Until March 2026, we would have told you not to fly Umrah from Stansted. It is a superb airport for Alicante and Krakow and it was not built for pilgrimage. There are no direct flights to Jeddah or Madinah and there never have been.

That changed on 18 March 2026, and most of the advice online has not caught up.

What changed on 18 March 2026

Turkish Airlines started flying Stansted to Istanbul.

That sounds like an ordinary route launch. For Umrah from the East of England it is the most useful thing that has happened at this airport in years, because Istanbul is a hub that connects onward to Jeddah and Madinah on the same airline and the same ticket.

What the service looks like

Fourteen to fifteen flights a week, so around two a day. The morning departure leaves Stansted at 06:50 and reaches Istanbul at 12:45 local time. The return leaves Istanbul at 20:15 and lands at Stansted at 22:30. Flight time is roughly three hours fifty five eastbound and a little longer coming back into the wind.

Economy carries one checked bag up to 23kg with an 8kg cabin allowance. Turkish advises arriving three hours before international departures at Stansted.

Why this matters more than it looks

Before this route existed, anybody in Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire or Suffolk who wanted a properly ticketed Umrah flight had to cross London to Heathrow or Gatwick. That is two hours and a lot of luggage before you have started.

Now there is a one-stop option leaving from the airport down the road, on a full-service carrier that through-checks your bags and takes responsibility if the connection breaks.

What we still tell people honestly

A connection is a connection. It adds hours and a second boarding, and Heathrow still has direct daily Jeddah services that Stansted does not. If you are travelling with an eighty year old parent, the direct flight from Heathrow is usually still worth the drive.

But for most people from this part of the country, Stansted is now genuinely competitive rather than a compromise. That is a new sentence and we have only been able to write it since March.

The 06:50 problem

Read this before you book, because it decides how you get to the airport.

A morning departure at 06:50 with a three hour check-in recommendation means being at Stansted by around 03:50.

The train does not run that early

The Stansted Express and the local services do not start early enough to have you at the terminal for four in the morning. Neither does the Underground, if you were planning to cross London first. So the train is not an option for the morning flight, however much you wanted it to be.

Your three real choices

Drive and park. Straightforward if somebody in the family has a car and does not mind the cost of a long stay.

Get a lift. Cheapest, and the person driving needs to know about the drop-off charge before they set off rather than after.

Stay at an airport hotel the night before. This is what we recommend for families with children and for anyone travelling with elderly parents. Leaving home at half past two in the morning with four suitcases and a seventy five year old is a bad start to a pilgrimage. A room near the terminal costs less than the stress.

If the evening return lands at 22:30

Coming home is easier because trains are still running, but check the last service to wherever you are going. Coming off a long flight to find you have missed the last train to Cambridge is a miserable way to end the trip.

The Ryanair trap, and why Stansted is where it happens

If you take one thing from this page, take this.

What people do

Stansted is overwhelmingly a low cost airport. You will find, easily, a very cheap Ryanair flight from Stansted to somewhere, and separately a flight from that somewhere onward to Jeddah. Added together they look like a bargain against a properly ticketed route.

They are two separate contracts and they know nothing about each other.

What that actually means

Your bags come off at the intermediate airport. You collect them, leave the secure area, and check in from scratch. If the first flight is delayed by ninety minutes and you miss the onward departure, nobody owes you anything. The first airline delivered you as agreed. The second airline recorded you as a no-show. You buy a new ticket at the desk, on the day, at walk-up prices.

And there is a Ryanair-specific layer on top. It does not interline with other carriers at all, so there is no mechanism for your bag to be transferred even if somebody wanted to help you. The cabin allowance is small, checked bags are priced separately, and there is no concept of a Zamzam allowance on the way home.

Where the money actually goes

Once you have paid for checked bags on the low cost leg, paid for a hotel because the connection did not line up, and accepted that a delay is entirely your problem, the saving is usually gone. And you have taken on a risk that can cost you the whole trip.

What we do instead

Every routing we book from Stansted is a single ticket with protected connections and bags checked through to Jeddah or Madinah. If your first flight runs late, the airline reroutes you. That is not a premium service, it is the minimum standard for a journey you have saved a long time for.

Stansted still runs the 100ml rule

Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol have all moved to a 2 litre liquid allowance. Stansted has not.

Every liquid, gel, paste and aerosol in your hand luggage has to be in a container of 100ml or less. Full-size deodorant and full-size toothpaste are almost always over, and both go in the bin at security most days of the week.

Why this catches people

Because London now has different rules at different airports. Somebody who flew from Heathrow in the spring and packed a big bottle of shampoo in their cabin bag turns up at Stansted expecting the same and loses it.

The Ihram angle

Buy unscented soap in the UK before you travel, in containers of 100ml or under, or put a full-size bottle in the hold. Do not plan to sort it out at Jeddah airport at two in the morning.

And if you decant into your own travel bottles, use proper ones with the capacity printed on by the manufacturer. A handwritten label does not count anywhere in the UK.

What is exempt

Medication and baby food and milk, at every UK airport regardless of the limit. Declare them before screening starts rather than waiting to be asked, and carry the prescription or pharmacy label.

Inside the terminal

One terminal, but not one building

Stansted has a single main terminal with separate satellite buildings holding many of the gates. Some are a walk and others are reached by a free automated transit that runs on a loop.

The practical effect is that your gate can be a good deal further away than the terminal footprint suggests. Check whether yours needs the transit as soon as it appears, and set off then rather than waiting.

Arriving three hours early

Turkish advises three hours for international departures and it is the right number here. Umrah families check in four and five cases each, most of them near the weight limit, and a fair number get opened and repacked at the desk. The queue does not move like a holiday queue.

Prayer facilities

Stansted has multi-faith prayer provision in the terminal, with washing facilities historically located adjacent. Locations shift with building work, so check the terminal map or ask at an information desk on the day rather than relying on a description written earlier.

For a 06:50 departure you will be praying Fajr at the airport, so it is worth locating the room when you arrive rather than when the time comes.

Stansted, Heathrow or Luton? Where you should actually fly from

For the East of England this is a genuine three-way choice, and the answer depends on your dates and who is travelling.

The rule we use

If nobody in your group struggles with travel, and Stansted is your local airport, fly from Stansted. The one-stop routing is fine and you have saved yourself a cross-London journey at both ends of the trip.

If you are taking parents in their seventies or eighties, price Heathrow. The direct flight removes a layover, a second security check and a second boarding, and at that age those three things are the whole difference between an easy day and a hard one.

For East London specifically, do not assume Stansted is closest just because it is in your head as the local airport. From Stratford, Whitechapel or Ilford the Elizabeth line runs to Heathrow without a change, which for a family with luggage is often the easier journey even though the map says otherwise.

Getting to Stansted

Train

The Stansted Express runs to London Liverpool Street, and there are direct services from Cambridge and other points north on the West Anglia line. The station sits under the terminal, which is about as convenient as a UK airport gets.

The catch, again, is the early departure. For a 06:50 flight the trains do not start soon enough. For an afternoon or evening flight the train is the best option there is.

Coach

National Express runs to Stansted from across the East of England and from central London, and there are direct services linking Stansted with the other London airports if your itinerary needs it.

Driving

Straight off the M11 at junction 8, which is a much easier approach than either Heathrow or Gatwick. From most of Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire it is a simple run.

Drop-off

There is a charge for the terminal forecourt drop-off and a free alternative further out with a shuttle. Whoever is driving needs to know which one you are using and how the payment works before they set off, because this is another airport where you pay afterwards rather than at a barrier.

Parking for a long trip

On a 12 or 14 night package, price two weeks of long stay against the cost of a lift or a return train fare. It is often a meaningful chunk of one person’s package.

Why is this worse at Stansted than elsewhere?

Because Stansted is overwhelmingly a low cost airport, so the cheap self-transfer option is always sitting right there in the search results.

Does Ryanair transfer bags to other airlines?

No. It does not interline, so there is no mechanism for it even if somebody wanted to help you.

What happens if my first flight is late?

On a self-transfer, nothing good. The first airline delivered you as agreed and the second recorded you as a no-show. You buy a new ticket at walk-up prices on the day.

Is it actually cheaper?

Can I bring Zamzam back on a low cost carrier?

Visa, vaccine and documents

How do I get an Umrah visa?

We submit it through Nusuk, the official Saudi platform. Four to seven working days.

What documents do you need?

Passport with at least six months validity from your travel date, a passport photo, and your meningococcal ACWY certificate.

Do I need a vaccine?

Yes, meningococcal ACWY is mandatory for the visa. No certificate, no visa.

Where do I get ACWY in Essex or East London?

Your GP, or a private travel clinic. Pharmacy travel services across the region offer it. Allow at least ten days before you fly.

How long is the certificate valid?

Generally several years. Keep it.

Do I need a Turkish visa to transit Istanbul?

Not for an airside transit on a single ticket where you do not pass through Turkish immigration. If your itinerary involves a long layover and you want to leave the airport, ask us and we will check the current position for your nationality.

How long is an Umrah visa valid?

90 days from issue with a 90 day maximum stay, and you can travel anywhere in Saudi Arabia on it.

Can I do Umrah on a Saudi tourist visa?

Yes, tourist visa holders may perform Umrah. Rules change, so confirm the current position before relying on it.

What if my passport is not British?

Not a problem with UK residency, though transit rules can differ by nationality. Tell us at enquiry so we check both the Saudi visa and the transit position.

What if a visa is refused?

Rare, and usually a document issue we can fix and resubmit. We tell you the same day.

Do I need travel insurance?

Strongly recommended, and on a connecting itinerary look specifically at missed connection and delay cover.

Ihram

Where do I change into Ihram?

Not at Stansted. Change during your layover in Istanbul before boarding the Jeddah leg, or on that aircraft before the Miqat.

Do I travel to Stansted in Ihram?

No. Travel normally. You have a four hour flight to Istanbul first.

Is Istanbul set up for changing into Ihram?

Yes. It is a major Umrah transit hub and nobody there will think twice about it. Give yourself twenty minutes and do not leave it to final call.

When is the Miqat crossed?

Flying into Jeddah, roughly half an hour before landing. The crew announce it. You must be in Ihram with your intention made before that point.

What if I fly into Madinah instead?

You do not enter Ihram on the plane at all. You enter it at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, about 9 km outside Madinah on the road to Makkah.

Should I pack Ihram in my hold bag?

No, hand luggage. On a connecting itinerary especially, there is always a chance your case travels separately.

What do women wear for Ihram?

No prescribed garment. Loose modest clothing covering everything except face and hands.

In Saudi Arabia

How close will my hotel be to the Haram?

3 star is typically 700 metres to 1.2 km with a shuttle. 4 star 300 to 700 metres. 5 star 200 to 500 metres, or under 200 on the luxury tiers.

Will you tell me the hotel name before I pay?

Yes, in writing, with the distance in metres and the nearest gate.

Can I get a Kaaba view room?

Yes, on the luxury tier. Pricing is on the luxury packages page.

How far is Jeddah airport from Makkah?

About 90 km, an hour to ninety minutes by road. Included in your package.

How do I get from Makkah to Madinah?

Included. Air conditioned coach, about four and a half hours by road.

What is the time difference?

Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two hours ahead during British Summer Time.

Do you arrange Ziyarat?

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

How do I visit the Rawdah?

Free timed permits through the Nusuk app. Nobody can sell you one. Women visit in separate sessions with fewer slots, so book early.

Can I perform Umrah more than once on one trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Can I bring Zamzam home?

Yes on a full-service carrier, in checked baggage only, and only the official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters.

Does it survive a connection in Istanbul?

Yes, because it is checked through with the rest of your baggage on a single ticket. This is another reason self-transfer itineraries are a false economy.

Is a connecting flight hard with children?

Manageable, and the layover is often a relief rather than a burden because they get to move around. The harder part is the 03:50 arrival at Stansted.

Which package suits elderly parents?

A hotel under 300 metres from the Haram, 12 or 14 nights, November to February. And price the Heathrow direct flight alongside before you decide.

Can I book special assistance?

Yes, through the airline, ideally at least 48 hours before you fly. On a connecting itinerary the assistance carries through to Istanbul as well.

Are wheelchairs available at the Haram?

Yes, at the mosque. There are upper level Tawaf areas designed for wheelchair use where the circuit is longer but far less crowded.

Do children have to perform Umrah?

It is not obligatory before puberty. Many families have them perform it anyway, which is fine.

Can we get connecting rooms?

Yes, and we price them properly rather than squeezing six people into a quad.

Do you do group bookings from Essex and East London?

Yes, from five people upward. Mosque groups, ISoc trips and extended family parties.

Can a group handle a connection?

Comfortably, and often better than individuals, because we keep everyone on the same flights and brief the group organiser on the layover.

Ramadan and timing

Is Umrah in Ramadan equal to Hajj?

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It does not remove the obligation to perform Hajj itself.

When is Ramadan 2027?

Around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting.

How much more does Ramadan cost?

40 to 70 per cent above off-peak, and more again for the last ten nights.

Should I book Stansted or Heathrow for Ramadan?

Whichever has availability, and book early either way. Connection seats through Istanbul in Ramadan go as fast as direct seats.

When should I book for the last ten nights?

As early as you can. Rooms near the Haram for that window sell out earlier than any other date in the year.

Best month if I cannot go in Ramadan?

October or November. Mild, quiet and cheapest.

Can women travel without a Mahram?

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm the position for your specific travel date.

Do you speak Urdu?

Yes, English or Urdu, no difference in price or service.

You are based in Manchester. Does that matter?

Not for the work. Quotes, documents, visas and support all run on WhatsApp and phone, and we book every UK airport.

Can I change my dates after booking?

Usually, subject to airline and hotel rules. Tell us early, because change costs rise sharply near departure.

Who do I contact while I am out there?

Can I add a stopover in Istanbul?

Often yes, since you are transiting there anyway. Ask us at quote stage and we will price it as part of the itinerary rather than as a separate trip.

Can I add a holiday afterwards?

Yes. Turkey combinations are particularly straightforward from Stansted given the routing. See special packages.

Can I book hotels only?

Yes, if you already have your visa and flights. Ask for a land only quote.
