Direct answer: Peterborough is 90 to 95 miles from the nearest airport with direct Saudi flights. On group departures we include the coach so it costs you nothing and you do not have to organise it.

There is no clever answer to Peterborough’s geography. Stansted is an hour away and does not fly to Jeddah. Luton is the same. The two airports that work are Heathrow and Birmingham, and both are roughly ninety miles off.

What we can do is stop it being your problem. Group departures of twelve or more include a coach from Peterborough at no cost, which is the arrangement most community and family bookings from the city use. For smaller bookings we quote a private minibus, or you can take the direct East Coast Main Line service to London King’s Cross in around fifty minutes and continue to Heathrow from there.

The one thing we would ask you not to do is drive and park. Two weeks of long stay parking at Heathrow will cost a family more than the coach, and after a six hour flight home nobody wants a ninety mile drive up the A1 at midnight.

This is the section we wrote this page for. Every Umrah website lists ziyarat as an inclusion. Almost none of them tell you what you are actually going to see.

Ziyarat in Makkah

Jabal al-Noor and the Cave of Hira

The mountain where the first revelation of the Qur’an was received. This is the site people are most eager to visit and the one they are least prepared for. The cave sits near the summit at around 640 metres, and reaching it means a steep climb of between one and two hours in open heat with limited shade.

Most coach ziyarat tours stop at the base, and the great majority of pilgrims look up rather than climb. There is nothing wrong with that. If you intend to make the ascent, treat it as a separate half day expedition, go before Fajr or after Asr, and take far more water than you think you need.

Jabal Thawr

The mountain containing the cave where the Prophet and Abu Bakr sheltered during the migration to Madinah. Higher than Jabal al-Noor at roughly 760 metres and a harder climb, which is why it is visited far less often. Coach tours view it from the road.

Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat

The three sites central to Hajj, visited on the standard Makkah ziyarat route by coach. You will see the vast tent city of Mina standing empty, the open plain of Muzdalifah, and the plain of Arafat with Jabal ar-Rahmah rising from it. Seeing these places outside Hajj season, silent and deserted, affects people more than they expect.

Almost all of this is done seated, which makes it suitable for elderly pilgrims and young children.

Masjid Aisha at Tan’eem

The nearest miqat to Makkah, around seven kilometres from the Haram, and the place you return to if you intend to perform a second or third Umrah during your stay. Transport runs constantly and cheaply. This is the practical reason we push 10 nights and longer.

Jannat al-Mualla

The historic cemetery of Makkah, where members of the Prophet’s family are buried. A short and quiet stop.

Ziyarat in Madinah

Masjid Quba

The first mosque built in Islam, around five kilometres from Masjid an-Nabawi. Praying two rak’ah here is well known for its reward, and unlike the mountains it is completely accessible to everybody. Allow an hour including travel.

Masjid al-Qiblatain

The mosque where the direction of prayer was changed from Jerusalem to Makkah during a prayer in progress. Small, striking, and usually a twenty to thirty minute stop.

Mount Uhud and the martyrs

The site of the Battle of Uhud, where the martyrs including Hamza are buried, with Jabal ar-Rumat, the archers’ hill, alongside. There is a substantial visitor area at the base and the walking is flat and easy. For most pilgrims this is the most affecting stop in Madinah after the Haram itself.

Jannat al-Baqi

The principal cemetery of Madinah, immediately beside Masjid an-Nabawi, where many of the Companions are buried. Access times are limited and differ for men and women, so your group leader will tell you when to go.

The date markets and farms

Not a religious site, but a genuine part of the Madinah experience and where most pilgrims buy dates to bring home. Ajwa dates from Madinah are what everybody in Peterborough will ask you for, so budget accordingly.

A full Makkah ziyarat circuit runs three to four hours by coach. Madinah runs four to five. Both are comfortably manageable for older pilgrims provided you skip the climbs, which the standard tours do anyway.

What Riyad ul-Jannah is

The Prophet described the area between his pulpit and his house as a garden from the gardens of Paradise. It is a small carpeted section within a very large mosque visited by enormous numbers of people, which is why access is now controlled.

How the permit works

Permits are issued free through the official Saudi pilgrimage app, in timed slots, and they are released in advance and taken quickly. Men and women have separate designated hours. You will need the app installed and your details registered before you travel, not after you arrive.

The system has changed several times over recent years, so we confirm the current process and timings for your specific travel dates as part of your pre-departure briefing rather than pointing you at a webpage that may be out of date. Your group leader books slots for the group where the system permits it.

If you do not get a slot

Try again for a different day. Most pilgrims on a 10 nights package with four nights in Madinah manage it. On a 7 nights package with three nights, it is tighter, which is another argument for the longer stay.

Giving salaam

Beyond the Rawdah, the flow past the Prophet’s resting place to give salaam is continuous and moves quickly. You will not have long. Know in advance what you intend to say, because people frequently arrive at the moment they have travelled thousands of miles for and find their mind has gone blank.

Why Madinah feels different

Makkah is intense, vertical and relentless. Madinah is calm, low and unhurried. The pace of the city is slower, the mosque is airier, and the courtyards with their great umbrellas are genuinely pleasant to sit in. Pilgrims who allocate only two or three nights there almost always wish they had given it more, which is worth knowing before you choose a package.

Adab and Etiquette in the Two Harams

Direct answer: Do not film, do not push, and do not risk injury trying to reach the Black Stone. Pointing towards it from a distance is sufficient and is what the overwhelming majority of pilgrims do.

Photography and phones

Photography and video are restricted inside both mosques, particularly in the Mataf and around the Rawdah, and enforcement is real. Beyond the rules, there is a simple point worth making: you have travelled a very long way to be present somewhere. Filming it is the fastest way to not be there.

The Black Stone

Kissing it is a sunnah. It is also, at peak times, the single most dangerous place in the mosque, with serious crushing and frequent injuries. Pointing towards it from a distance as you pass is entirely sufficient. Do not take an elderly parent or a child into that crowd, and do not let anyone convince you it is expected of you.

Crowds, queues and personal space

Pilgrims come from every culture on earth and expectations about queuing and personal space vary enormously. Somebody stepping in front of you is very rarely being rude by their own standards. This is the most common source of frustration we hear about and it dissolves the moment you stop reading it as disrespect.

Dress

Modest dress throughout for everybody. Men in ihram wear the two unstitched sheets. Women wear ordinary modest clothing with no specific colour required, and the face need not be covered. Comfortable footwear that slips on and off easily will improve your trip more than almost anything else you pack.

January is the most comfortable month at around 30°C in Makkah. The second half of March, immediately after Eid, is the outstanding value period. June through September is cheapest and hottest at up to 43°C, which also makes any mountain climb inadvisable. October and November offer good conditions at moderate prices. December is pleasant but school holidays lift it to the second annual peak.
