Saudi Arabia has relaxed its requirements considerably in recent years, and women can now generally perform Umrah without a male guardian. In practice this most often applies to women travelling as part of an organised group, and in some circumstances a No Objection Certificate has been required depending on nationality and situation.

We will be straight about the limits of what we can tell you here: these rules have changed more than once in recent seasons, and what was accurate last year may not be accurate for your travel dates. Any page that states the position as settled fact is either out of date or guessing. What we do instead is confirm the current requirements for your specific circumstances at the point of booking, before you pay anything, rather than relying on what applied last season.

What Is Practically Different for Women

Ihram

Women do not wear the two unstitched white cloths that men do. Ihram for women is ordinary modest clothing — any colour, stitched garments are fine — with the hands and face left uncovered while in the state of Ihram. There is no special garment to buy, though many women prefer a simple loose abaya they can wear comfortably for long periods.

Practical points that matter more than people expect: choose something breathable, because you will be in it for hours in warm conditions; wear it in before you travel; and take a spare, because you will be in Ihram longer than a single day.

Footwear

The most underestimated item. Sa’i alone is around 3.5 kilometres on marble, on top of Tawaf. Comfortable sandals you can slip on and off easily, already broken in, will do more for your trip than almost anything else you pack.

Rawdah Permits

Entry to the Rawdah in Masjid an-Nabawi requires a free permit booked through the Nusuk app, and men and women have entirely separate time windows. Women’s slots are typically fewer and shorter, and they go quickly. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed rather than waiting until you arrive.

One practical consequence: a husband and wife travelling together will not visit the Rawdah at the same time. Plan for that rather than being surprised by it.

Prayer Areas and Access

Both Harams have designated women’s prayer areas as well as mixed areas. In Masjid al-Haram, women pray in the general areas including around the Mataf. In Masjid an-Nabawi the arrangements are more separated. Signage is multilingual and staff are used to directing visitors — do not be anxious about getting it wrong.

Planning Around Your Cycle — The Question Nobody Addresses

This is the single most common question women ask us on the phone and the one they most often apologise for asking. There is no need to apologise, and there is no reason it should not be written down plainly.

What Happens in Practice

Tawaf requires ritual purity according to the majority of scholars, which means a woman who is menstruating cannot perform Tawaf until she is pure. Because Sa’i follows Tawaf, that part of the rites waits too.

What she can do: enter Ihram at the Miqat as normal, make the intention, recite the Talbiyah, and remain in the state of Ihram. She simply waits to complete the rites. She is not excluded from the journey; the timing shifts.

The specific rulings here — including what applies in Madinah, and the differing positions of the schools of thought — are matters of fiqh, and there is genuine scholarly difference on some points. What It Means for Which Package to Book

This is the practical bit. If your cycle might fall during a short trip, a 7-night package carries real risk — four nights in Makkah leaves very little room to wait. A 10, 12 or 14-night package gives you a genuine buffer, and if the timing turns out to be fine you have simply had a longer Umrah.

Speaking to Your GP

Some women choose to discuss delaying their period medically with their doctor before Hajj or Umrah. This is a common conversation in general practice and your GP will not find the request unusual. It is a medical decision, not a travel one, and it needs a proper consultation — not something to arrange in the last fortnight. If you are considering it, raise it several months before you travel so there is time to try it and see how you respond.

Equally, plenty of women decide not to, book a longer package instead, and let the trip unfold as it does. Both are entirely reasonable. What is not reasonable is nobody telling you the options exist.

Safety and Practicalities

• Agree a meeting point before entering the Haram — a specific numbered gate, not “by the entrance”. This applies to everyone but matters most if you might be separated from your group.
• Carry your hotel card with the name and address in Arabic. Taxi drivers will get you back with it and may struggle without it.
• The Mataf is crowded and physical during peak hours. The upper levels are calmer and Tawaf there is longer but far less pressured. Many women prefer them and there is nothing lesser about it.
• Travel with a phone that works. A local SIM is cheap on arrival and having data makes everything easier, from Nusuk to finding your hotel.
• Tell us if you are travelling alone and we will make sure you have a named contact rather than a general number.

What to Check With Any Operator

If paying without interest matters to you, these are the questions to ask — of us or anyone else. A straight answer should be immediate.

1. Is this a credit agreement? If yes, it is regulated lending and there will be terms you need to read carefully.
2. Is a third-party provider involved? Some agencies use external instalment services. Those are separate agreements with their own terms, and some do charge interest or late fees.

All Islamic dates are expected dates based on astronomical calculation and confirmed by moon sighting closer to the time. Wakefield and Kirklees mosques will announce locally.

The Year at a Glance

Ramadan 2027

Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, ending around 9 March, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 to 10 March. The 2027 Closure

Umrah is not possible from roughly early April to early June 2027. Saudi Arabia suspends Umrah visas ahead of Hajj and requires Umrah pilgrims to leave the Kingdom before the season begins. Hajj 2027 falls on 14 to 18 May, with the Day of Arafah on Saturday 15 May and Eid al-Adha on Sunday 16 May.

These dates follow the pattern of recent seasons and have not been confirmed for 2027 by the Saudi authorities. Do not plan around Easter 2027 — it falls in late March at the edge of the closing window. May half term falls inside the closure entirely.

Autumn Is the Best Window of the Year

Late September to November brings moderate crowds, temperatures that have eased and prices at their comfortable low.
