Terminal 1 is gone. If anything says T1, it is out of date

This is the single most common source of confusion at Manchester right now and it will catch people for another year.

What happened

Terminal 1 closed to departing passengers on 19 November 2025, after more than sixty years, as part of a £1.3 billion transformation programme. Every airline that used it moved to Terminal 2, with easyJet and Emirates among the last to shift across.

The old Terminal 1 building was not demolished. Its entrance, security hall and duty free area were absorbed into an expanded Terminal 3 and officially rebranded on 5 March 2026. So if you are directed toward what your memory calls Terminal 1, you are walking into Terminal 3.

Where things are now

Terminal 2 more than doubled in size across the programme. It now has a second security hall with CT scanners, new piers with double air bridges for wide-body aircraft, and a completely rebuilt check-in hall. For Umrah passengers on Saudi and Gulf carriers, this is where you will be.

The practical instruction

Check your boarding pass, not your memory and not a guide written in 2024. If your booking confirmation still says Terminal 1, it has been reassigned and you need to confirm which one. Every itinerary we send names the terminal.

The 100ml trap at Manchester

If you read one section on this page, make it this one. It costs people money every single week.

Manchester still runs the 100ml rule

Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol have all moved to a 2 litre liquid allowance. Manchester has not. Every liquid, gel, paste and aerosol in your hand luggage must be in a container of 100ml or less, and this applies in both terminals.

The odd part is that Manchester has the technology. CT scanners are installed across all security lanes. What the airport does not have yet is Department for Transport approval to lift the limit, and each airport needs that separately. Scanners capable, approval pending.

What has changed at Manchester security

Two things, and they are genuinely better. You no longer need the clear plastic bag, and liquids can stay inside your hand luggage through the scanner. Laptops and tablets stay in the bag too.

So the ritual is gone. The limit is not.

Why this hits Umrah travellers specifically

Because a lot of pilgrims fly out from Manchester and come home through Jeddah, or fly out from Heathrow one year and Manchester the next, and assume the rules travel with them. They do not. The rule that applies is the rule at whichever airport you are standing in.

And there is an Ihram angle. People buy unscented soap and shampoo for Ihram, decant it into travel bottles, and lose it at Manchester security.

The travel bottle detail almost nobody knows

If you use your own refillable travel bottles, the container must have its capacity printed on it by the manufacturer. A handwritten label saying 100ml will not pass, and security will take it regardless of how much liquid is actually inside.

Buy proper travel bottles with the size moulded in, or buy small unscented soap in the UK before you travel. Either works. Guessing does not.

What to do

Put anything over 100ml in the hold bag. Keep medication in your hand luggage with the prescription or pharmacy label, because medicines are exempt from the volume cap, but you should declare them before screening rather than after.

Parking, drop-off and the penalty nobody warns you about

The car parks were renumbered

From 5 March 2026 every Manchester Airport car park moved to a numbered P1 to P16 system. If you have a booking confirmation or a memory of a named car park, check the new number before you set off.

Barrierless parking and the £100 notice

Several Manchester Airport car parks and forecourts now run barrierless. No barrier, no ticket, no payment machine on the way out. Cameras read your plate and you pay online afterwards.

If you do not pay by midnight the following day, a Parking Charge Notice is issued at £100, reduced to £60 if you settle within fourteen days. Plenty of people find out weeks later when the letter arrives.

This applies at forecourt drop-off points as well as car parks. So the uncle who drops you at the terminal and drives off is the one who ends up with the notice, and he will not know to look for it.

Tell whoever is dropping you off

Genuinely. Send them a message with the payment instruction before they leave the house. It is the single cheapest piece of advice on this page.

Long stay on a 14 night trip

Two weeks of parking is a real cost and it is worth pricing against the train, the tram or a lift. On a family booking it can be the difference between three people going and four.

Getting to Manchester Airport

The Station

Manchester Airport has its own train, tram and bus interchange, called The Station, connected to Terminal 2 by the Skylink, an enclosed elevated walkway with travelators. From The Station, signposted routes take you through to Terminal 3.

Train

Direct trains reach Manchester city centre in around twenty minutes, and there are through services from across the North without changing in Manchester. For anyone coming from Bolton, Preston, Blackburn or further, the train often beats driving once you account for parking.

Metrolink

The tram runs to the airport from the city centre. Slower than the train and cheaper, and it works well if you are travelling light. Less well with four suitcases.

Driving

Straight off the M56, which links to the M60 ring road, so most of Greater Manchester and Lancashire is a direct motorway run. From Cheetham Hill it is about twelve miles.

How early should I arrive?

Three hours for a Jeddah or Madinah flight.

Not because Manchester is slow, but because Umrah flights are heavy-baggage flights. Families check in four or five cases each, nearly all of them close to the weight limit, and half of them get repacked at the desk. The queue behaves nothing like a Malaga flight queue. In Ramadan season, three hours is the floor rather than the target.

Prayer facilities at Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport provides multi-faith prayer rooms for passengers and staff.

Here is where we are going to be honest rather than precise. The terminal layout changed substantially through 2025 and 2026. Terminal 1 closed, Terminal 2 more than doubled, and Terminal 3 gained a new entrance and security hall in March. Facility locations moved with all of that, and any guide quoting an exact gate number from before those changes is unreliable.

So the sensible instruction is to check the airport’s own terminal map on the day, or ask at an information desk once you are through security. It takes a minute and it will be right.

What to expect on wudu

As at most UK airports, dedicated ablution provision is limited. Many travellers use the accessible washrooms nearby or perform tayammum. A small towel in your hand luggage solves most of the problem and weighs nothing.

Praying before you leave

Worth remembering that Cheetham Hill, Longsight, Rusholme and Whalley Range all have mosques within easy reach of the motorway routes to the airport. For an early flight, plenty of families pray Fajr locally and then drive down, rather than trying to sort it out airside.

Coming home into Manchester

Everyone plans the outbound leg and nobody plans the arrival. Four things worth knowing.

The Zamzam problem is a weight problem

You are allowed one factory-sealed 5 litre Zamzam container per passenger, bought at the official counters in the Saudi airport. A family of four therefore lands at Manchester with twenty litres of water on the belt, which is twenty kilos.

That is fine until you are pushing it, four suitcases and a tired child from baggage reclaim to a car park that is now called P9 and is not where you remember it. Bring a pound coin for a trolley and think the walk through before you land.

Sealed duty free bags stay sealed

If you buy liquids in Jeddah or Madinah duty free and you have a connection anywhere, they come in a sealed tamper-evident bag with the receipt visible inside. Do not open it. Opened, it becomes a normal liquid and the 100ml rule applies at your connecting airport. This catches people who want a drink of their new Zamzam on the plane.

Pay the parking before you go to bed

If you left a car in a barrierless car park, the clock started when you drove in and it does not care that you have been away for two weeks and landed at 5am. Pay it the day you get back rather than the day you unpack.

Nobody is at their best at 5am

Most Jeddah services land into Manchester early. If you have elderly parents with you, arrange the lift properly rather than assuming you will sort a taxi out on the day. A pre-booked pick-up at 5am is a very different experience to standing on the forecourt with twenty kilos of Zamzam.

Yes, meningococcal ACWY is mandatory. No certificate, no visa.

Where do I get the ACWY vaccine in Manchester?

How long is the certificate valid?

Generally several years. Keep it, it saves you the whole process next time.

3 star is typically 700 metres to 1.2 km with a shuttle. 4 star 300 to 700 metres. 5 star 200 to 500 metres, or under 200 on the luxury tiers.

Will you tell me the hotel name before I pay?

Yes, in writing, with the distance in metres and the nearest gate.

What if the hotel is not confirmed yet?

Can I get a Kaaba view room?

How far is Jeddah airport from Makkah?

About 90 km, an hour to ninety minutes by road. Included in your package.

Is there a train from Jeddah airport?

Yes, the Haramain High-Speed Railway has a station in the Jeddah Terminal 1 complex, running to Makkah and Madinah.

How do I get from Makkah to Madinah?

Included. Air conditioned coach, about four and a half hours by road.

What is the time difference?

Saudi Arabia is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two hours ahead during British Summer Time.

Do you arrange Ziyarat?

Yes, in both cities. Makkah covers Jabal al-Noor, Jabal Thawr, Mina and Arafat. Madinah covers Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Uhud and the Seven Mosques.

How do I visit the Rawdah?

Free timed permits through the Nusuk app. Nobody can sell you one. Women visit in separate sessions with fewer slots, so book early.

Can I perform Umrah twice on one trip?

Yes. Return to the nearest Miqat, most people use Masjid Aisha at Taneem, re-enter Ihram and come back.

Can I bring Zamzam water home?

Yes, in checked baggage only, and only the official factory-sealed 5 litre bottle bought at the Saudi airport counters. Shop-bought Zamzam gets refused at check-in.

Ihram

Where do I change into Ihram at Manchester?

After security, before boarding. Or on the aircraft before the Miqat is crossed.

Do I travel to the airport in Ihram?

No. Travel normally and change at the airport.

When is the Miqat crossed?

Flying into Jeddah from the UK, roughly half an hour before landing. The crew announce it. You must have entered Ihram and made your intention before that point.

What if I fly into Madinah first?

You do not enter Ihram on the plane. You enter it at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, about 9 km outside Madinah on the Makkah road. Your coach stops there.

Should I pack Ihram in my suitcase?

No, hand luggage. If your case takes a later flight you still need to enter Ihram on time.

What do women wear for Ihram?

No prescribed garment. Loose modest clothing covering everything except face and hands. Comfortable shoes matter more than people expect.

Families, elderly pilgrims and groups

A hotel under 300 metres from the Haram, 12 or 14 nights, travelling between November and February. And fly direct if you can.

Plenty of families manage it. Each child in Ihram needs one adult whose only job is that child.

Do children have to perform Umrah?

It is not obligatory before puberty. Many families have them perform it anyway, which is fine.

Can we get connecting rooms?

Ramadan and timing

Is Umrah in Ramadan equal to Hajj?

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It does not remove the obligation to perform Hajj itself.

When is Ramadan 2027?

Around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting.

How much more does Ramadan cost?

40 to 70 per cent above off-peak, and more again for the last ten nights.

When should I book for the last ten nights?

As early as you can. Rooms near the Haram for that window sell out earlier than any other date in the year.

Is Manchester Airport busier in Ramadan?

The Jeddah and Madinah desks certainly are. Three hours becomes a minimum rather than a comfortable margin.

Best month if I cannot go in Ramadan?

October or November. Mild weather, low crowds, lowest prices.

Is August a bad time?

It is 38 to 45 degrees in Makkah and Manchester is at its busiest. If school holidays are your only window, book close to the Haram and do Tawaf at Fajr or after midnight.

Can women travel without a Mahram?

Under current Saudi rules, women aged 18 and over may perform Umrah as part of an organised group without a Mahram. Confirm the position for your specific travel date.

Can I change my dates after booking?

Usually, subject to airline and hotel rules. Tell us early, because change costs rise sharply near departure.

What if my flight is cancelled?

Message your agent. Everything is on one ticket, so the airline reroutes you and we rearrange the ground side around it.
