Requirement 1 — Your Passport
The most common single cause of rejection, and the easiest to avoid.
Passport Validity Rules
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of travel. Some agents and airlines apply a stricter seven-month buffer, so if you are close to the line, treat seven months as the safe threshold rather than six.
This is calculated from your travel date, not your application date. A passport expiring in November is not valid for an October departure under a six-month rule — it needs to run to at least April of the following year.
Blank Pages
Two blank pages are the standard expectation. Even though the eVisa is electronic, entry and exit stamps still need somewhere to go, and border staff can and do query passports that are full.
Machine-Readable Requirement
Your passport must be machine readable — the two lines of characters at the bottom of the photo page. Every current UK passport qualifies. Older non-UK passports occasionally do not, which is worth checking if you hold a passport issued many years ago.
The renewal timing trap
If you renew your passport after applying for your visa, the visa is linked to the old passport number and will not transfer. Renew first, then apply. Pilgrims who do it the other way round end up reapplying and paying twice.
Requirement 2 — Your Photograph
Photo rejections are frustrating because the app rarely tells you what is wrong. It simply fails validation.
What the Photo Must Show
- A plain white background with no shadows, patterns or objects
- Your full face, front-facing, eyes open and clearly visible
- A neutral expression with your mouth closed
- Recent — taken within the last six months
- JPEG format, generally under 3MB
- No glare on glasses, and no headwear that obscures facial features
Hijab and Head Covering
A hijab is acceptable provided the full face from chin to forehead is visible and unshadowed. This is the same standard as a UK passport photo, so a photo that passed for your passport will normally pass here.
Photos for Babies and Young Children
Infants need their own photo, which is genuinely awkward. Lay the child on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above in good natural light. Eyes open is preferred but not always achievable for newborns.
The cheapest way to get this right
Most UK pharmacies and photo booths do biometric photos for around £6 to £10 and will supply a digital copy. Paying for a digital file once avoids three rounds of rejected phone photos.
Requirement 3 — MenACWY Vaccination Certificate
Mandatory for every pilgrim aged one year and over, with no exemptions by nationality or by how many times you have travelled before.

The Timing Condition
The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia. Certificates are valid for three years for conjugate vaccines and up to five for quadrivalent polysaccharide versions.

Why an NHS Record Is Not Always Enough
A vaccination line on your NHS app is not a certificate. Saudi Arabia wants a signed and stamped document. Many GP surgeries provide the vaccine but decline to issue travel certificates, which leaves pilgrims correctly vaccinated with no acceptable proof.
Requirement 4 — Nusuk-Verified Hotel and Transport Bookings
This is the requirement that changed everything in 2026, and it is still the one UK pilgrims most often get wrong.
Why Ordinary Hotel Bookings Fail
Your accommodation must be booked through Nusuk or a licensed provider that feeds confirmations into the Nusuk system. A booking made on a general travel site produces a reference number that the visa application will not recognise.
The technical reason is that Nusuk generates a booking reference that links your accommodation to your visa record. Without that link, the application has nothing to validate against.
The Three Transport Confirmations
- Airport arrival transfer, from Jeddah or Madinah to your hotel
- Intercity transport for the Makkah to Madinah leg
- Departure transfer, from your final hotel back to the airport
All three must come from a Nusuk-compliant provider. Booking a taxi on arrival does not satisfy this, and neither does an intercity train ticket bought independently without the correct registration.
What This Means If You Book a Package
Package pilgrims never touch this requirement, because the hotel and transport confirmations are generated as part of the booking. It is the single biggest practical argument for a package over independent travel in 2027 — not cost, but compliance.

Requirement 5 — Flight Confirmation
You need confirmed return or onward travel, with dates that sit inside your visa validity window.
The 30-Day Validity Problem
Your visa is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued, not from the date you enter. Book flights that fall outside that window and the visa expires before you use it.
Once you have entered Saudi Arabia, you may stay up to 90 days on a tourist eVisa. The 30-day limit applies to entry, not to your total stay.
Do You Need to Book Flights Before Applying?
You need confirmed flight details for the application. Some pilgrims use a held reservation rather than a fully paid ticket, though this carries risk if the hold expires before approval. Booking a package removes the question entirely, since flights are confirmed alongside everything else.

The Saudi eVisa system determines eligibility by passport nationality. Holding a BRP or settled status in the UK does not by itself make you eligible for the self-serve eVisa portal.
An Indian passport holder living in Manchester has the same eVisa eligibility as an Indian passport holder living anywhere else. The same logic applies to every nationality.

Situation 1 — Your Passport Is on the eVisa Eligible List
If you hold a British, EU, US, Canadian, Australian, Indian or other listed passport, you apply through the same online portal as everyone else. Same process, same cost, same processing time. You will still need your UK residence document available.
Situation 2 — Your Passport Is Not Listed, But You Hold UK Residence
Holders of a valid and previously used UK, US or Schengen visa or residence permit are frequently eligible for the eVisa or a visa on arrival, even where the passport nationality is not on the primary list.
