Bradford

In 2021, 30.5 per cent of Bradford district described themselves as Muslim, up from 24.7 per cent a decade earlier. That rise of 7.6 percentage points was the largest increase of any religious group in the district. Over the same period the Christian share fell from 45.9 per cent to 33.4.

Bradford also has the second largest proportion of people of Pakistani ethnic origin of any district in England, at 25.5 per cent, up five points since 2011.

And it is very young

Bradford is the second youngest city in England after Peterborough. Around 22.3 per cent of the district is aged under sixteen, the ninth highest share in the country, and the median age is 36.9 against an England average of 40.2.

Bradford district now holds around 563,600 people, making it the fifth largest metropolitan district in England.

Why any of this matters for booking

Two things follow, and they shape most of what we do for Yorkshire customers.

First, a young population means family bookings. Most enquiries from Bradford and Kirklees are four, five or six people with children in school, not couples. So school holiday dates and exact children’s ages do more to move the total price than anything else.

Second, this density means group travel is the norm rather than the exception. Mosque parties, extended families and whole streets travelling together. We handle a lot of these and they need planning rather than improvising.

What Leeds Bradford Airport actually flies

Ten airlines as of this summer. Jet2, which is headquartered on the airport grounds and runs around 183 departures a week, plus easyJet, Ryanair, TUI, Wizz Air, KLM, Aer Lingus and a couple of smaller operators. Around 105 destinations across Europe and North Africa.

The two longest routes are Hurghada at about five hours forty and Sharm el Sheikh at five thirty five. That is the outer limit of what this airport does.

The two hub connections

There are exactly two routes from LBA that plug into a global network on a single ticket.

KLM to Amsterdam

Daily, and the more useful of the two. Amsterdam is a full hub, so onward connections are ticketed through and your bags are checked to the destination.

Aer Lingus to Dublin

Dublin has Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and Turkish all operating daily, so on paper it looks promising. In practice the through-ticketing depends on the airline pairing, and it is not always available.

Our honest view on both

We check them. Occasionally one produces a sensible itinerary for a specific set of dates and we book it.

Most of the time they do not, because you are adding a second connection to a journey that already needs one. Leeds to Amsterdam to somewhere to Jeddah is three flights and two changes for a trip that should be two flights and one change from Manchester.

We will always price it and show you. We just will not pretend it is usually the answer.

Manchester is your airport, and the train is the bit nobody uses

Manchester Airport is around 55 miles from Bradford and has direct Saudi services. That is where we route nearly every West Yorkshire booking.

The direct train

Direct trains run from Leeds to Manchester Airport. They call at Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly on the way, so a large part of Kirklees is on the line without a change either.

Journey time is roughly an hour and a half. It costs less than two weeks of airport parking, it does not care about the M62, and it drops you at a station that connects straight into the terminal.

For an Umrah trip with four suitcases, that is a genuinely better option than driving, and it is the thing most Yorkshire families never consider because they assume you have to drive to an airport.

From Bradford specifically

You change once, either at Leeds or by heading across to the Huddersfield line. Still simpler than the M62 on a Friday afternoon.

When driving does win

If you are five or six people with a full car load, driving usually still comes out ahead, and the run down the M62 takes about an hour and fifteen from Bradford in normal traffic.

Check the parking cost first though. On a 14 night package, two weeks of long stay for one car can be a meaningful chunk of one person’s package.

What about the 2027 promise?

You may have seen headlines saying Leeds Bradford is getting Middle East flights.

What was actually said

The airport’s chief executive told the BBC that LBA was in conversations with airlines from the Middle East and North America, named Jeddah, Oman and Dubai as possible destinations, and said he would be disappointed if there were no Middle East flights by 2027.

What that means for you

It is an ambition, not a timetable. Nobody has announced a route, a carrier or a start date. Conversations with airlines are a normal part of running an airport and most of them do not become flights.

If a Jeddah service ever launches from Leeds Bradford it will be the best news Yorkshire pilgrims have had in years, and we will rewrite this page the day it is confirmed. Until then, book from Manchester and ignore the headlines.

If you do fly from LBA, know these things

Some people will use Leeds Bradford anyway, whether for a connection that happens to work or for a combined trip. Here is what the airport is actually like.

There is no railway station

This is the airport’s most complained-about limitation. A rail link has been proposed and has planning support, but as of 2026 there is no confirmed construction date.

The FLYER bus runs to Leeds and Bradford city centres in around forty to fifty minutes for about £4. A taxi is roughly £20 from Leeds and £15 from Bradford. The airport sits about seven miles northwest of Leeds near Yeadon, and a similar distance from Bradford.

One terminal, two check-in halls

A single terminal with Hall A and Hall B. Jet2 uses Hall B, and if you are on Jet2 you should go straight there rather than joining the Hall A queue. The terminal has been through a phased redevelopment covering check-in, duty free and arrivals into 2026.

It is compact, which helps

Once you are through security the walking distances are short. The pinch point is security itself on summer weekend mornings when several aircraft depart close together.

Free drop-off

Worth knowing, because most UK airports have stopped doing this. Gatwick charges £10 for ten minutes. Leeds Bradford still has a free drop-off zone.

The 100ml rule applies

Leeds Bradford has not moved to the 2 litre liquid allowance. Neither has Manchester, which is where you are probably flying from anyway. So whichever of the two you use, pack to 100ml.

Do children have to perform Umrah?

It is not obligatory before puberty. Many families have them perform it anyway, which is fine.

What is hardest with young children?

Crowds. Each child in Ihram needs one adult whose only job is that child.

Should I pay for a closer hotel with children?

It is the single best use of the money. Under 300 metres means you can take a tired child back mid-afternoon and come out again later.

Is summer too hot for children?

It is 38 to 45 degrees. Manageable close to the Haram with Tawaf at Fajr or after midnight, harder a kilometre out.

Do you do mosque group bookings?

Yes, from five people up to fifty plus. Mosque parties, madrasah groups, ISoc trips and extended families.

Is a group cheaper per person?

On hotels usually yes, because we block-book rooms. On flights rarely, because airlines price seats individually.

Can the group travel from different towns?

Passport with at least six months validity from your travel date, a passport photo, and a meningococcal ACWY certificate for each traveller.

Do children need the vaccine too?

Yes. Book the whole family in at once rather than in stages.

Where do I get ACWY in Bradford or Leeds?

Your GP practice, or a private travel clinic. Pharmacy travel services across West Yorkshire offer it. Allow at least ten days before you fly.

Is it free on the NHS?

Often not. Many practices charge privately for the Hajj and Umrah ACWY vaccine. Ask about the cost when you book the appointment.

Tell us early. Middle names, spellings and name order all have to match, and fixing it before ticketing is free while fixing it afterwards is not.

What if a visa is refused?

Rare, and usually a document issue we can fix and resubmit. We tell you the same day.

Do I need travel insurance?

Strongly recommended, and on a family booking check whether children are covered on your policy.

Ihram and the flight

Where do I change into Ihram?

At Manchester after security, before boarding. Or on the aircraft before the Miqat is crossed.

Do I travel to the airport in Ihram?

No. Travel normally, especially if you are on a train from Leeds first.

When is the Miqat crossed?

Flying into Jeddah from the UK, roughly half an hour before landing. The crew announce it. You must be in Ihram with your intention made before that point.

What if I fly into Madinah?

You do not enter Ihram on the plane. You enter it at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, about 9 km outside Madinah on the road to Makkah.

Should I pack Ihram in my suitcase?

No, hand luggage. If your case takes a later flight you still need to enter Ihram on time.

What do women wear for Ihram?

No prescribed garment. Loose modest clothing covering everything except face and hands.

How long is the flight?

Around six and a half hours direct from Manchester to Jeddah.

In Saudi Arabia

How close will my hotel be to the Haram?

3 star is typically 700 metres to 1.2 km with a shuttle. 4 star 300 to 700 metres. 5 star 200 to 500 metres, or under 200 on the luxury tiers.

Will you tell me the hotel name before I pay?

Yes, in writing, with the distance in metres and the nearest gate.

Can I get a Kaaba view room?

How far is Jeddah airport from Makkah?

About 90 km, an hour to ninety minutes by road. Included in your package.

How do I get from Makkah to Madinah?

Included. Air conditioned coach, about four and a half hours by road.

What is the time difference?

Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two hours ahead during British Summer Time.

Do you arrange Ziyarat?

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

How do I visit the Rawdah?

Free timed permits through the Nusuk app. Nobody can sell you one. Women visit in separate sessions with fewer slots, so book early.

Can I perform Umrah more than once on one trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Can I bring Zamzam home?

Yes, checked baggage only, and only the official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters.

How much Zamzam for a family of five?

One 5 litre bottle each, so twenty five litres. That is twenty five kilos coming off the belt at Manchester before you start the drive home.

Elderly pilgrims and accessibility

Which package suits elderly parents?

A hotel under 300 metres from the Haram, 12 or 14 nights, travelling between November and February.

Is the journey to Manchester hard for an older traveller?

It is an hour and a bit before a long flight, so plan it properly. A lift is easier than the train with luggage, and an airport hotel the night before is worth considering for an early departure.

Can I book special assistance?

Yes, through the airline, ideally at least 48 hours before you fly. Tell us and we note it on the booking and remind you.

Are wheelchairs available at the Haram?

Yes, at the mosque. There are upper level Tawaf areas designed for wheelchair use where the circuit is longer but far less crowded.

Do you arrange medical support?

We cannot provide medical care. We do pick hotels near the Haram clinics, brief you on facilities, and note conditions on your booking. Bring medications with generic names written down.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It does not remove the obligation to perform Hajj itself.

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm the position for your specific travel date.
