Umrah is not a local product. Your hotels are in Makkah and Madinah. Your flight leaves from one of about eight UK airports. Your visa is processed on a Saudi government platform that works identically whether the person submitting it is on your street or three hundred miles away.

There is no local pricing, no local hotel allocation and no local visa queue. An agency two miles from your house has exactly the same access to Makkah as one at the other end of the country.

So what did you actually mean?

In our experience, one of three things, and they have different answers.

You want an agency you can physically walk into. Entirely reasonable, and we have an office you can walk into in Manchester.

You want to fly from your nearest airport. Much more common, and the answer is a departure airport rather than a local agency. There is a table further down that sorts this out by region.

You want somebody who speaks your language and understands what you are asking for. Also reasonable, and it has nothing to do with distance.

We are not going to pretend it never does. Five situations where being able to walk in is worth something real.

You want to hand over passports in person

Some people will not photograph four passports and send them over WhatsApp, and that is a perfectly sensible instinct. If that is you, an office you can visit removes the problem.

You are arranging for parents who will not use WhatsApp

Very common. The booking is being made by a son or daughter, the travellers are in their seventies, and somebody needs to sit with them and go through it. Being able to do that in a room rather than on speakerphone genuinely helps.

A large group where somebody needs to coordinate

Above about twenty people, a face to face session with the organiser saves a week of messages. Documents, rooming and who is paying for whom are easier to sort across a desk.

You want to pay in person

Still matters to a lot of people and there is nothing wrong with it.

There is a genuinely good Umrah specialist near you

If there is, use them. A good local Umrah agency who knows Makkah beats a remote one every time, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. The next section is about the far more common situation where the local option is not that.

When it makes no difference at all

Price

There is no local pricing in Umrah. Hotel allocation is contracted centrally, airline seats are priced by the airline, and the visa fee is set by the Saudi Ministry. An agency near you is not getting a better rate because they are near you.

Hotel access

The properties close to the Haram are contracted by operators across the world. Being in Small Heath or Cheetham Hill or Govanhill has no bearing on which rooms are available in Makkah.

The visa

Submitted through Nusuk, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah platform, and processed identically regardless of who submitted it or where they are sitting. Four to seven working days for everybody. More on the visa page.

Support while you are away

This one is worth thinking about carefully, because it is the one people get backwards.

When something goes wrong it will be at 3am Saudi time. A shop on your high street will be closed and will stay closed until nine the following morning, by which point your day is ruined. What you actually need is somebody on WhatsApp who already knows your booking and answers at Saudi hours.

Proximity to your house is worth nothing at that moment. Proximity to a phone is worth everything.

The high street travel agent problem

Worth saying plainly, because it is the most common near me outcome and it is often the worst one.

The difference between a travel agent and an Umrah agent

A general travel agency on your local parade books package holidays. They are frequently very good at that. Umrah comes up occasionally and they arrange it the way they arrange everything else, by putting flights and a hotel together.

What they will not know is which Makkah hotel is 180 metres from Gate 1 and which one describes itself as near Haram and means a fifteen minute walk uphill. They will not know whether that hotel’s shuttle runs for Fajr. They will not know that your visa now depends on Nusuk-verified accommodation, or that the Rawdah permit is free and cannot be sold to you.

Why that costs you

Because on an Umrah trip, distance to the Haram is the single variable that decides how the trip feels, and it is invisible on a booking screen. Somebody who books Umrah twice a year cannot know it. Somebody who books it every day cannot avoid knowing it.

How to tell which you are dealing with

Ask three questions of any agency, local or not.

Which hotel, and how far from the Haram in metres? Does that hotel run a shuttle, and does it cover Fajr? And what happens about the Nusuk permits, which are separate from the visa?

An Umrah specialist answers all three without hesitating. A general travel agent will answer the first vaguely and the other two not at all.

What we are not saying

That local agencies are bad. Plenty of excellent Umrah specialists operate out of small offices in Bradford, Blackburn, Birmingham and Glasgow, and if there is one near you, use them.

What we are saying is that near me is the wrong filter. Specialist or not specialist is the right one.

English or Urdu, no difference

Both, at the same price and the same service. On a lot of bookings the person arranging it is a son or daughter and the person travelling is a parent, and the conversation ends up happening in both languages at once. That is normal here.

Local knowledge where it counts

Not about your town, about your airport. Which terminal, whether that airport still runs the 100ml liquid rule, how its drop-off charge works, and how early you genuinely need to arrive on an Umrah flight rather than a holiday one.

And the door is open

How to check any agency, near you or not

1. Which hotel, and how many metres from the Haram? Not minutes. Minutes are elastic and metres are not.
2. Does that hotel run a shuttle, and does it cover Fajr? The second half of that question separates specialists from everybody else.
3. Is the visa cost inside your quoted price, and will you submit it on my behalf? Two parts, one question.
4. Are all three transfers included, including Makkah to Madinah? That leg is four and a half hours and it is the most commonly omitted item.
5. Is the flight one ticket with bags checked through? A vague answer means two separate tickets and no protection.
6. What happens about the Nusuk permits? They are separate from the visa, they are free, and nobody can sell you one.
7. What financial protection applies, and can I have that in writing? Ask for any scheme membership number.
8. Will I get an itemised confirmation before I pay the balance? If the answer is anything other than yes, stop.

An agency that answers all eight clearly is worth using whether they are on your street or in another city. One that cannot is not worth using even if you can walk there.

Glasgow for the west, Edinburgh for the east. Both connect rather than fly direct.

What should I ask before booking with anyone?

Which hotel and how many metres, whether the shuttle covers Fajr, whether the visa is in the price and who submits it, whether all three transfers are included, whether the flight is one ticket, what happens about permits, what financial protection applies, and whether you get an itemised confirmation before paying.

Why metres rather than minutes?

Minutes are elastic. A five minute walk at 2am in October is fifteen at Maghrib in Ramadan.

What if they will not name the hotel?

They should at least give you a shortlist and a guaranteed maximum distance. Near Haram is not a hotel.

What is a self-transfer and why does it matter?

Two separate tickets rather than one. Bags do not check through and a delay on the first leg is entirely your problem.

Can anyone guarantee me a Rawdah slot?

No. They are free through the Nusuk app and anybody selling one does not have it.

What should be on my confirmation?
