Not deliberately. It’s a numbers problem.

The 2021 Census recorded 10,870 Muslims living in Northern Ireland, which is 0.57 per cent of the population. That’s up from 3,832 in 2011 and 1,943 in 2001, so it has more than doubled in a decade and it’s the fastest growing religious group in the region. In absolute terms it’s still small. In Omagh town itself, 228 people recorded a religion other than Christian at the last census.

What that means practically. There isn’t a Tyrone Umrah agency. There isn’t a mosque noticeboard in Omagh with three competing group trips pinned to it. There isn’t an uncle who did his Umrah last year and can tell you which agent to call, because there probably isn’t an uncle who did his Umrah last year within twenty miles of you.

And the Muslim community in Northern Ireland comes from over forty different countries of origin, so it isn’t the concentrated single-community pattern you get in Bradford or Blackburn where everyone books through the same three people. Omagh Muslims are doctors at the Western Trust, engineers, students, business owners, families resettled here in the last decade. Different languages, different starting points, no shared booking network.

Your four airport options from Omagh

The honest recommendation

For most Omagh bookings we route through Dublin.

It’s the furthest drive, and it wins anyway. Dublin Airport has four Middle East carriers operating daily, which means one ticket, one baggage tag from Dublin to Jeddah, and one airline responsible for you if anything goes wrong. Belfast International is a brilliant airport for Alicante and Kraków. It is not built for Umrah.

Where Belfast City wins is when a British Airways or Aer Lingus connection through Heathrow prices well, because that’s also a proper through-ticket. We check both every time.

The self-transfer trap, and why it matters more than the fare

Read this bit even if you skip everything else.

You will find, on a comparison site, a very cheap flight from Belfast International to Manchester, and separately a Saudia flight from Manchester to Jeddah. Booked together they look like a bargain. They are two separate contracts.

What that means. Your bags come off at Manchester and you collect them, exit the secure area, check in again from scratch. If the Belfast leg is delayed by ninety minutes and you miss the Jeddah departure, nobody owes you anything. The first airline delivered you to Manchester as agreed. The second airline watched you not turn up. You buy a new ticket at the desk, at walk-up prices, on the day.

It happens to Northern Irish travellers more than anyone else in the UK, because so many NI routes are low cost point to point carriers that don’t interline.

Every routing we book for Omagh is a single ticket with protected connections. If you get delayed, the airline reroutes you. That’s not a premium feature, it’s just how it should be done.

What if I don’t drive?

Omagh hasn’t had a railway station since 1965, so it’s buses or a lift.

Translink runs the 273 and X273 Goldliner between Belfast and Derry through Omagh, roughly hourly, taking about an hour forty five to Belfast Grand Central. For Dublin Airport there’s a direct Expressway coach from the Omagh depot on Mountjoy Road, and Translink’s X3 runs Dublin Airport to Omagh twice daily. Coach fares to Dublin Airport tend to run around £19 to £27 each way.

If you’re on an early flight from Dublin, factor in that a 2am coach doesn’t exist. Most people either take the last coach the night before and use an airport hotel, or get a lift.

Driving to Dublin Airport from Omagh: things people get caught out by

The border is not an issue

You cross into the Republic somewhere around Aughnacloy or Strabane depending on your route, and there’s nothing to stop for. Common Travel Area. No checks, no paperwork, no queue.

The M50 toll is

If your route to the airport uses the M50, that toll is barrier free. There is no booth and nobody takes your money. You have to pay it online yourself, by 8pm the following day, or you get a penalty that escalates. Plenty of Northern Irish drivers find out about this weeks later.

Check your car insurance covers the Republic

Most NI policies do. Some restrict the number of days. A quick call to your insurer before you go is five minutes well spent.

You’re in euro country

Northern Ireland uses sterling, the Republic uses euro. Dublin Airport parking, food and fuel on the way are all euro. Cards work everywhere, but if you like carrying cash, carry the right one.

Parking adds up on a 14 night trip

Long stay parking for two weeks is a real cost at any airport and it’s worth pricing against a return coach or a lift. On a 14 night package it can be the difference between two people or three going.

British passport or Irish passport?

This question comes up on nearly every Northern Ireland booking and almost no UK Umrah page addresses it.

Under the Belfast Agreement, people born in Northern Ireland can identify as British, Irish or both, and can hold a British passport, an Irish passport, or both. Plenty of Omagh families have one of each in the same house.

Does it change your Umrah visa?

No. Both British and Irish passport holders need a Saudi visa for Umrah, and both are obtained the same way through Nusuk, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s official platform. Same process, same documents, same timescale.

So which one should I travel on?

Whichever has more validity left. Saudi Arabia requires at least six months from your date of travel. If your British passport expires in four months and your Irish one runs to 2031, travel on the Irish one.

Can I use one to fly and one for the visa?

No. Never. The visa is issued against a specific passport number and you must travel on that same document. Mixing them will stop you at check-in in Dublin before you get anywhere near Saudi Arabia. Tell us which passport you’re using at the start and we build everything around it.

What if my passport isn’t British or Irish?

Not a problem. We handle Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian, Nigerian, Sudanese, Somali, Syrian and other passports regularly, alongside UK or Irish residency. Processing times vary by nationality so tell us at the enquiry stage rather than after you’ve paid.

The meningitis vaccine in Northern Ireland

Saudi Arabia requires proof of meningococcal ACWY vaccination before it will issue an Umrah visa. No certificate, no visa. This catches people out constantly.

Where to get it in and around Omagh

Northern Ireland runs Health and Social Care rather than the NHS structures used in England, and Omagh sits inside the Western Health and Social Care Trust. Start with your own GP practice. Many NI practices provide the Hajj and Umrah ACWY vaccine privately rather than free, so ask about the charge when you book the appointment.

If your practice doesn’t do travel vaccines, private travel clinics and pharmacy travel services in Omagh, Enniskillen, Dungannon and Derry all offer ACWY.

How long does it take to work?

Allow at least ten days between the injection and your flight. Saudi Arabia will not accept a certificate dated inside that window, and the certificate is generally valid for several years afterwards, so keep it.

When should I book the appointment?

The moment you pay your deposit. Not the week before you fly. GP appointment waits in the Western Trust area can run to a fortnight and that’s before the ten day gap.

Where to put on Ihram when your flight connects

Almost nothing written about Umrah addresses this, because it assumes you boarded a direct flight to Jeddah. From Omagh you never will. So here’s how it actually works on a connecting itinerary.

You do not leave Omagh in Ihram

Nobody expects you to drive to Dublin in two white sheets. You travel in normal clothes and change later.

If you connect through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul

You change at the transit airport, during your layover, before boarding the Jeddah leg. Doha and Dubai both have dedicated Ihram changing facilities in the transit area, and the Gulf carriers are entirely used to it. Give yourself twenty minutes and don’t leave it until final call.

If you connect through Heathrow

Same principle. Change at Heathrow before the Jeddah flight, or change on board before the Miqat is crossed. Cabin crew on Saudi-bound flights announce it.

The Miqat gets crossed in the air

Flying into Jeddah, the boundary is passed roughly half an hour before landing and the crew make an announcement. You need to have entered Ihram and made your intention before that point, not after. This is the single most common mistake on connecting itineraries, because people assume they can sort it out at Jeddah airport. You can’t.

Flying into Madinah first avoids the whole problem

If your routing takes you to Madinah before Makkah, you don’t enter Ihram on the plane at all. You spend your Madinah nights in normal clothes, then enter Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, which is about 9 km outside Madinah on the road to Makkah. Your coach stops there.

For a first Umrah from Northern Ireland, this is often the calmer way round. You land, you sleep, you get over the travel, and you deal with Ihram on the ground with a proper changing facility and no clock running.

Pack your Ihram in hand luggage

Not the hold. On a two-leg journey there’s always a chance your case takes a later flight, and arriving in Jeddah without your Ihram is a problem you can avoid entirely by putting it in your cabin bag. Same for your medication and your vaccine certificate.

Umrah for elderly parents from Omagh

The drive is part of the trip

Two hours to Dublin before an eight hour flight is a long day for someone in their late seventies. Build in a break, or consider an airport hotel the night before rather than leaving Omagh at 3am.

Pay for distance, not for the view

Upper level Tawaf

Wheelchairs are available at the mosque and there are dedicated Tawaf areas on the upper levels where the circuit is longer but far less crowded. Plan for it from the start rather than discovering it on day two.

Go in winter

November through February keeps Makkah between roughly 20 and 30 degrees. June through August runs past 40. For an older pilgrim that decides whether they manage two prayers a day or five.

Book longer, not shorter

Counterintuitive when someone is frail, and still correct. On 12 or 14 nights a missed Fajr is nothing, you go tomorrow. On 7 nights every missed prayer feels like a loss.

Northern Ireland school holidays don’t always line up with England and Wales. NI schools typically break for a fortnight at Halloween where English schools take one week, and the summer break usually starts at the end of June rather than mid July.

That Halloween fortnight is the single best Umrah window in the Northern Irish school year. Makkah sits around 30 to 35 degrees, crowds are moderate, and you get two weeks without touching your annual leave.

Do children have to perform Umrah?

It isn’t obligatory before puberty. Plenty of families have children perform it anyway and there’s nothing wrong with that. Practically, each child in Ihram needs one adult whose only job is that child.

Best months to go from Northern Ireland

Do I need travel insurance?

Strongly recommended. Look for cancellation, medical and repatriation cover. Some NI insurers exclude the Republic on driving cover, so read that bit too if you’re driving to Dublin.

How close will my hotel be?

Depends on the tier. 3 star is typically 700 metres to 1.2 km with a shuttle. 4 star 300 to 700 metres. 5 star 200 to 500 metres, or under 200 on the luxury tiers.

Will you tell me the hotel name before I pay?

Yes, in writing, with the distance in metres and the nearest gate.

What if you can’t confirm the hotel yet?

We give you the shortlist and a guaranteed maximum distance, rather than writing near Haram and hoping.

Is it worth paying for a hotel closer to the Haram?

Under 300 metres, yes, especially in summer or with older travellers. It decides how many times a day you go back to the room.

Which gate will I use?

It depends on the hotel. King Abdulaziz Gate, also called Gate 1, serves the hotels on the eastern side. King Fahd Gate serves the western Jabal Omar side. We name it in the quote.

Can I get a Kaaba view room?

How far is the Madinah hotel?

Central Madinah hotels sit 100 to 250 metres from Masjid an-Nabawi. The proximity premium there is much smaller than in Makkah.

Is breakfast included?

On 4 and 5 star, yes. On 3 star it varies by property and we confirm it in the quote.

Should I spend more on Makkah or Madinah?

Makkah. You spend more Madinah time inside the mosque anyway, and the walk there is shorter and flatter.

How far is Jeddah airport from Makkah?

How do I get from Makkah to Madinah?

What’s the time difference?

Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of Northern Ireland in winter and two hours ahead during British Summer Time.

Do you arrange Ziyarat tours?

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

What is the Rawdah and how do I visit it?

The area between the Prophet’s minbar and his resting place, peace be upon him. Access runs on free timed permits through the Nusuk app. Nobody can sell you one.

Are women’s Rawdah hours different?

Yes, women visit in separate timed sessions and there are fewer of them, so book the permit as early as you can.

Can I perform Umrah more than once on one trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Is there halal food everywhere?

All of it. That’s not a question you need to think about in Makkah or Madinah.

Will people speak English?

Widely in hotels and shops around both Harams. Your travel pack includes hotel addresses written in Arabic for taxi drivers.

Elderly, families and accessibility

Which package suits elderly parents best?

A hotel under 300 metres from the Haram, 12 or 14 nights, travelling between November and February.

Is the drive to Dublin too much for an older traveller?

It’s two hours before a long flight, so plan it properly. A break on the way, or an airport hotel the night before, makes a real difference.

Are wheelchairs available at the Haram?

Yes, at the mosque itself. There are also upper level Tawaf areas designed for wheelchair use.

Can Tawaf be performed in a wheelchair?

Yes. The upper level circuit is longer because the radius is bigger, so allow more time.

Do you arrange medical support?

We can’t provide medical care. We do pick hotels near the Haram clinics, brief you on facilities, and note conditions on your booking. Bring medications with generic names written down.

Is Umrah suitable for young children?

Plenty of families manage it. Each child in Ihram needs one adult whose only job is that child.

Can we get connecting rooms?

Yes, and we’ll price them rather than squeezing six people into a quad.

When do Northern Ireland schools break for Halloween?

Usually a full fortnight at the end of October, which is longer than most English school breaks. It’s the best Umrah window in the NI school year.

Ramadan and timing

Is Umrah in Ramadan equal to Hajj?

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It doesn’t remove the obligation to perform Hajj itself.

When is Ramadan 2027?

It begins around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting.

How much more expensive is Ramadan?

Expect 40 to 70 per cent above off-peak, and more again for the last ten nights.

When should I book for the last ten nights?

As early as you can. Rooms close to the Haram for that window sell out earlier than any other date.

Does fasting make the trip harder?

From Northern Ireland, the flight day is the awkward part. Travellers are permitted not to fast while travelling and to make the days up later. Speak to someone you trust for guidance on your own situation.

Best month if I can’t do Ramadan?

October or November. Mild, quiet and cheapest.

Is August a bad time?

It’s 38 to 45 degrees. If it’s the only window you have, book close to the Haram and do Tawaf at Fajr or after midnight.

No prescribed Ihram garment for women. Loose modest clothing covering everything except face and hands. Good shoes matter more than people expect.

Can I add a holiday afterwards?
