A Practical Point for Anyone Who Has Changed Their Name

If you legally changed your name after embracing Islam, your passport, your visa application and your booking must all match your current legal name exactly. A deed poll on its own is not enough — the passport must have been reissued in the new name. This catches people out and it is entirely avoidable if you check now rather than three weeks before departure.

If your passport is still in your former name, that is not a problem in itself. Book in the name on the passport, travel in that name, and everything will be consistent. Problems only arise when the documents disagree with each other.

Where to Get What You Need Locally

• Ihram clothing — order online well ahead, or buy in Bolton or Manchester. It is also widely available and inexpensive in Makkah if you would rather buy there.
• MenACWY vaccination — your Wigan GP surgery. Normally free on the NHS for pilgrimage travel. Arrange it at least ten days before you fly.
• Unscented toiletries — any large supermarket. You need these for Ihram and it is easier to sort at home.

You Are Closer to the Airport Than Almost Anyone

Here is where Wigan does better than the towns with much larger Muslim populations. Manchester Airport is around 25 miles from Wigan, roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car via the M6, M62 and M60 — and it flies direct to Jeddah.

So while Wigan pilgrims have less local community infrastructure than any of those places, they have the shortest run to the aircraft. On the day itself that counts for a good deal, particularly on an early departure.

The Year at a Glance

Ramadan 2027

Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, ending around 9 March, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 to 10 March. The last ten nights begin around 27 February, with Laylat al-Qadr most likely on one of the odd nights and the 27th night falling around 5 to 6 March.

Because Ramadan starts on 8 February, its first ten days fall across the UK February half term — which for families is the strongest opportunity of the year. For a first-time pilgrim travelling alone, we would still gently suggest a quieter month. The 2027 Closure

Umrah is not possible from roughly early April to early June 2027. Saudi Arabia suspends Umrah visas ahead of Hajj and requires Umrah pilgrims to leave the Kingdom before the season begins. Hajj 2027 falls on 14 to 18 May, with the Day of Arafah on Saturday 15 May and Eid al-Adha on Sunday 16 May.

These dates follow the pattern of recent seasons and have not been confirmed for 2027 by the Saudi authorities. Do not plan around Easter 2027 — it falls in late March at the edge of the closing window. May half term falls inside the closure entirely. Speak to us before booking anything for April or May.

Autumn Is the Best Window of the Year

Late September to November brings moderate crowds, temperatures that have eased and prices at their comfortable low. For a first Umrah — particularly if you are travelling without anyone who has been before — autumn 2027 with a 10 or 12-night 3-star package is the combination we would choose. Wigan Borough in Numbers

Wigan borough had a population of around 329,300 at the 2021 Census, making it the second most populated borough in Greater Manchester. The religious profile is unusual for the region: 62.8 per cent Christian, 30.3 per cent no religion, and 1.3 per cent Muslim — approximately 4,300 people.

Greater Manchester Combined Authority research notes that Wigan was the only district in Greater Manchester where a majority of residents described themselves as Christian, against a Greater Manchester average of 47.8 per cent. Is 7 nights enough for a first Umrah?

It works, but it is tight — particularly if nobody in your family has been before, because the first two days go on finding your bearings. Ten nights for another fifty pounds is meaningfully better.

Which duration do you recommend?

Ten nights, and we would press that harder here than almost anywhere. If you are travelling without anyone who has been before, the settling-in period is longer.

What does a 3-star package include?

The same core inclusions as every grade — flights, visa, hotels in both cities, transfers and Ziyarat. The difference is hotel standard and distance from the Haram.

How far are 3-star hotels from the Haram?

Typically 800 metres to 1.5 kilometres, with a complimentary shuttle running day and night.

Is 3-star good enough?

For a fit adult, comfortably. You will spend your days in the Haram rather than the hotel. If you are travelling alone and want to be able to walk back whenever you like, the £51 step to 4-star is worth considering.

When is Ramadan 2027?

Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, ending around 9 March, subject to moon sighting.

Approximately early April to early June 2027, while Saudi Arabia prepares for and holds Hajj.

Can I travel at Easter 2027?

We would advise against planning around it. Easter falls in late March at the edge of the season closing, and any movement in the dates puts the trip at risk.

Should my first Umrah be during Ramadan?

We would gently suggest not, especially if travelling alone. Ramadan in Makkah is extraordinary and also extremely busy, and there is a great deal to absorb on a first visit even without the crowds.

What documents do I need?

A passport valid at least six months beyond your return, a recent photograph, the application, proof of MenACWY vaccination, and confirmed travel and accommodation — which we provide.

Is the meningitis vaccine mandatory?

Yes. Proof of MenACWY vaccination is required for entry, and the UK Health Security Agency advises all Hajj and Umrah travellers to be vaccinated.

Do women need a mahram in 2027?

Between two and four hours for the rites themselves — Tawaf, Sa’i and cutting the hair — depending on how busy the Haram is.

How much walking is involved?

More than most people expect. Sa’i alone is around 3.5 kilometres, on marble, on top of Tawaf. Comfortable sandals you have already broken in matter more than almost anything else you pack.

What should I pack?

Ihram clothing, comfortable sandals you can remove easily, unscented toiletries, a small prayer mat, prescription medication with its documentation, and a refillable water bottle.

What if my passport expires before 2027?

Renew it now rather than closer to travel. You need at least six months of validity beyond your return date.
