With wards at eighty per cent plus, Umrah tends to be arranged in groups. Extended families, mosque parties, whole streets travelling together. More on that further down.

And the community is more varied than people assume

Seventy one per cent of Birmingham’s Muslim community give English as their main language. Of the rest, seven per cent give Urdu, four per cent Bengali and four per cent Arabic.

Birmingham is not a single-community city in the way Blackburn or Bradford tends to be. Alongside a large Pakistani population, the city has substantial Bangladeshi, Somali, Yemeni and Arab communities, and the Umrah conversation lands differently in each.

One terminal, which is a bigger advantage than it sounds

Birmingham Airport runs a single passenger terminal serving more than forty airlines and around 120 destinations. It handled a record 13.65 million passengers in 2025 and is the UK’s seventh busiest airport.

Why this matters

At Heathrow you can arrive at the wrong terminal and miss a flight. At Manchester, Terminal 1 closed in November 2025 and people are still turning up at a building that no longer takes passengers.

At Birmingham there is nowhere else to go. You arrive, you check in, you go through the one security hall. For a family with three children and six suitcases, taking that decision off the table is worth more than any lounge.

The one thing to know about the layout

Long-haul gates are generally further from security than short-haul ones. So even though the terminal is simple, the walk to a Jeddah gate is longer than the walk to a Malaga gate. Build that into your timing, particularly with elderly relatives or a pushchair.

How early to arrive

Birmingham Airport itself recommends at least three hours for long-haul and two for short-haul. Take the three hours seriously on Umrah flights.

The reason is the baggage. Umrah families check in four and five cases each, most of them at the weight limit, and a fair number get opened and repacked on the floor by the desk. That queue does not move like a holiday queue. In Ramadan and the summer holidays it moves slower still.

Birmingham’s liquid rules are better than most of the country

Two litres, and no limit on how many

Birmingham allows liquids, pastes and gels in containers of up to 2 litres in hand luggage. Anything bigger goes in the hold. And in the airport’s own words, there is no limit on the number of 2 litre containers you can carry.

That second part is the bit worth reading twice. It is more generous than most people assume and it is genuinely useful on an Umrah trip, where a family is packing unscented soap and shampoo for several people in Ihram.

How Birmingham got here

The airport spent £60 million on a new, larger security screening hall, privately financed, built from January 2022 and designed to handle a projected 18 million passengers a year by 2033. The scanners were ready well before the rule changed. What took time was Department for Transport approval, which every airport has to obtain separately.

Liquids and laptops now stay in your bag through the scanner, and the clear plastic bag is gone.

The trap on the way home

The 2 litre allowance is a Birmingham rule. It is not a UK rule and it certainly is not a Saudi one.

Jeddah and Madinah run the 100ml limit. So do a long list of UK airports including Manchester, East Midlands, Luton, Stansted and Leeds Bradford. If any part of your journey home passes through one of those, pack for 100ml on that leg.

Simple rule to travel by: pack generously leaving Birmingham, pack tight coming back.

Two details that catch people

Vacuum flasks and insulated metal bottles still have to be emptied, even where the 2 litre rule applies. Bring them empty and fill them airside.

And duty free liquids bought in Jeddah come in a sealed tamper-evident bag with the receipt inside. If you have a connection, leave it sealed. Open it and it becomes an ordinary liquid at your next security check.

Getting to Birmingham Airport

The Air-Rail Link

Birmingham has something no other UK airport has. A free automated people mover connecting the terminal directly to Birmingham International railway station in about two minutes.

There is a signposted walking route as well, which is fine if you are travelling light. With Umrah luggage, use the Air-Rail Link.

Trains

Birmingham International sits on the West Coast Main Line, which is why the train is such a strong option here. Avanti West Coast runs up to three direct trains an hour to London Euston in around seventy minutes, and the station is served from across the Midlands and the North West.

For families coming from Coventry, Wolverhampton, Sandwell or Walsall, the train plus the Air-Rail Link is often less stressful than driving and parking, and on a fourteen night trip it is usually cheaper too.

Driving in 2026, and the warning worth reading

Birmingham Airport is currently flagging major HS2 motorway works across the West Midlands through 2026. If you are driving to the airport this year, check your route the night before rather than trusting a journey time you remember from last year.

This matters more for an Umrah flight than a holiday flight, because you are already trying to arrive three hours early with a car full of luggage. Half an hour lost to a closure on the M42 or M6 is the difference between comfortable and frantic.

Parking and drop-off

There is a charge to use the terminal drop-off area, and a free drop-off option further out with a shuttle. If somebody is dropping you off, agree which one you are using before you set off rather than arguing about it on the approach road.

For long stays, price two weeks of parking against the train. On a family booking that difference can be a meaningful part of one person’s package.

If you have flexibility, October half term wins. Makkah is comfortable, crowds are moderate, prices have not moved, and you are not asking anyone for time off.

How many nights with children

It is not obligatory before puberty. Many families have children perform it anyway and there is nothing wrong with that.

The practical point is different. A child in Ihram inside a crowd needs one adult whose only job is that child. If you have three children and two adults, think that through before you are standing in the Mataf.

What actually helps with young children

Proximity, more than anything. A hotel under 300 metres means you can take a child back to the room mid-afternoon and return later. A hotel a kilometre out means you are committing to hours in the Haram whether the four year old is up for it or not.

Second, a pushchair is more useful than people expect, including for carrying bags and shoes. Third, plan for one adult to miss some prayers in the mosque. That is not a failure, it is how it works with small children.

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

How do I visit the Rawdah?

Free timed permits through the Nusuk app. Nobody can sell you one. Women visit in separate sessions with fewer slots, so book early.

Can I perform Umrah more than once on one trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Can I bring Zamzam home?

Yes, checked baggage only, and only the official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters. Shop-bought Zamzam gets refused at check-in.

How much Zamzam for a family of five?

One 5 litre bottle each, so twenty five litres. That is twenty five kilos coming off the belt at Birmingham. Bring a trolley coin.

Ramadan and timing

Is Umrah in Ramadan equal to Hajj?

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It does not remove the obligation to perform Hajj itself.

When is Ramadan 2027?

Around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting.

How much more does Ramadan cost?

40 to 70 per cent above off-peak, and more again for the last ten nights.

When should I book for the last ten nights?

As early as you can. Rooms near the Haram for that window sell out earlier than any other date in the year.

Is Birmingham Airport busier in Ramadan?

The Jeddah and Madinah desks certainly are, given the size of the local community. Three hours becomes a minimum rather than a comfortable margin.

Can children go in Ramadan?

Plenty do. Bear in mind the Haram fills hours before Maghrib during the last ten nights, so a hotel close by matters far more than usual.

Best month if I cannot go in Ramadan?

October half term if you have children. November if you do not.

Can women travel without a Mahram?

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm the position for your specific travel date.

Do you speak Urdu?

Yes, English or Urdu, no difference in price or service.

What if the person travelling speaks Bengali, Arabic or Somali?

Tell us at the start. We work in English and Urdu, so we will make sure everything is explained clearly through whoever in the family is translating rather than assuming it landed first time.

Can I change my dates after booking?

Usually, subject to airline and hotel rules. Tell us early, because change costs rise sharply near departure.

What if my flight is cancelled?
