Six nights in Makkah is a threshold

On a 10 night trip you get six nights in Makkah. That is the point at which you can perform Tawaf at four genuinely different times of day, and those four are not variations on the same experience. They are four different places.

On four nights you cannot do it. The first two go to the flight, the time difference and working out where you are. By the time you have your bearings you are packing for Madinah.

Ten nights costs £46 more than seven. That is the cheapest three nights you will ever buy.

The four Tawaf times

This is the argument for six nights in Makkah, and it is worth setting out properly because it is the whole reason we push this length.

Fajr

The Mataf is at its emptiest in the hour before and after Fajr. The marble is cold enough that you feel it through your feet, the air has not heated yet, and you can complete seven circuits without being carried by the crowd.

For a lot of people this is the Tawaf they remember. It is also the one most first-timers miss, because on a short trip you are still adjusting to being three hours ahead and you sleep through it.

Mid morning

Quieter than people expect. The Fajr crowd has gone, the mid-day heat has not arrived, and the courtyard has space. Good for anyone travelling with elderly parents, because you can move at your own pace without being pushed.

After Maghrib

The fullest the Haram gets outside Ramadan, and the one that feels least like a personal act and most like being part of something enormous. The noise is different. The pace is not yours to set.

Worth doing at least once even if you find crowds difficult, because it is genuinely a different experience rather than just a busier version of the same one.

Past midnight

The crowd thins out again somewhere after Isha has cleared and before the Fajr build-up begins. The lighting changes, the Mataf opens up, and there is a stillness that does not exist at any other hour.

This is the one people are surprised by, because nobody mentions it. It is also the easiest to fit in, since you are not competing with anything else in your day.

Why the count matters

Four nights in Makkah gives you two usable days once you subtract arrival and departure. Six gives you four or five. That is the difference between doing Umrah and spending time in Makkah.

What a 10 night Umrah actually looks like

Nobody publishes this, so here it is. The shape below assumes you fly into Jeddah and go to Makkah first. If you fly into Madinah first the order reverses and the arrival is calmer, which we cover further down.

Day three is the one to protect

Plan nothing on day three. You will have flown, performed Umrah in a state of exhaustion and adrenaline, and slept badly at least once. Day three is when that catches up with you.

Families who book Ziyarat for day three regret it. Families who spend it at the Haram and in bed do not.

Day four is when something shifts

Almost everybody describes the same thing. Somewhere around the fourth day you stop navigating Makkah and start knowing it. Which gate is quiet. Which stairwell to the upper Mataf is fastest. Where to buy dates that are not priced for tourists.

On a 7 night trip that shift happens on your last day in Makkah. On 10 nights you get to live in it for three more.

The Madinah days are slower on purpose

Madinah runs at a different pace. The area around Masjid an-Nabawi is flat, the walks are short, and most people end up in the mosque for hours at a stretch between Maghrib and Isha without meaning to.

Four nights is enough to do the Rawdah, the main Ziyarat sites and still have a day where nothing is scheduled. Three is enough to do them in a rush.

The annual leave arithmetic

Ten nights is eleven days door to door. Here is what that actually costs you at work, which is the calculation most people are really doing.

The honest comparison

Ten nights costs two more days of leave than seven, and £46 more in money. In return you get three more nights, and specifically three more nights in Makkah rather than Madinah.

For most people with a normal leave allowance, that is a straightforward yes. Two days is not the difference between having a holiday later in the year and not having one.

How to position it

Fly out on a Friday and come back on a Tuesday eleven days later, and you capture two full weekends. Fly out midweek and you capture one.

Midweek departures often price lower, so there is a genuine trade between saving leave and saving money. Tell us which matters more and we will build the itinerary around it.

If you work shifts

Ten nights fits a lot of shift patterns better than seven, because eleven days covers a full rotation for many people rather than cutting one in half. NHS staff, drivers and warehouse workers tell us this regularly.

Ten nights against the alternatives

Against 7 nights

Seven nights is four in Makkah and three in Madinah, from £499. It works, it covers every ritual, and it is the most booked package we sell because of the leave.

What it does not give you is the settling-in period. You arrive, perform Umrah, and start counting down. Our 7 night page sets out who it genuinely suits.

Against 12 nights

Twelve nights is seven in Makkah and five in Madinah, from £579. Only £34 more than ten.

If you can take the extra two days of leave, take them. Twelve is better than ten for the same reason ten is better than seven, and the money barely moves.

Against 14 nights

Fourteen nights is eight and six, from £625. It is the best value per night we sell at £45 against £55 on the 10 night.

The constraint is almost never money. It is whether you can be away from work and family for a fortnight.

The per-night picture

The curve flattens after ten. Going from seven to ten saves you £16 a night. Going from twelve to fourteen saves you £3. So if you are optimising for value rather than time, ten nights is where most of the gain has already happened.

Who 10 nights suits

First-time pilgrims

The strongest case. You do not know what you do not know, and a 7 night trip gives you no room to absorb it. Ten gives you a rest day, a settling day, and enough repetition that the rituals stop feeling like an exam.

Families with school-age children

Long enough to justify the flight and the cost, short enough that patience holds. Fourteen nights with a six year old is a different proposition.

Anyone flying from a regional airport

If you are connecting through a Gulf hub from Glasgow, Stansted or Leeds Bradford, you have already spent most of two days travelling. Spreading that overhead across ten nights rather than seven is simply better arithmetic.

People who work shifts

Eleven days often maps onto a rotation more cleanly than eight.

Who it does not suit

Two groups, and we would tell you rather than take the booking.

If you are travelling with a parent in their late seventies or eighties, book twelve or fourteen instead. A longer trip means a missed Fajr is nothing, because you go tomorrow. On ten nights every missed prayer feels like a loss.

And if you have only five days of leave available and cannot get more, book seven nights properly rather than stretching to ten and worrying about work the whole time.

The night split, and whether to change it

Our default on a 10 night package is six nights Makkah and four Madinah. It is a default rather than a rule.

Seven and three

More time at the Haram, less in Madinah. Reasonable if you have performed Umrah before and Makkah is your priority. Three nights in Madinah is enough for the Rawdah and the main Ziyarat if you are organised.

Five and five

An even split, which some people prefer for a first trip because Madinah is where the pace drops and the trip settles. Less common but we build it regularly.

What we would not do

Fewer than three nights in Madinah on a 10 night trip. At that point you are spending half a day on the coach for a stay that ends before it starts.

Which city first

Madinah first is the calmer sequence, especially for a first Umrah, because you sleep and recover before entering Ihram on the ground at Dhul Hulayfah rather than on the aircraft. Jeddah first gets you to the Haram immediately.

The permits

The visa gets you into Saudi Arabia. A separate Nusuk permit gets you into the Haram to perform Umrah, and another covers the Rawdah in Madinah. Both are free and both are booked in the app the day your visa is approved.

On a 10 night trip you have more chances at a Rawdah slot than on a shorter one, which is a genuine and underrated advantage. More detail on the visa page.

10 night prices

Per person, quad sharing, off-peak departures. Includes return flights, both hotels, the Saudi visa and all three transfers. Ramadan, Christmas and school holidays price higher.

Where the extra money goes

Almost entirely into distance. A 3 star property in Makkah is usually clean and functional and perfectly fine to sleep in. What you buy at 4 and 5 star is metres, and metres decide how many times a day you go back to the room.

On a 10 night trip that compounds. Sixty walks to the Haram at 1.2 km is a different holiday to sixty walks at 400 metres. The luxury page breaks the proximity bands down properly if you want to see what the top end buys.

Rooms

Quad sharing is the headline rate. Twin or double adds roughly £180 to £340 per person depending on tier and season. Connecting rooms for larger families are priced properly rather than squeezed.

How the price is set

We check comparable UK packages every month and sit £20 under the lowest we can find for the same nights and the same hotel tier. Make sure whatever you compare us against includes the visa and all three transfers, or it is not the same product.

Best months for a 10 night trip

Length interacts with month more than people expect, because a longer stay means more exposure to whatever the weather is doing.

For a 10 night trip specifically, October and November are the standouts. You are walking to the Haram sixty times or so, and doing that at 30 degrees rather than 43 changes the trip more than any hotel upgrade.

How many days off work do I need?

Typically seven working days, against five for a 7 night trip.

Can I do it on fewer?

If you position it to capture two weekends, yes. Fly out Friday and return Tuesday eleven days later.

Is it worth two extra days of leave?

For most people with a normal allowance, comfortably. Two days is rarely the difference between having another holiday that year and not.

Are midweek departures cheaper?

Usually. There is a genuine trade between saving leave and saving money, so tell us which matters more.

Does 10 nights work for shift workers?

Often better than 7, because eleven days covers a full rotation for many patterns rather than cutting one in half.

Can I fit it into a school holiday?

Easily into a two week break. October half term in England is one week, so you would need a couple of days either side. Scottish October breaks are usually a fortnight, which covers it comfortably.

How far ahead should I book?

Three to four months normally. Six or more for Ramadan and December.

When is the cheapest time to go for 10 nights?

January and November. October is the best on weather and crowds combined.

What happens on the first day?

You fly, enter Ihram before the Miqat, land at Jeddah and transfer to Makkah, around ninety minutes by road.

When do I actually perform Umrah?

Usually day two, after you have slept. Some people go straight from the hotel on arrival, which works if you have the energy.

Why do you say to keep day three free?

Because that is when the flight, the adrenaline and the time difference catch up with you. Families who book Ziyarat for day three regret it.

What is the time difference?

Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two hours ahead during British Summer Time.

When does the trip start to feel normal?

Around day four, almost universally. You stop navigating Makkah and start knowing it.

When do I move to Madinah?

Day seven on the standard split. You check out, take the coach for about four and a half hours, and check in.

Is the coach journey difficult?

Air conditioned and straightforward. Take water and snacks, and something for children. Private vehicles are available on the higher tiers.

What do I do with four nights in Madinah?

The Rawdah, the main Ziyarat sites, and at least one day with nothing scheduled. Most people say that unscheduled day is their favourite of the trip.

Can I perform Umrah twice?

Yes, and a 10 night trip gives you the room to. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

How many times will I walk to the Haram?

Roughly sixty over six days if you attend most prayers. That is why the distance to your hotel matters more on a longer trip.

Can I change the six and four split?

Yes. Seven and three if Makkah is your priority, or five and five if you want a more even trip.

What would you not recommend?

Does the split affect the price?

How far will my hotel be?

700 metres to 1.2 km at 3 star, 300 to 700 at 4 star, 200 to 500 at 5 star, and under 200 on the luxury tiers.

Does distance matter more on a longer trip?

Yes, considerably. Sixty walks at 1.2 km is a different trip to sixty walks at 400 metres.

Will you name the hotel before I pay?

Both of them, in writing, with the distance in metres and the nearest gate.

Is a 3 star hotel in Makkah acceptable?

Yes. Star ratings there are locally assigned and 3 star properties are usually clean and functional. What the higher tiers buy is mostly distance.

Should I upgrade the hotel or extend the trip?

On a fixed budget, extend the trip if you are at seven nights. Once you are at ten, upgrade the Makkah hotel.

What is quad sharing?

Four people to a room, usually two doubles. It is the headline rate on every package.

For most people yes, for £46 and two days of leave. The three extra nights are all in Makkah.

Is 12 better than 10?

Which airport should I fly from?

Is a connection a problem on a 10 night trip?

Less than on a 7 night one, because the travel overhead spreads across more nights.

What should I pack for ten nights?

Less than you think, since laundry is easy and cheap in both cities. Ihram in hand luggage, medication with the label, and unscented soap for Ihram in 100ml containers if your airport still runs that rule.

Will I need more than one Ihram?

Two sets is sensible on a longer trip, particularly in warmer months.

Can I do laundry?

Yes, easily, in both cities. It is one reason a longer trip does not need much more luggage.

Can women travel without a Mahram?

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm for your travel date.

Can I bring Zamzam home?

Yes, in checked baggage, and only the official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters.
