This is the most valuable thing on this page and it is worth actual money.

Scottish schools break up before English ones

Scottish summer holidays start in late June and finish in the middle of August. English and Welsh schools break up in the third week of July and go back in early September. So there is a window of roughly three weeks at the end of June and the start of July when Scottish children are off school and English ones are not.

Airlines and hotels price around the English calendar, because that is where the volume is. Which means those three weeks sit in shoulder-season pricing while your children are already on holiday.

If you are a Glasgow family with school-age children, that is the single best value window in your year, and most people never think to use it because everyone assumes school holidays and peak pricing are the same thing. In Scotland, for three weeks, they are not.

And your October break is twice as long

Most Scottish councils run a two week October holiday. Most English authorities give one. October is already the best month in the year for Umrah on weather and crowds, and Scottish families get double the room to use it.

A two week October break covers a 12 night package without touching a single day of annual leave. That is a combination nobody south of the border can match.

The catch, and it is a real one

Scottish local authorities set their own term dates. Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire do not always line up with each other, and they change year to year.

So check your own council calendar before you commit, particularly if you have children at schools in two different authorities, which happens more often than people expect around the Glasgow boundary.

Glasgow or Edinburgh? They are not the same airport

Fifty miles apart, and genuinely different for this purpose.

Security rules differ

Edinburgh has moved to a 2 litre liquid allowance. Glasgow has not, and still runs the 100ml per container limit. Two Scottish airports, an hour apart, operating under different rules because each one needs its own Department for Transport approval.

This catches people constantly. Somebody flies out of Edinburgh in the spring with a full-size bottle of shampoo in their cabin bag, tries the same thing at Glasgow in the autumn, and loses it.

Routings differ

Glasgow has no direct Saudi service, but it does have a daily Emirates A380 to Dubai. For Umrah that is the strongest one-stop routing out of Scotland, because it is a wide-body aircraft on a full-service airline that through-checks your bags and connects onward to Jeddah and Madinah on the same ticket.

Edinburgh has its own Gulf connections. Which one prices better depends entirely on your dates, and we check both.

The honest recommendation

If you live in Glasgow, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire or Ayrshire, fly from Glasgow. The airport is closer, easier to reach and considerably easier to walk around.

If you live in Edinburgh, Fife, the Lothians or the Borders, fly from Edinburgh. Crossing the central belt with luggage to save a few pounds is a bad trade.

If you are in Stirling, Falkirk or somewhere genuinely in between, let us price both. The difference is often larger than people assume.

The airport with no railway station

Glasgow Airport does not have a train station. It never got one. The rail link was planned and cancelled, and the position has not changed since.

What you use instead

The Glasgow Airport Express, service 500, run by First Glasgow. It goes from Stance 1 at the terminal to the city centre, reaching stops near Glasgow Central and Queen Street in fifteen to twenty five minutes. It runs around the clock and every ten to fifteen minutes through the day, on electric double deckers since 2025.

For a family with four suitcases heading for a morning departure, it is genuinely the most reliable option there is, and it works at hours when nothing else does.

If you are coming by train from elsewhere in Scotland

The nearest station is Paisley Gilmour Street, about a mile away, with local buses linking it to the terminal. Trains from there run frequently to Glasgow Central and out across the west of Scotland.

So somebody coming from Ayr, Largs or Greenock can train to Paisley and bus across, rather than going into Glasgow and back out again.

Driving

Straight off the M8 at junction 28, which puts most of the west of Scotland within an easy run. From the Southside, Pollokshields or Govanhill it is about twenty minutes on a clear road.

Drop-off and parking

There is a charge for the terminal forecourt drop-off and cheaper options a little further out. Whoever is driving needs to know which one you are using and how the payment works before they set off, because like most UK airports it is now camera enforced rather than barriered.

On a 12 or 14 night package, price two weeks of long stay against a return on the 500 bus. It is usually a meaningful part of one person’s package.

Inside the terminal

One security hall, and one very specific peak

Security at Glasgow is centralised in the SkyHub area on the first floor. Every passenger goes through the same checkpoint regardless of airline or check-in area.

That has an obvious consequence. It builds up fast between five and nine in the morning, and again through July and August. If your Dubai connection leaves in the morning, you are in that peak.

The good news, which is real

Glasgow is compact. Once you are through security, the walk to any gate is typically under ten minutes.

After Gatwick, where some gates are a twenty minute hike across a bridge over a live taxiway, that is a serious advantage. With elderly parents or small children it is the difference between a calm hour and a stressful one.

How early to arrive

Three hours for your long-haul connection. Not because the airport is slow once you are through, but because of that morning security peak combined with the Umrah baggage factor. Families check in four and five cases each, most at the weight limit, and plenty get opened and repacked at the desk.

Prayer facilities

The terminal has multi-faith prayer provision. Locations move with building work, so check the terminal map or ask at an information desk on the day rather than relying on a description written months earlier.

If you are on an early departure you will be praying Fajr at the airport, so it is worth locating the room when you arrive rather than when the time comes.

Glasgow still runs the 100ml rule

Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham and Edinburgh have all moved to a 2 litre liquid allowance. Glasgow has not. Manchester, Stansted, Luton and Liverpool have not either.

Every liquid, gel, paste and aerosol in your hand luggage must be in a container of 100ml or less. Full-size deodorant and full-size toothpaste are almost always over.

What has changed

The clear plastic bag requirement has been dropped at most UK airports including Glasgow, so liquids can generally stay inside your hand luggage at the scanner. The container limit itself has not moved. Follow the signage on the day, because this is the detail that varies most between airports.

The Ihram angle

Buy unscented soap in the UK before you travel, in containers of 100ml or under, or put a full-size bottle in the hold. And if you decant into your own travel bottles, use proper ones with the capacity printed on by the manufacturer. A handwritten label does not pass anywhere in Britain.

The whole route matters, not just Glasgow

Dubai, Jeddah and Madinah all have their own rules, and your connection means a second screening. The safe approach on a Glasgow itinerary is to pack to 100ml for the entire trip in both directions.

Scotland ran its census in 2022 rather than 2021, so the figures below are National Records of Scotland data and do not line up with the England and Wales numbers you may have seen elsewhere.

Scotland recorded 119,872 Muslims in 2022, which is 2.2 per cent of the population, up from 76,737 in 2011. Glasgow City accounts for 48,766 of them, or 7.9 per cent of the city, the highest share of any Scottish city. Edinburgh sits at 3.5 per cent, Dundee at 4.2 and Aberdeen at 2.9.

Where it is concentrated

The Southside. Pollokshields is around 27.8 per cent Muslim and Southside Central about 15.7 per cent. Thirteen Scottish wards have a Muslim population above five per cent, and eleven of them are in Glasgow or East Renfrewshire.

One statistic that matters for booking

In Pollokshields, where Muslims are 28 per cent of the overall population, they are 48 per cent of five to fifteen year olds.

Scotland does this differently to England

Where do I change into Ihram?

What if I fly into Madinah?

You do not enter Ihram on the plane at all. You enter it at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, about 9 km outside Madinah on the road to Makkah.

Should I pack Ihram in my hold bag?

No, hand luggage. On a connecting itinerary especially, there is always a chance your case travels separately.

What do women wear for Ihram?

No prescribed garment. Loose modest clothing covering everything except face and hands.

In Saudi Arabia

How close will my hotel be to the Haram?

3 star is typically 700 metres to 1.2 km with a shuttle. 4 star 300 to 700 metres. 5 star 200 to 500 metres, or under 200 on the luxury tiers.

Do you arrange Ziyarat?

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

How do I visit the Rawdah?

Free timed permits through the Nusuk app. Nobody can sell you one. Women visit in separate sessions with fewer slots, so book early.

Can I perform Umrah more than once on one trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Can I bring Zamzam back to Glasgow?

Yes, in checked baggage only, and only the official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters. Shop-bought Zamzam gets refused at check-in.

Does it survive the Dubai connection?

Yes, because it is checked through with the rest of your baggage on a single ticket.

Families, elderly pilgrims and groups

Which package suits elderly parents?

A hotel under 300 metres from the Haram, 12 or 14 nights, travelling between November and February. And build in rest after the connection.

Is a connecting flight hard for an older traveller?

It is a long day. Book special assistance through the airline, which carries through Dubai as well, and choose a longer stay so the first day can be a rest day.

Can I book special assistance at Glasgow?

Yes, through the airline, ideally at least 48 hours before you fly. Tell us and we note it on the booking and remind you.

Are wheelchairs available at the Haram?

Yes, at the mosque. There are upper level Tawaf areas designed for wheelchair use where the circuit is longer but far less crowded.

Is Umrah suitable for young children?

Plenty of Glasgow families manage it. Each child in Ihram needs one adult whose only job is that child.

Do children have to perform Umrah?

It is not obligatory before puberty. Many families have them perform it anyway, which is fine.

Can we get connecting rooms?

Yes, and we price them properly rather than squeezing six people into a quad.

Do you do group bookings from Scotland?

Yes, from five people upward. Mosque groups, ISoc trips from the Glasgow and Strathclyde universities, and extended family parties.

Can a group handle a connection?

Comfortably, and often better than individuals, because we keep everyone on the same flights and brief the group organiser on the layover.

Ramadan and timing

Is Umrah in Ramadan equal to Hajj?

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It does not remove the obligation to perform Hajj itself.

When is Ramadan 2027?

Around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting.

How much more does Ramadan cost?

40 to 70 per cent above off-peak, and more again for the last ten nights.

When should I book for the last ten nights?

As early as you can. Rooms near the Haram for that window sell out earlier than any other date in the year.

Does fasting make the travel day harder?

From Scotland it is a long journey with a connection. Travellers are permitted not to fast while travelling and to make the days up later. Speak to someone you trust about your own situation.

Best month if I cannot go in Ramadan?

October, and in Scotland you have two weeks of it.

Can women travel without a Mahram?

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm the position for your specific travel date.

Do you speak Urdu?

Yes, English or Urdu, no difference in price or service.

What if the traveller speaks Arabic or Somali?

Tell us at the start. Around 14.5 per cent of Scottish Muslims are of Arab heritage, so this comes up. We will make sure everything is explained clearly through whoever in the family is translating.

You are based in Manchester. Does that matter?

Can I change my dates after booking?

Usually, subject to airline and hotel rules. Tell us early, because change costs rise sharply near departure.
