That list is longer than the phrase people search for, and the gap between the two is where most of the trouble lives.

Flights and hotel is an incomplete product

If a package genuinely contains only flights and a hotel, you still have four things left to buy. The visa. The transfer from Jeddah airport to your hotel. The four and a half hour road transfer between Makkah and Madinah. And the transfer back to the airport at the end.

You also, quite possibly, have a second hotel to book, because Umrah is two cities rather than one and a surprising number of people do not realise that until they start pricing it.

So the useful question is not whether flights and hotel are included. It is what else is, and what you will be paying for separately at Saudi retail prices while jet-lagged.

Which of these get left out most often

Number six, by a wide margin. The Makkah to Madinah leg is the most expensive transfer of the trip and the easiest to omit from a headline price. Then number four, the visa. Then breakfast, which is not on this list because it varies by property and we confirm it per hotel rather than making a blanket claim.

What is genuinely not in our price

Travel insurance. Your meningococcal ACWY vaccine, which is a visa requirement and which many GP practices charge for. Meals beyond breakfast where breakfast applies. UK airport parking or train fares. Anything you buy while you are there.

We list the exclusions rather than burying them, because a package with four hidden extras is not the price it says it is.

It is two hotels, not one

This trips people up more than anything else on this page, particularly first-time pilgrims who are used to booking a holiday where you land, check in once and stay put.

How the trip is actually shaped

You spend part of your stay in Makkah for the Umrah itself, and part in Madinah at Masjid an-Nabawi. They are around 450 km apart and the coach between them takes about four and a half hours.

So you check into one hotel, live there for several nights, check out, travel half a day, and check into another. Two properties, two sets of distances to the mosque, two lots of check-in.

The night splits we use

These are defaults rather than rules. If you want five and two on a 7 night trip because the Haram is your priority, say so and we will build it that way.

Where to spend the money

Makkah, if the budget is finite. The proximity premium in Madinah is much smaller, the area around Masjid an-Nabawi is flat and the walks are shorter, and you tend to spend more of your Madinah time inside the mosque anyway.

A common and sensible booking is a closer hotel in Makkah and a comfortable central one in Madinah, rather than spending evenly across both.

Which city first, and the flight routing that follows

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it changes the shape of your whole trip.

Jeddah first

You land at Jeddah, transfer to Makkah, perform Umrah, then travel on to Madinah. Jeddah airport is around 90 km from Makkah, an hour to ninety minutes by road.

The thing to plan for is Ihram. On this routing you enter Ihram before you land, either at your UK airport after security or on the aircraft. The Miqat is crossed roughly half an hour before landing and the crew announce it. You cannot sort it out at Jeddah arrivals.

Madinah first

You land at Madinah, spend your Madinah nights first, then travel to Makkah.

This is the calmer sequence and we recommend it more often than most agencies do, especially for a first Umrah or with elderly parents. You arrive, sleep, recover from the flight, and deal with Ihram on the ground at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, about 9 km outside Madinah on the road to Makkah. Your coach stops there and there are proper facilities.

Nobody is trying to change into two white sheets in an aircraft toilet at 4am.

The open-jaw option

You can fly into one city and out of the other. In at Jeddah, out from Madinah, or the reverse.

It is worth asking about because it removes a backtrack. On a Jeddah-in, Jeddah-out itinerary you travel Makkah to Madinah and then back down to Jeddah for the flight home, which is another long road leg at the end of a tiring trip. An open jaw takes you straight from your Madinah hotel to Madinah airport.

It does not always price better, and sometimes the fare difference outweighs the convenience. We check both and tell you the difference in money and in hours rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us.

How to decide

Package or book it yourself? The honest comparison

You can buy flights and hotels separately. Plenty of people do. Here is where each approach genuinely wins, and we are not going to pretend the answer is always us.

Where a package wins

Hotel rates near the Haram

This is the big one. Agencies hold contracted room allocation at rates you will not find on a public booking site, particularly close in. The gap is widest exactly where you want to be, which is under 500 metres.

One ticket

Booked separately, you often end up with two tickets that know nothing about each other. Bags do not check through, and a delay on the first leg is entirely your problem. Every package flight we book is a single ticket with protected connections.

The visa chain

Umrah visa applications now depend on bookings verified through the Nusuk system. When an operator arranges the hotels and submits the visa as one chain, that side is handled. Booking a hotel independently and then applying is where people hit friction. There is more on this on the visa included page.

The transfers

Buying the Makkah to Madinah leg on its own is not cheap and it is the thing most likely to go wrong at the awkward moment.

One party responsible

If a flight moves, somebody has to shift the hotel nights and the transfers to match. On a package that is our job. Booked separately it is yours, from a hotel lobby, at Saudi hours.

The money

A package holds on a £99 deposit with the balance due eight weeks out. Booking separately usually means paying for flights in full now and hotels at various points.

Where booking yourself genuinely wins

Four situations, and they are real.

You have airline miles or points to burn

A package cannot use them. If you have enough points for a long-haul return, book the flight yourself and ask us for a land only quote covering hotels, transfers and visa support.

You want one specific property and nobody has allocation

Occasionally somebody wants a particular hotel, a particular room category, or a Kaaba view that is not in anyone’s block. Sometimes the only route is booking it direct.

You are already in the region

If you are in Dubai for work and adding Umrah on the end, a UK package makes no sense. Land only is the answer.

You are building a longer multi-country trip

If you tell us your situation and a package is genuinely not the right shape, we will say so and quote you land only instead. Losing a flight booking is better than selling somebody a product that does not fit.

The flight side, in detail

One ticket, always

Every flight we book is a single ticket with protected connections and bags checked through to Jeddah or Madinah. If a leg runs late, the airline reroutes you rather than shrugging.

We never book self-transfers, which are two separate tickets dressed up as an itinerary. They look cheaper until the first flight is ninety minutes late and you are buying a new ticket at a desk on the day.

Direct or connecting

Direct services to Jeddah run from Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham. From most other UK airports you connect, usually through a Gulf hub or Istanbul.

A connection is not a disaster. It adds hours and a second boarding, and for most people that is a fair trade. With an eighty year old parent it usually is not, and we will tell you to take the direct flight even where it costs more.

Which airport

We book from every UK airport and price them identically as a package, so any difference you see is the underlying fare rather than a markup. If you can reach two airports, tell us both.

Baggage

Allowances vary by carrier, typically 30 to 40 kg in economy on the Saudi and Gulf airlines. Confirmed in your travel pack. Worth knowing before you pack, because Umrah families routinely travel heavier than the average passenger.

Zamzam on the way home

The official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters is carried free and outside your normal allowance on the main Umrah carriers. Shop-bought Zamzam is refused at check-in. It goes in the hold, never in hand luggage.

What we tell you before you pay

The property name. The distance to the Haram in metres, not minutes. The nearest gate by name. The room configuration. Whether breakfast is included at that specific property.

If allocation is not confirmed yet for your dates, you get a shortlist and a guaranteed maximum distance instead of a vague promise.

What the tiers mean in metres

Star ratings in Makkah are locally assigned and a 3 star property is usually perfectly clean and functional. What you are mostly buying at the higher tiers is distance. The luxury page breaks the proximity bands down properly.

Rooms

Quad sharing is the headline rate and means four people to a room. Twin or double adds roughly £180 to £340 per person depending on tier and season. Connecting rooms are available for larger families and we price them properly rather than squeezing six people into a quad.

Madinah

Central Madinah hotels sit 100 to 250 metres from Masjid an-Nabawi. Bab 21 and Bab 25 are the gates most guests use. The premium for being close is much smaller than in Makkah, which is why we suggest spending the money on the Makkah side.

Prices

Per person, quad sharing, off-peak departures. Includes return flights, two hotels, the Saudi Umrah visa and all three ground transfers. Ramadan, Christmas and school holidays price higher.

Per night, which is the fairer comparison

At 3 star, 7 nights works out at £71 a night and 14 nights at £45. Same flights, same hotels, same visa. The flight cost is fixed however long you stay, so it spreads further the longer you go.

How the price is set

We check comparable UK packages every month and sit £20 under the lowest we can find for the same nights and the same hotel tier. Make sure whatever you are comparing us against includes the same eight items from the checklist above, or it is not a comparison.

Six nights in Makkah is where the trip changes, because you can perform Tawaf at four genuinely different times of day. Fajr with the Mataf half empty and the marble cold underfoot. Mid morning. After Maghrib when it is fullest. Then past midnight when it thins out again.

Do I stay in one hotel or two?

Two. One in Makkah and one in Madinah.

How far apart are they?

Around 450 km, about four and a half hours by air conditioned coach.

How do the nights split?

Four and three on a 7 night trip, six and four on 10 nights, seven and five on 12, eight and six on 14.

Can I change the split?

Yes. If you want five and two on a 7 night trip to get more time at the Haram, say so and we build it that way.

How many nights should I spend in Madinah?

Three at minimum. Less than that and you are rushing the Rawdah and the Ziyarat sites.

Should I spend more on the Makkah or Madinah hotel?

Makkah. The proximity premium in Madinah is much smaller and you spend more of your time there inside the mosque anyway.

Do I check out and check in again?

Yes, once, in the middle of the trip. Pack with that in mind rather than spreading everything across the room.

Is the coach transfer comfortable?

Air conditioned and straightforward. Take water, snacks and something for children. On the higher tiers a private vehicle is available.

Which city first

Should I fly into Jeddah or Madinah?

Madinah first is the calmer sequence and we recommend it for first-timers and anyone travelling with elderly parents. Jeddah first gets you to the Haram immediately.

Why is Madinah first easier?

Because you enter Ihram on the ground at Dhul Hulayfah rather than on the plane, after you have slept and recovered from the flight.

Where is Dhul Hulayfah?

About 9 km outside Madinah on the road to Makkah, also called Abyar Ali. Your coach stops there and there are proper changing facilities.

If I fly into Jeddah, where do I put on Ihram?

At your UK airport after security, or on the aircraft before the Miqat.

When is the Miqat crossed?

Flying into Jeddah, roughly half an hour before landing. The crew announce it. You must be in Ihram with your intention made before that point.

What is an open-jaw itinerary?

Does the visa work differently if I book independently?

When does booking myself genuinely win?

What is a land only package?

What if something changes after I book?

Are the flights direct?

Practical

How long should I go for?

Ten nights if you can. Seven works, fourteen is the best value, and twelve suits families and older travellers.

What is the best month?

October and November on weather, crowds and price. January is the cheapest.

How far ahead should I book?

Three to four months normally. Six or more for Ramadan and December.

What documents do you need?

Passport with six months validity from your arrival date, a passport photo, and your ACWY certificate.

Do I need a vaccine?

Yes, meningococcal ACWY is a visa requirement. At least ten days before you arrive.

Do I need permits as well as a visa?

Yes. The visa gets you into the country and a Nusuk permit gets you into the Haram. Book both permits the day your visa is approved.

Do you arrange Ziyarat?

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

What is the time difference?

Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two ahead during British Summer Time.

Can I perform Umrah more than once on the trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Can women travel without a Mahram?

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm the position for your travel date.

Do I need travel insurance?

Strongly recommended and not in the package price. Cancellation, medical and repatriation cover are the ones that matter.
