SWANSEA — HOME OF THE LARGEST MOSQUE IN WALES AND A POET WHO WROTE FOR ETERNITY: Swansea Mosque on St Helens Road (SA1) is the largest mosque in Wales, serving approximately 10,000 Muslims from South and West Wales. The new Sketty Mosque opened in March 2023 — the second-largest mosque in Swansea. Dylan Thomas — born 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, Uplands, Swansea, 1914 — wrote ‘Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night’ in the city where the Muslim community now makes its home. No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Swansea. This is the first.
Swansea is the second city of Wales — a city of approximately 250,000 people in the county of Swansea (Abertawe in Welsh), situated on Swansea Bay at the mouth of the River Tawe, approximately 40 miles west of Cardiff. Wales’s second-largest city and administrative capital of the Swansea Bay City Region, Swansea has a distinctive character shaped by its industrial heritage (copper smelting, zinc and tinplate production), its maritime position on the south Wales coast, and the extraordinary natural beauty of the Gower Peninsula — the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designated anywhere in the United Kingdom, in 1956 — which extends westward from the city.
Swansea’s most globally famous resident was Dylan Marlais Thomas (1914–1953) — the poet, short story writer, and broadcaster whose work includes ‘Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night,’ ‘And Death Shall Have No Dominion,’ ‘Fern Hill,’ and ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales.’ Thomas was born at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in the Uplands area of Swansea — approximately 1.5 miles from the city centre — on 27 October 1914. The Dylan Thomas Birthplace at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive is now a heritage house open to visitors. The Dylan Thomas Centre in the SA1 waterfront development celebrates his work and life. Swansea’s identity is inseparable from Thomas’s voice.
Swansea’s Muslim community is Wales’s second largest, after Cardiff — Pakistani and Bangladeshi families who came to the city from the 1960s onward, and a significant international student population from Swansea University’s two campuses. The community is served by Swansea Mosque & Islamic Community Centre at 14–15 St Helens Road, Swansea SA1 4AW — described as ‘the largest mosque in Wales, serving around 10,000 Muslims from South and West Wales.’ The Sketty Mosque & Community Centre, which opened in March 2023 as ‘the newest and second-largest mosque in the City & County of Swansea,’ serves the western areas of the city under the Welsh Islamic Cultural Association Swansea (WICAS).
No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Swansea. Wales’s second city, home to the largest mosque in Wales, the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, and the gateway to the Gower Peninsula — has been entirely invisible to the Umrah market. This is the first dedicated Swansea Umrah page.
Packages Umrah is operated by Uraan Travel Ltd (7 Huxley Avenue, Manchester M8 0SJ). We arrange all-inclusive Umrah packages for Swansea and South and West Wales. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335 or visit packagesumrah.co.uk.
Dylan Thomas was born on 27 October 1914 at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, Uplands, Swansea — a semi-detached Victorian terrace in the residential Uplands area above the city centre. His father was a grammar school English teacher; his mother a seamstress. Thomas grew up in Swansea, attended Swansea Grammar School on Mount Pleasant, and began writing poetry as a teenager with a precociousness that would lead to his first collection (18 Poems, 1934) being published when he was just 20 years old.
Thomas’s relationship with Swansea was passionate and ambivalent — he described it as ‘this hilly town… half a man’s age’ and called Swansea Bay ‘the bay of my dreams.’ He left Swansea for London as a young poet but returned repeatedly throughout his life. The poem ‘Fern Hill’ evokes the Welsh rural landscape of his childhood. ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ (1950) is perhaps the most widely read Christmas prose poem in the English language. But his most famous poem — ‘Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night’ (1947) — is a villanelle addressed to his dying father, urging him not to accept death passively: ‘Rage, rage against the dying of the light.’
Thomas died in New York on 9 November 1953, aged 39, following a period of heavy drinking. He was buried in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire — the small Welsh town on the Taf estuary where he spent some of his most productive years and where he wrote in the Boathouse. The Dylan Thomas Birthplace at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive is now a heritage property open to visitors and for short-term stays. The Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea’s SA1 Maritime Quarter hosts exhibitions, the Dylan Thomas Literary Prize, and events connecting Swansea to the poet’s global legacy.
Dylan Thomas and Umrah: ‘Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night’ is a poem about refusing passive acceptance of the end — about the human determination to press forward, to resist, to make the journey rather than remain still. Umrah is one of Islam’s most active expressions of the same determination: the refusal to remain in place when the House of Allah can be reached. Swansea — the city whose poet told the world to rage against the dying of the light — is also the city whose Muslim community aspires to the greatest journey their faith requires. Both traditions understand that remaining still is not an option.
The Gower Peninsula — extending approximately 19 miles westward from Swansea into the Bristol Channel — was designated the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) anywhere in the United Kingdom in 1956. The peninsula contains some of Wales’s most spectacular coastal scenery: Rhossili Bay (consistently rated one of the UK’s finest beaches), the Three Cliffs Bay, Oxwich Bay, Pennard Castle, and the dramatic limestone headlands of the south Gower coast. The peninsula is accessible from Swansea by car in approximately 20–40 minutes depending on destination.
The Gower Peninsula’s natural beauty has been part of Swansea’s civic identity for over a century — the seaside at Langland and Caswell were accessible to Swansea’s working-class families by tram from the early 20th century. Dylan Thomas wrote of the Gower bays. Swansea’s Muslim families walk the same Gower beaches that Thomas described, making their home in a city whose natural setting is as extraordinary as any in the United Kingdom.
Swansea City Mosque & Islamic Community Centre at 14–15 St Helens Road, Swansea SA1 4AW (and 160 St Helen’s Road SA1 4DQ) is the largest mosque in Wales — ‘serving around 10,000 Muslims from South and West Wales.’ The mosque has served Swansea’s Muslim community since the 1980s, operating from two former terraced commercial buildings on St Helen’s Road. A significant redevelopment project is underway: the conversion of St Andrew’s Church — founded 1862, built 1864 by Scottish immigrants working in the drapery trade, designed by architect John Dickson with decorative twin towers, formerly a Presbyterian then United Reformed Church — into a new mosque building. Kafel Fund UK purchased the church building in 1997; restoration and renovation plans commenced in 2004 following the merger of the charity with the mosque. The new building will significantly expand the mosque’s capacity for Swansea’s growing Muslim community.
Sketty Mosque & Community Centre — the newest and second-largest mosque in the City & County of Swansea — opened in March 2023 under the Welsh Islamic Cultural Association Swansea (WICAS). The purpose-built facility features a dedicated prayer hall for men, a multipurpose hall, a dedicated prayer and community hall for women, a kitchen, a meeting room, and flexible partition walls creating four classrooms. The exterior features an Ionic Dome. WICAS describes the mosque as ‘a beacon of unity, tolerance, and shared values, contributing to the rich tapestry of Swansea’s cultural diversity’ — its management team comprising ‘highly educated and professional individuals’ committed to ‘uniting diverse communities and collaborating for the common good.’ The mosque extends beyond the Muslim community to engage with wider Swansea society.
Swansea’s airport situation is one of the most interesting in our Welsh portfolio. Cardiff Airport (CWL, 35 miles east via M4) is the nearest airport — but has very limited Umrah provision in 2027. Bristol Airport (BRS, 55 miles east via M4) has better Umrah charter provision. Both are assessed for every Swansea booking, with the choice depending on which has better pricing and scheduling for the specific dates. For 4★/5★ and Ramadan bookings, London Heathrow (LHR, ~185 miles east via M4) is checked for Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah.

Dylan Thomas told his dying father not to go gently. He told the world to rage against the dying of the light — to press forward, to insist on the journey, to refuse the passive waiting of those who simply endure what comes. He wrote it in the city where the largest mosque in Wales now stands on St Helens Road — where 10,000 Muslims from South and West Wales gather for prayer and for the aspiration to perform Umrah.
Swansea Mosque’s congregation aspires to Makkah with exactly the quality of active determination that Thomas’s poem demands. The aspiration to Umrah — held over years, planned for, saved toward, finally organised into an airport journey and a flight and a visa and a hotel — is the refusal to remain still when the Haram can be reached. ‘Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night’ is a poem about departure. Umrah is the journey the Muslim soul makes in response to the same call: go. Do not stay. The House of Allah is reachable. Go.

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.
Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”
The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.
Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.
Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
