More Than Just Umrah Packages

Umrah Packages from Newport Wales 2027 — All-Inclusive from £645/pp | Chartist Uprising City, Transporter Bridge, 10 Mosques — Bristol Airport Just 30 Miles via M4

QUICK ANSWER: Packages Umrah arranges all-inclusive Umrah packages for Newport Wales pilgrims from £645/pp for 7 nights (3-star, off-peak months). Bristol Airport (BRS) is approximately 28–32 miles east via M4/Second Severn Crossing — approximately 30–40 minutes by car; 26–34 minutes pre-dawn at 2–3am. BRS is Newport’s primary Umrah airport — Umrah charter packages and Jeddah flights available. London Heathrow (LHR, ~130–135 miles east via M4) for Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah on premium 4★/5★ bookings, or by train from Newport station. £99 deposit. ATOL protected. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335.

NEWPORT’S M4 POSITION — BRISTOL AIRPORT 30 MINUTES, HEATHROW 2 HOURS: Newport’s M4 location makes Bristol Airport (BRS) one of the closest major airports to any Welsh Muslim community. Just 28–32 miles east via the M4 and Second Severn Crossing, Bristol Airport is approximately 26–34 minutes pre-dawn from Newport’s mosques. Newport is better positioned for Umrah departure than Cardiff, than Swansea, than most of Wales. Yet no Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Newport. The city of the Chartist uprising, the Transporter Bridge, and 10 mosques — this is the first.

Newport is a city in south Wales — a unitary authority of approximately 160,000 people, situated on the River Usk, approximately 12 miles east of Cardiff and 14 miles west of Bristol via the M4 motorway and the Second Severn Crossing. Newport sits at the eastern gateway of Wales: the last Welsh city on the M4 before the Severn estuary and England. It is the third largest city in Wales by population, after Cardiff and Swansea.

Newport’s character was formed in the 19th century by the ironworks and tinplate industries of the Gwent valleys, and by its role as a port for the export of coal and iron from the South Wales coalfield. The Newport Docks — still active as a commercial port on the River Usk — handled the produce of the valley industries for over a century. The city’s industrial heritage is carried in its architecture, its street plan, and its specific institutional traditions — including the Newport Chartist Uprising of November 1839, when approximately 5,000 Chartist workers marched from the Gwent valleys into Newport in the largest armed uprising in British history since the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

Newport’s Muslim community — one of Wales’s largest, second in size only to Cardiff’s — is predominantly Pakistani (concentrated in the NP20 central and Stow Hill areas) and Bangladeshi (concentrated in the Maindee area of NP19, around Corporation Road and Hereford Street). With approximately 12,000–17,000 Muslims — approximately 10–13% of the city’s population — Newport has one of the highest Muslim percentages of any Welsh city. The community is served by at least ten mosques, including the Jamia Mosque at 183–186 Commercial Road, the Islamic Society of Wales at Victoria Road, the Newport Islamic Society for Gwent at 63–65 Stow Hill, the Iqra Masjid & Community Centre at 276 Corporation Road, Masjid At-Taqwa at 18 Alexandra Road, and the Ummah Community Centre and Mosque at 14 Duckpool Road.

No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Newport. The largest Muslim community in Wales outside Cardiff, with ten mosques and the M4’s best Umrah airport access of any Welsh city, has been entirely invisible to the Umrah market. This is the first dedicated Newport Umrah page.

Packages Umrah is operated by Uraan Travel Ltd (7 Huxley Avenue, Manchester M8 0SJ). We arrange all-inclusive Umrah packages for Newport and all of Gwent. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335 or visit packagesumrah.co.uk.

The Newport Chartist Uprising — 4 November 1839, Wales’s Last Armed Rising

On the night of 3–4 November 1839, approximately 5,000 Chartist workers — men from the iron and coal valleys of Gwent, carrying pikes, muskets, and homemade weapons — marched through rain and darkness from Blackwood, Risca, and Pontypool, converging on Newport at dawn. The Chartists — members of the national working-class movement demanding universal male suffrage, annual parliaments, and the secret ballot — had planned to seize Newport and trigger a national uprising. They marched to the Westgate Hotel on Commercial Street, where troops of the 45th Regiment of Foot were billeted and where Chartist prisoners were held.

The confrontation lasted approximately 30 minutes. The troops fired from behind the hotel shutters. Between 22 and 28 Chartists were killed — the precise number remains disputed — and hundreds were wounded or fled. The leaders — John Frost, Zephaniah Williams, and William Jones — were tried for high treason and sentenced to death, commuted to transportation to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania). The Newport Rising was the last large-scale armed uprising in British history.

The Chartists’ demands — universal suffrage, secret ballot, annual parliaments — are now the unremarkable standard of British democracy. They marched and died for rights that every British citizen, including Newport’s Muslim community, now exercises as a matter of course. The bronze Chartist Mural in Newport city centre commemorates the uprising. The Westgate Hotel — rebuilt on the original site on Commercial Street — retains the original shuttered windows through which the troops fired.

The Chartist uprising and Newport’s Muslim community: the Chartists marched in 1839 for the right of working men to participate in the democracy of their country. Newport’s Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim families, who came to the city in the post-war period to work in its manufacturing and service industries, exercise the franchise the Chartists died for. They vote. They stand for council. They build mosques on Commercial Road and Stow Hill. They aspire to perform Umrah as British Muslims — citizens of the democracy the Newport Chartists helped create.

Newport Transporter Bridge — 1906, Grade I Listed, One of Eight in the World

The Newport Transporter Bridge — spanning the River Usk approximately 800 metres south of Newport city centre — was built between 1902 and 1906 and is one of only eight surviving transporter bridges in the world. A transporter bridge does not carry traffic across a gap by means of a road deck at the crossing level; instead, a gondola (a suspended platform that can carry vehicles and pedestrians) is carried by a moving trolley that travels across the high-level bridge structure. The Newport Transporter Bridge’s gondola can carry vehicles and pedestrians across the Usk in approximately 90 seconds.

The bridge is a Grade I listed structure — the highest level of heritage protection in England and Wales — and is operated by Newport City Council. At 54 metres high and 196 metres long, it is one of the larger surviving transporter bridges and one of the most significant industrial engineering monuments in Wales. The bridge was designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin, who designed several of the other surviving transporter bridges in France and Spain. Newport’s transporter bridge is the only surviving example of its type in Wales and one of only two in England and Wales (the other is at Middlesbrough).

Newport to Bristol Airport — M4 East, 30 Miles, Pre-Dawn 26–34 Minutes

The M4 motorway — which passes through Newport, with Junction 24 (eastern Newport) and Junction 26 (central Newport/M48 junction) as the primary access points — runs directly east from Newport toward Bristol and Heathrow. Bristol Airport (BRS) is reached from the M4 by taking Junction 21 (south via M5) or by continuing east on the M4 to the A370 south. The entire Newport-to-BRS journey is essentially motorway — the M4 east, Second Severn Crossing (or M48 Second Severn route), M5 south, Junction 22. Newport has one of the best motorway connections to Bristol Airport of any Welsh city.

Bristol Airport (BRS) — Newport’s Primary Umrah Airport, 28–32 Miles East

Detail

Bristol Airport (BRS) for Newport Wales Pilgrims

Distance from Newport city centre

~28–32 miles east via M4/M5 or M4/A38

From Newport mosques (Commercial Road, Stow Hill, Corporation Road)

~28–32 miles east — M4 Junction 26 or 24 → M4 east → Second Severn Crossing → M5 south → Junction 22 → A38 north → Bristol Airport

Alternative route

M4 east → M4/M48 junction → M48 south → Second Severn Crossing → M5 south → Junction 22 → BRS. Or A48/M4 east → M5 → BRS.

Drive time (off-peak, normal traffic)

30–42 minutes. M4 Second Severn section can be variable.

Drive time at 2–3am (pre-dawn)

26–34 minutes — M4, Second Severn Crossing, and M5 completely clear at pre-dawn. One of the fastest Welsh city-to-Umrah-airport journeys in our portfolio.

Umrah provision

Good Umrah charter packages from BRS. Jeddah flight options available. Checked for all Newport 3★ bookings.

Taxi from Newport to BRS

Approximately £38–55 — among the most affordable Welsh city Umrah airport transfers

Toll on Second Severn Crossing

The Second Severn Crossing (M4) has been toll-free since November 2018. No charge for Newport-to-BRS journeys.

Second Severn Crossing — toll-free since 2018: The Second Severn Crossing (M4) connecting Wales to England was toll-free from November 2018, when the Welsh Government removed the charge. Newport pilgrims driving to Bristol Airport via the M4 and Second Severn Crossing pay no toll. This was a significant positive change for Newport’s Muslim community — Bristol Airport became even more accessible when the crossing charge was removed.

Cardiff Airport (CWL) — 20 Miles West, Honest Assessment

Detail

Cardiff Airport (CWL) — Honest Assessment

Distance from Newport

~20–22 miles west via M4/A48/A4226

Drive time

~25–35 minutes

Umrah provision

VERY LIMITED. Cardiff Airport has no Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah and very limited Umrah charter provision in 2027. Despite being closer than BRS, CWL is not currently a viable Umrah airport.

Verdict

Closer than BRS (20 miles vs 28 miles) but not viable for Umrah 2027. Bristol (BRS, 30 miles) is the correct Newport Umrah airport.

Why not Cardiff Airport? Cardiff Airport (CWL) is only 20 miles from Newport — significantly closer than Bristol Airport (BRS, 28 miles). However, Cardiff Airport has no Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah and no meaningful Umrah charter provision in 2027. Bristol Airport (BRS), despite being 8 miles further, is Newport’s correct Umrah airport. When Cardiff Airport’s Umrah provision improves, we will update this assessment.

Our Newport recommendation: Bristol Airport (BRS, 28–32 miles east via M4, 26–34 minutes pre-dawn — toll-free) for all 3★ charter packages. London Heathrow (LHR, 130 miles east via M4 or Newport station train ~2h 15m) for 4★/5★ and Ramadan Umrah with Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah. Cardiff Airport (CWL, 20 miles west) is NOT recommended due to very limited Umrah provision in 2027.

Newport’s Muslim Community — Ten Mosques, Two Communities, One Gwent City

Newport’s Muslim community divides broadly into two main geographic and ethnic concentrations: the Pakistani community, concentrated in the NP20 postcode areas around Stow Hill, Commercial Road, and the city centre, served primarily by the Jamia Mosque (183–186 Commercial Road NP20 2PP), the Newport Islamic Society for Gwent (63–65 Stow Hill NP20 4DU), the Islamic Society of Wales (Victoria Road NP20 4EQ), and Masjid At-Taqwa (18 Alexandra Road NP20 2GY); and the Bangladeshi community, concentrated in the Maindee area of NP19 around Corporation Road and Hereford Street, served primarily by the Iqra Masjid & Community Centre (276 Corporation Road NP19 0DZ), the Shahporan Jame Mosque (51–52 Hereford Street NP19 8DT), and the Ummah Community Centre and Mosque (14 Duckpool Road NP19 8FH).

Jamia Mosque Newport — 183–186 Commercial Road, NP20 2PP

The Jamia Mosque at 183–186 Commercial Road, Newport NP20 2PP is Newport’s most visited mosque listing — the primary Sunni mosque serving the Pakistani community in the NP20 central area. Commercial Road is one of Newport’s main arterial roads, connecting the city centre to the western residential areas. The mosque is approximately 2 miles from the M4 Junction 26.

Islamic Society of Wales — Victoria Road, NP20 4EQ

The Islamic Society of Wales at Victoria Road, Newport NP20 4EQ occupies a former United Reformed Church — a significant building whose conversion from a nonconformist Christian congregation to a Muslim community space reflects the broader pattern of religious community succession in post-industrial Welsh towns. The Islamic Society of Wales serves the wider Newport and Gwent Muslim community and represents the community at a regional and national level.

Iqra Masjid & Community Centre — 276 Corporation Road, NP19 0DZ

Established in 2014, the Iqra Masjid & Community Centre at 276 Corporation Road, Newport NP19 0DZ serves the Bangladeshi Muslim community of the Maindee area. The centre provides daily prayers, Friday Jumu’ah with additional lessons, educational programmes for youth and children (including sports programmes and Islamic studies classes), and community activities including special events during Ramadan. Women’s prayer area provided.

Ummah Community Centre and Mosque — 14 Duckpool Road, NP19 8FH

The Ummah Community Centre and Mosque at 14 Duckpool Road, Newport NP19 8FH describes its mission as ‘to promote belonging, spirituality, and education, providing a nurturing environment for individuals and families to practice their faith and engage in community activities.’ The centre is ‘open to everyone, regardless of background or belief’ — an outward-facing institution that serves both the Muslim community and the broader Newport public.

Newport’s Maindee — Wales’s Most Significant Bangladeshi Community

The Maindee area of Newport — centred on Maindee Square and the streets around Corporation Road, Hereford Street, and Chepstow Road — is the primary settlement area for Newport’s Bangladeshi Muslim community and has been described as one of the most concentrated Bangladeshi communities in Wales. The area’s restaurants, shops, and community institutions reflect a deeply rooted Bangladeshi presence that goes back to the 1970s and 1980s. The Shahporan Jame Mosque on Hereford Street and the Iqra Masjid on Corporation Road both serve this community.

Frequently Asked Questions — Umrah Packages from Newport Wales 2027

Airport Questions

Which airport do Newport pilgrims use for Umrah?

Bristol Airport (BRS, ~28–32 miles east via M4, ~26–34 min pre-dawn, toll-free M4) for 3★ charter packages. London Heathrow (LHR, ~130 miles east via M4, Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah) for 4★/5★ and Ramadan — by M4 (~1h 45m pre-dawn) or Newport station train (~2h 15m total). Cardiff Airport (CWL, 20 miles west) is NOT recommended — very limited Umrah provision in 2027.

How far is Bristol Airport from Newport Wales?

Approximately 28–32 miles east via M4/Second Severn Crossing/M5 — approximately 30–42 minutes off-peak; 26–34 minutes at 2–3am pre-dawn. The Second Severn Crossing (M4) has been toll-free since November 2018.

Why not use Cardiff Airport for Newport Umrah?

Cardiff Airport (CWL) is approximately 20 miles from Newport — closer than BRS (28 miles). However, Cardiff Airport has no Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah and very limited Umrah charter provision in 2027. Bristol Airport (BRS), despite being further, is Newport’s correct Umrah airport.

Is the Severn Crossing toll-free for Newport pilgrims going to Bristol Airport?

Yes — the Second Severn Crossing (M4) has been toll-free since November 2018 when the Welsh Government removed the charge. Newport pilgrims driving to BRS via the M4 pay no toll.

Is there a train from Newport to Heathrow Airport?

Yes — Newport station → London Paddington (~1h 45m–2h on GWR Great Western Main Line) → Elizabeth Line Paddington → Heathrow (~30 min). Total approximately 2h 15m–2h 30m. Practical for 4★/5★ and Ramadan Umrah where Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah from LHR is preferred.

What time should I leave Newport for a 6am BRS flight?

Leave Commercial Road or Stow Hill at approximately 4:00–4:10am. M4 Junction 26 east, toll-free Second Severn, M5 south, Junction 22, A38 north to BRS — approximately 26–30 minutes pre-dawn.

How much is a taxi from Newport to Bristol Airport?

Approximately £38–55 — among the most affordable major Welsh city Umrah airport transfers in our portfolio given the short 28-32 mile M4 journey.

What was the Newport Chartist Uprising?

On 4 November 1839, approximately 5,000 Chartist workers marched into Newport demanding democratic rights (universal male suffrage, secret ballot, annual parliaments). What is the Newport Transporter Bridge?

The Newport Transporter Bridge (1906) is one of only eight surviving transporter bridges in the world and one of only two in England and Wales (the other is at Middlesbrough). Grade I listed. 54 metres high, 196 metres long. Spans the River Usk. A gondola carries vehicles and pedestrians across in approximately 90 seconds. Designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin.

Book Your Newport Umrah — From the Chartist City to the House of Allah

In the early hours of 4 November 1839, approximately 5,000 men walked through rain and darkness toward Newport, carrying whatever weapons they could find, driven by the conviction that the democratic rights they were demanding were worth the risk of their lives. They came from Blackwood and Risca and Pontypool. They walked through the night. They marched into Newport at dawn. Between 22 and 28 of them were killed at the Westgate Hotel. Their leaders were sentenced to death and transported to the other side of the world. And the rights they died for — universal suffrage, the secret ballot — became the unremarkable standard of British democracy within a generation.

Newport’s Muslim community exercises those rights. They vote. They stand for council. They built ten mosques on Commercial Road and Stow Hill and Corporation Road and Duckpool Road. And they aspire to perform Umrah — to make the journey from their Gwent city to the house of Allah that the Qibla from Newport’s mosques points toward across the Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula. The M4 east from Junction 26 is 28 miles of toll-free motorway to Bristol Airport. The Second Severn Crossing is free. The pre-dawn M4 from Newport to BRS takes 26 minutes. From BRS, the journey to Makkah begins.

Leave Commercial Road at 4:00am: M4 east, Junction 26, the Second Severn Crossing broad and dark above the Severn estuary, M5 south, Junction 22, A38 north, Bristol Airport terminal, 26 minutes. Saudi Airlines direct to Jeddah. Six hours thirty minutes. Makkah. From £645/pp all-inclusive. £99 deposit. Named hotel before deposit. ATOL Certificate at booking. Same-day quotes for Newport, Cwmbran, Caerleon, Pontypool, Blaenavon, Abergavenny, and all Gwent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is Umrah and who can perform it?

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.

Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”

The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.

Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.

Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
