions in the year, the lowest prices, and almost no competition for the hotels. Which is an unusual combination in any travel market.
The section that costs us nothing and is worth saying.
It fixes your price and it commits your money. On a peak window that is a good trade because the price would otherwise rise substantially and the hotel would go.
Very little. November is £499 twelve months out and £499 three months out, because there is nothing pushing it up.
So booking a year ahead locks a price that was not going to move, in a month where the hotels were not going to run out.
Flexibility. Circumstances change over a year and a deposit is committed at the moment you pay it. On a peak window that risk is worth taking. On an uncontested month it usually is not.
Three months out for most of winter. That gets you full choice of hotel, the floor price, and you are close enough to your travel date to know your circumstances.
If you want to spread the cost, book early anyway. Not for availability, for the payment plan. There is a section on that below.
Because we told you Ramadan needs a year and summer needs seven months, and both are true. If we said the same about November it would be obvious sales advice and you would rightly discount everything else.
The genuine reason, and for a lot of households the only one that matters.
A £99 deposit and the balance spread interest free across the months to eight weeks before departure. A £499 package booked a year out is around £40 a month. Booked at three months it is £200.
Package | Booked 12 months out | Booked 6 months out | Booked 3 months out |
|---|---|---|---|
3 star, 7 nights, £499 | About £40 a month | About £100 a month | About £200 a month |
3 star, 14 nights, £625 | About £53 a month | About £132 a month | About £263 a month |
4 star, 10 nights, £679 | About £58 a month | About £145 a month | About £290 a month |
Christmas, 7 nights, £799 | About £70 a month | About £175 a month | About £350 a month |
Anybody saving toward the trip rather than paying from savings. Forty pounds a month is a manageable household commitment. Two hundred is a different conversation.
The other genuine reason. Haram facing under two hundred metres goes first in any month, even quiet ones, because the supply is small and constant.
If you want that specific band, book six months out regardless of the season.
Twenty-one days needs more allocation to line up than seven, so it wants a longer lead even in an easy month. Six months for a three week winter trip is sensible.
Block rooms are harder to secure than single ones at any time of year. Five or six months for a mosque group in winter, against three for an individual booking.
Every UK family with school-age children is looking at the same eighteen days, and so is much of Europe because the school break is shared.
It is not a religious peak. It is a school holiday peak, and it is the only one in the entire winter.
September for Christmas, August for New Year departures around the 27th to the 30th, which are the tightest part of the window.
Connecting rooms first, then quad rooms, then close-in properties, then direct flights. The price is high from the start and does not climb much.
Whether you need the window at all. The first fortnight of the same month is £499 against £799, in identical weather.
If you have no school constraint, that is £300 per person or £1,200 across a family of four for travelling a week earlier.
Book by September, aim for the 18th to the 22nd rather than New Year, and ask about connecting rooms at the enquiry if you are five or six people.
The full Christmas timeline is in a separate post.
If you need to travel at short notice, winter outside the Christmas fortnight is the season to want. November specifically is the best month in the calendar for it.
Because there is no competing demand. Group bookings still shrink and allocations still release, and there is nobody waiting to absorb them.
So what comes back to the market in November is available rather than instantly taken.
Genuine availability at close-in properties three or four weeks out, at the floor price. That is not true of any other month.
The vaccine. The meningococcal ACWY certificate must be dated at least ten days before you arrive, so without one you are three to four weeks away regardless of what is available.
Which is why we say get it now if you intend to travel at all this year. It turns you from a four week traveller into a ten day one.
Inside eight weeks the balance is already due, so a short notice winter booking needs paying in full rather than on a deposit.
On a £499 package that is manageable. On a £799 Christmas booking in November it is less so.
Where it comes from, when it appears and how to be first to it is covered in a separate post.
English schools break up around 17 December, and everything from that weekend prices at £799 rather than £499.
A ten night trip departing on the 12th returns on the 22nd. The whole booking prices at the Christmas rate even though most of it is in the cheap fortnight.
Build it to finish before the 17th. A ten night departure on the 8th returns on the 18th and gets the floor price, and it is the last booking that does.
Your intended length as well as your departure date. We will build it to land on the right side of the line.
The floor price does not return on the 1st. It returns around the 10th, once schools have gone back and the Christmas wave has cleared.
A departure on the 3rd is around £799. The same trip on the 12th is £499. Nine days and £300 per person.
They search for January, see the floor price advertised, and book the first week without realising it is priced as the tail of Christmas.
Depart after the 10th. If you cannot, book it early, because it is a school holiday window and it clears the same way December does.
November. The whole month is £499 and there is nothing to watch for, which makes it the most forgiving month in the calendar to book without checking.
Five seasons, five different answers. This is the payoff of writing them all.
Window | Book by | What early booking buys | If you are late |
|---|---|---|---|
Ramadan, last ten nights | Nine to twelve months | Access to the mosque | The window is closed |
Summer | January, six to seven months | A trip that functions | The trip does not work |
Easter | December, four months | The hotel | Further out, comfortable |
Christmas | September, three months | The hotel and configuration | Further out, workable |
Winter, otherwise | Three months | Mostly the payment plan | Still fine |
Booking advice is not one thing. It depends entirely on what is competing for the same rooms and on whether distance matters in that window.
Ramadan and summer, and for opposite reasons. Ramadan because roads close and shuttles stop. Summer because 43 degrees makes distance physical.
Christmas and Easter, both driven by school holidays rather than by conditions. In both, being further out costs convenience rather than the trip.
Winter outside Christmas. Three months, and genuine late availability beyond that.
Ramadan has the first ten nights. Christmas has the first fortnight of its own month. Summer has October half term. Easter has the term time weeks before it.
Winter is the only one where the window itself is the alternative.
Window | 3 Star | 4 Star | 5 Star |
|---|---|---|---|
November | From £499 | From £629 | From £690 |
1 to 17 December | From £499 | From £629 | From £690 |
Christmas and New Year | From £799 | From £949 | From £1,049 |
From around 10 January | From £499 | From £629 | From £690 |
Early February | From £529 | From £659 | From £725 |
Seven nights, per person, quad sharing. Includes return flights, both hotels named in writing with the distance in metres and the nearest gate, the Saudi Umrah visa, all three transfers and guided Ziyarat in both cities. Held with a £99 deposit.
Duration | 3 Star | Per night |
|---|---|---|
7 nights | From £499 | £71 |
10 nights | From £545 | £55 |
14 nights | From £625 | £45 |
21 days | From £789 | £39 |
Nights rather than the hotel. At 20 to 32 degrees the walk from a three star is comfortable, so the distance premium has lifted and time is worth more.
Ten nights at three star, £545, costs less than seven at four star, £629, and in this season the ten nights is clearly the better trip.
Fourteen nights at three star in November, early December or mid to late January. £625, at £45 a night, in the best conditions the calendar offers.
We check comparable UK packages every month and sit £20 under the lowest we can find for the same nights and the same hotel tier.
The first. For anybody without school-age children, avoiding the Christmas fortnight is £300 per person and it is the largest single decision in the season.
The vaccine. It is £50 to £80 and it is what makes winter’s genuine late availability actually usable by you.
Three months is enough for ten of the twelve weeks, and November genuinely works at four.
Eighteen days at £799 needing September, in a season where everything else is £499 needing three months.
It locks a price that was not going to move and ties up money for no benefit. Unless you want the instalments, in which case book early for that reason and not for availability.
A December trip crossing the 17th, and a January departure before the 10th. Both price at £799 and both are avoidable.
November specifically. Genuine choice at close-in properties three or four weeks out, provided you already have your ACWY certificate.
Ask us what is available for your winter dates
For most of winter, three months is enough and four weeks often works. That is a different answer to the one we give for Ramadan and summer, and it is the honest one.
Tell us your dates and we will tell you plainly how far ahead you actually need to book, and whether the instalment spread is a reason to do it sooner anyway.

Three months for most of the season. Christmas needs September, which is six months.
Genuinely, and get a good hotel. It is the best month in the calendar for a short notice booking.
No global demand event in the current cycle, only one UK school holiday, and Britain spends January recovering from December.
Two of twelve. The Christmas fortnight from around 18 December to 3 January, and the first week of January which is priced with it.
Only if you want the payment plan. For availability it ties up money for no benefit in a month that was not going to run out.
Full choice of hotel, the floor price, and you are close enough to know your circumstances.
Because we said Ramadan needs a year and summer needs seven months. Saying the same about November would be sales advice rather than information.
Barely. November is £499 twelve months out and £499 three months out.
The instalments. A £499 package a year out is around £40 a month. At three months it is £200.
£625 booked a year out is about £53 a month. At three months it is £263.
Anybody saving toward the trip rather than paying from savings.
Haram facing under two hundred metres, because the supply is small and constant. Book that six months out in any season.
Twenty-one days needs more allocation to line up, so six months even in an easy month.

Less than people expect. It is high from the start.
Whether you need the window. The first fortnight of the same month is £499 against £799.

By August. Departures around the 27th to the 30th are the tightest part of the window.
The 18th to the 22nd, straight after schools break up.
A trip that crosses that date prices at the Christmas rate for the whole booking, even if most of it is in the cheap fortnight.

Inside eight weeks the balance is already due, so it needs paying in full rather than on a deposit.
Ramadan needs nine to twelve months. Winter needs three. That is the widest gap in the calendar.
Summer needs January, so six to seven months, because at 43 degrees the hotel decides whether the trip functions.
Ramadan and summer, for opposite reasons. Roads closing in one, heat in the other.
Christmas and Easter, both driven by school holidays rather than conditions.
Ramadan has the first ten nights. Christmas has the first fortnight of its own month. Summer has October half term. Easter has the term time weeks before it.
