More Than Just Umrah Packages

Umrah Packages from Exeter 2027 — All-Inclusive from £645/pp | Devon’s Cathedral City — Exeter Mosque (New 2020, £1.7m), Roman Heritage, Jurassic Coast, Bristol Airport 70 Miles

QUICK ANSWER: Packages Umrah arranges all-inclusive Umrah packages for Exeter pilgrims from £645/pp for 7 nights (3-star, off-peak months). Bristol Airport (BRS) is approximately 70–75 miles north via M5 — approximately 75–88 minutes pre-dawn. BRS is Exeter’s primary Umrah airport — Saudi Airlines operates Jeddah from BRS on certain dates, with Umrah charter packages available. London Heathrow (LHR, ~165 miles east via M5/M4) for Saudi direct Jeddah on premium 4★/5★ bookings. GWR train: Exeter St David’s → Paddington (~2h) → Elizabeth Line → LHR (~30 min) = ~2.5 hrs total. £99 deposit. ATOL protected. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335.

EXETER’S NEW MOSQUE 2020 — £1.7M PURPOSE-BUILT FOR DEVON’S MUSLIM COMMUNITY: Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre opened its purpose-built building in 2020 after three years of construction costing approximately £1.7 million. From 17 people at the first meeting in the mid-1970s, Exeter’s Muslim community built one of the Southwest’s most significant new mosque buildings. The community’s origin story — university students hiring a university hall for Friday prayers, then purchasing 15 York Road in 1976 — and its 2020 completion represent five decades of Muslim community building in England’s most westerly cathedral city. No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Exeter. This is the first.

Exeter is the county town of Devon — England’s third largest county by area — and a cathedral city of approximately 130,000 people situated in the valley of the River Exe, approximately 45 miles northeast of Plymouth, 70 miles north of Bristol via the M5, and approximately 165 miles west of London. Exeter is one of England’s oldest continuously occupied cities — the Romans established Isca Dumnoniorum here as one of their primary legionary fortresses in the conquest of southwest Britain, beginning in approximately 55 AD. The Roman walls, portions of which survive in the modern city, enclose a remarkable concentration of medieval and Georgian architecture within the historic city boundaries.

Exeter Cathedral — the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter — dominates the city centre from its elevated position above Cathedral Green. Founded in 1050 as a Benedictine monastery, the current cathedral building dates primarily from the 13th and 14th centuries. Exeter Cathedral possesses what has been described as the longest uninterrupted Gothic stone vault in the world: the nave and quire vaulting extends approximately 96 metres without any structural break — a continuous Gothic ceiling of extraordinary ambition and beauty. The West Front screen of Exeter Cathedral — over 300 carved stone figures across the façade — is one of the most magnificent examples of English medieval stone sculpture.

The Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre at 12-15 York Road, Exeter EX4 6PG is Devon’s primary mosque — serving one of England’s most westerly established Muslim communities. Its founding story is remarkable: beginning in the mid-1970s with university students hiring a university hall for Friday prayers, first meeting of 17 people, then purchasing 15 York Road in 1976, then expanding to neighbouring properties as the congregation grew, and culminating in the opening of the purpose-built mosque in 2020 — a three-year construction project costing approximately £1.7 million, funded by the Exeter Muslim community. Charity number 1212277.

No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Exeter. Devon’s cathedral city, with its magnificent Gothic cathedral, its Roman walls, its Jurassic Coast nearby, and its purpose-built 2020 mosque, has been entirely invisible to the Umrah market. This is the first dedicated Exeter Umrah page.

Packages Umrah is operated by Uraan Travel Ltd (7 Huxley Avenue, Manchester M8 0SJ). We arrange all-inclusive Umrah packages for Exeter, Devon, and the Southwest. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335 or visit packagesumrah.co.uk.

Exeter Mosque’s Remarkable Journey — 17 People in 1976 to £1.7m Purpose-Built 2020

The history of the Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre is one of the most complete and inspiring founding narratives in our portfolio. It begins in the 1970s with a community that had no institutional infrastructure at all: ‘In the 1970s Muslims in Exeter offered their daily prayers in their homes. The majority of Muslims who first moved to Exeter were involved in the restaurant trade. On special occasions such as Eid, they would invite the Muslim community to celebrate together at their restaurants.’

The turning point came from the University of Exeter’s international Muslim student population: ‘In the mid-1970s, Exeter university students from around the Muslim world came together and started organising communal prayers and events. They started by hiring the university hall for Friday prayer and as the numbers increased, the Muslim community recognised the need for a permanent space where they could pray together and socialise.’ A meeting was organised — the first attended by just 17 people, ‘both Exeter University students and local businessmen.’

From that meeting of 17, the community raised sufficient funds to purchase 15 York Road in 1976 — a permanent home for prayer and community life. As the congregation grew, 14 York Road was also purchased. The community continued to grow through the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. In the late 2010s, following the purchase of land from the adjacent school, work began on a purpose-built mosque — a dedicated Islamic building designed from the ground up for the Exeter Muslim community’s needs. After three years of construction and a cost of approximately £1.7 million — funded by the Exeter Muslim community — the new mosque opened in 2020.

The Exeter Mosque founding and Umrah: from 17 people who hired a university hall for Friday prayer, to a £1.7 million purpose-built mosque, in approximately 45 years. This is the trajectory of sustained communal effort toward a destination — the permanent mosque — that seemed impossibly expensive for a small community in a city as far from the centres of English Muslim population as Exeter. The same quality of sustained effort — the Umrah aspiration held over years, saved toward, planned for — is the essence of what the Exeter Muslim community has always demonstrated.

Exeter Cathedral — The Longest Gothic Vault in the World, 96 Metres

Exeter Cathedral’s nave and quire vaulting — a continuous Gothic stone ceiling that extends approximately 96 metres without any structural break — is one of the great engineering and aesthetic achievements of medieval England. The decision to build the vaulting as a single uninterrupted run, rather than dividing it into bays separated by visible structural breaks as most cathedrals do, was an expression of extraordinary ambition. The result is a space of remarkable visual coherence: standing at one end of the nave and looking toward the high altar, the eye follows an unbroken curved stone ceiling for the full length of the building.

The West Front screen of Exeter Cathedral contains approximately 300 carved stone figures arranged in three tiers across the facade — the largest surviving collection of medieval English carved stone figures on any building in England. Dating from the late 14th century, the figures include kings, bishops, knights, and angels in a programme that originally combined political and theological imagery. The screen was extensively restored in the 19th century but retains its medieval arrangement.

The Cathedral Green in front of Exeter Cathedral — a walled green space in the heart of the city centre — is one of England’s finest enclosed urban spaces: the medieval cathedral on one side, Georgian terraces on the others, the green open space in the centre. It is the heart of Exeter’s civic identity and one of the most beautiful urban spaces in the southwest of England.

The Gothic vault and the Haram: the uninterrupted Gothic vault of Exeter Cathedral — 96 metres of continuous stone arch — and the vast colonnaded interior of the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah are both expressions of the human desire to create a sacred interior space of overwhelming scale. The medieval cathedral masons who built Exeter’s vault and the architects who expanded the Haram are separated by faith, by century, and by geography — but the impulse to create a sacred space that exceeds what any individual can encompass is the same impulse. Exeter, with its cathedral and its mosque, contains both traditions.

Isca Dumnoniorum — Roman Exeter and the City’s Ancient Depth

The Romans established Isca Dumnoniorum — the legionary fortress of Exeter — in approximately 55 AD, as part of the conquest of southwest Britain. The second Augustan Legion was based here. Exeter was one of the four or five primary legionary fortresses of Roman Britain — alongside York (Eboracum), Chester (Deva), and Caerleon (Isca Silurum in Wales). The Roman walls of Exeter — built in the 2nd or 3rd century AD — still encircle much of the historic city centre, and substantial sections of the walls survive, some reaching their original height. The Rougemont Gardens, immediately north of the city centre, preserve a particularly impressive section of Roman wall alongside medieval additions.

The Exeter City Council estimates that Exeter is one of England’s most archaeologically rich cities — layers of Roman, Saxon, medieval, and later history beneath the modern streets. The Roman mosaic discovered in the Cathedral Close, the Saxon minster beneath the cathedral, the medieval guildhall on the High Street (one of England’s oldest municipal buildings, still in use) — Exeter’s depth of history is extraordinary for a city of its size.

Exeter’s Airport Situation — Bristol 70 Miles or Heathrow via GWR Train

Exeter’s geography places it at considerable distance from England’s major Umrah airports. Bristol Airport (BRS) at 70 miles north via M5 is the most practical first option for Umrah charter packages. London Heathrow (LHR) at approximately 165 miles east is significantly further but provides Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah for premium packages. The GWR train from Exeter St David’s station to London Paddington (approximately 2 hours) followed by the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow (approximately 30 minutes) gives a total of approximately 2.5 hours — making LHR accessible for Exeter pilgrims who prefer public transport, particularly for daytime flights.

Exeter Airport (EXT) — honest assessment: Exeter Airport is approximately 5 miles east of the city centre. However, Exeter Airport has very limited international connections and no practical Umrah provision in 2027. Despite being the geographically closest airport to Exeter, EXT is not usable for Umrah. Bristol (BRS, 70 miles) is Exeter’s correct Umrah airport for charter packages; Heathrow (LHR, 165 miles, GWR train ~2.5 hrs) for Saudi direct Jeddah premium packages.

Why LHR is still recommended

For Exeter’s 4★/5★ pilgrims and Ramadan Umrah, Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah from LHR (~6h 30m, no connections) is the best available option. The longer pre-dawn drive or GWR train journey is justified by the direct flight and the superior Umrah provision at LHR.

Saudi Airlines (Saudia) direct from LHR to Jeddah: approximately 6 hours 30 minutes. No connecting hub.

Taxi from Exeter to LHR

Approximately £168–220 — a significant journey; GWR train may be preferable

Our Exeter approach: We check both BRS (70 miles north, M5) and LHR (165 miles east, M5/M4 or GWR train) for every Exeter booking. For 3★ off-peak packages, BRS charter options are the priority. For 4★/5★ packages and Ramadan Umrah, LHR with Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah is recommended. Exeter is one of our most geographically remote communities — we acknowledge this honestly and work harder to find the best value for Devon pilgrims.

Exeter’s Muslim Community — Restaurants, Students, and 45 Years of Community Building

Exeter’s Muslim community has a founding narrative unlike any other in our portfolio. The community’s own account describes a beginning in restaurant trade and university life — Pakistani restaurateurs celebrating Eid together, and international Muslim students at the University of Exeter beginning to organise communal Friday prayers in hired university spaces. The convergence of restaurant-trade Pakistani families and internationally diverse university students gave Exeter’s Muslim community its specific character from the start: a small community of different backgrounds, united by the shared need for a space to pray together.

The decision at the first meeting of 17 people — to purchase 15 York Road as a permanent mosque — set in motion a 45-year project of community building that culminated in the 2020 opening of the purpose-built Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre. The new building at 12-15 York Road represents the community’s arrival as a permanent institutional presence in Exeter — not a converted house or hired hall, but a purpose-designed mosque built for £1.7 million on land that includes the site of the original 15 York Road purchase.

Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre — 12-15 York Road, EX4 6PG

Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre at 12-15 York Road, Exeter, Devon EX4 6PG (Charity number 1212277, phone 01392 250597, enquiries@exetermosque.org.uk) is Devon’s primary mosque — purpose-built and opened in 2020. The mosque serves the Exeter Muslim community with five daily prayers, Friday Jumu’ah, Islamic education, and cultural programming. The building’s construction — costing approximately £1.7 million, funded by the Exeter Muslim community’s sustained fundraising — is one of the most significant Muslim community building achievements in southwest England.

University of Exeter Muslim Students

The University of Exeter — a Russell Group research university with approximately 30,000 students — has a significant international Muslim student population. The University’s Islamic Society provides Jumu’ah prayers, Ramadan events, and Islamic community life for Muslim students at the Streatham Campus and St Luke’s Campus in Exeter. The mosque at York Road has historical roots in the university’s international Muslim student community — it was university students who first organised communal Friday prayers in the mid-1970s.

  • Easter vacation 2027: best student Umrah window. From £659/pp for 7 nights. BRS (M5 north, 70 miles) or LHR (GWR train ~2.5 hrs).
  • Christmas/winter vacation: from £645–699/pp. Quietest Haram. Ideal for students.
  • Group Umrah for University of Exeter Islamic Society: from £625/pp (10+). Combined with local community groups.
  • International Muslim students — Malaysian, Pakistani, Gulf states — performing Umrah from England for the first time, departing from Devon.

The Jurassic Coast — UNESCO World Heritage Site Near Exeter

The Jurassic Coast — a 95-mile stretch of Devon and Dorset coastline designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 — begins approximately 25 miles east of Exeter at Beer and Seaton. The Jurassic Coast preserves 185 million years of geological history in its cliffs, including some of England’s most dramatic coastal scenery at Chesil Beach, Durdle Door, and Lyme Regis. Exeter’s proximity to the Jurassic Coast — as well as to Dartmoor National Park (approximately 15 miles southwest) and Exmoor National Park (approximately 30 miles north) — gives it a position within one of England’s most remarkable natural heritage landscapes.

The Muslim families of Exeter live in a city surrounded by exceptional natural beauty — the red sandstone hills of Devon, the dramatic coast of the English Channel to the south, the moors to the north and southwest. The journey to Makkah from this landscape — from the green Devon hills to the bare rock valleys of the Hijaz — is one of the most dramatic environmental transitions any English pilgrim makes. The red Devon soil and the white marble of the Haram: both are what the Earth produces. The Exeter pilgrim knows what it is to be rooted in a specific landscape and to journey away from it.

By Makkah night 4, the Gothic vault of Exeter Cathedral and the red Devon hills are entirely forgotten — the Haram is everything. Easter and Christmas university vacations fit 10 nights. From £695/pp off-peak.

12 Nights from Exeter — From £735/pp

Twelve nights suits Exeter families using the full Easter or Christmas school break, elderly York Road pilgrims needing a relaxed pace, and mosque groups wanting the complete Ziyarat programme. Seven Makkah nights, 5 Madinah nights. From £735/pp off-peak.

14 Nights from Exeter — From £775/pp

Two full weeks — the most complete Umrah experience for Exeter pilgrims. Eight Makkah nights, 6 Madinah nights. For the landmark Exeter family Umrah — from Devon’s cathedral city to the House of Allah — 14 nights honours the full significance of the longest Umrah journey in our Southwest England portfolio. From £775/pp off-peak.

Exeter Umrah by Pilgrim Type

Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre Groups

Group Umrah from the Exeter Mosque congregation draws from EX1, EX2, EX4, and the wider Devon Muslim geography. For Exeter mosque groups of 10+:

  • Group rate from £625/pp (3-star, off-peak). Airport confirmed at booking — BRS for charter (M5 north, 70 miles, 65–75 min pre-dawn) or LHR for Saudi direct (GWR train ~2.5 hrs or pre-dawn drive ~2h 5m).
  • A community that funded a £1.7 million mosque through community fundraising has the organisational capacity for group Umrah — the same sustained communal effort, directed toward the sacred journey to Makkah.
  • Combined Exeter + Plymouth groups: both communities use the M5/A38 north corridor to BRS — joint group minibus practical.
  • Same-flight allocation. Same hotel floor. Simultaneous visa processing. Coordinated Rawdah visiting slots.

University of Exeter Muslim Students

For University of Exeter Muslim students at Streatham Campus or St Luke’s Campus:

  • Easter vacation 2027: best student window. From £659/pp. BRS via M5 (65–75 min pre-dawn) or GWR to LHR (~2.5 hrs).
  • Christmas/winter vacation: from £645–699/pp. Quietest Haram. Best for students who cannot leave during term.
  • Group rate (10+ students): from £625/pp. Combined with community mosque groups.
  • International Muslim students at Exeter — Malaysian, Pakistani, Gulf state — for whom this may be their first Umrah from England.

Elderly Exeter Pilgrims — The Restaurant Trade Pioneers

For the founding generation of Exeter’s Muslim community — the Pakistani restaurateurs who first gathered for Eid at their restaurants, and who later bought 15 York Road to build a mosque:

  • GWR train from Exeter St David’s: approximately 2 hours to London Paddington → Elizabeth Line to Heathrow (~30 min). Total approximately 2h 30m–2h 45m. Seated, no driving, no parking. For elderly pilgrims who prefer public transport, this is the recommended LHR option.
  • BRS by taxi for charter flights: approximately £78–105, 65–75 minutes pre-dawn via M5. Clear motorway.
  • Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah from LHR: 6h 30m, no connections. For elderly pilgrims, direct flight removes all connecting hub complexity.
  • 4-star or 5-star accommodation: Haram proximity essential.

Exeter and Devon Women’s Groups

For Exeter and Devon Muslim women performing Umrah without a Mahram — women aged 18+ may travel independently under current Saudi regulations:

  • Women-only group packages from £625/pp (10+). Women-only room configurations throughout.
  • Female liaison throughout Saudi Arabia.
  • GWR train from Exeter St David’s → Paddington → Heathrow (~2.5 hrs total): seated, safe, no driving. Highly recommended for Exeter women’s groups.
  • Group taxi to BRS: approximately £78–105, 65–78 minutes pre-dawn.

Ramadan Umrah from Exeter 2027

Ramadan 2027 begins approximately 8 February 2027. Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre — purpose-built in 2020 — is at its most spiritually vibrant during Ramadan. For Ramadan Umrah from Exeter: Saudi Airlines direct from Heathrow (LHR) is strongly recommended — the quality and directness of the Ramadan Saudi service justifies the longer journey from Devon. GWR from Exeter St David’s (~2.5 hrs to LHR). Or pre-dawn drive M5/M4 (~2h 5m). Book by September 2026 for Last Ashra.

Frequently Asked Questions — Umrah Packages from Exeter 2027

Airport Questions

Which airport do Exeter pilgrims use for Umrah?

Bristol Airport (BRS, ~70 miles north via M5, ~65–78 min pre-dawn) for 3★ charter packages, and London Heathrow (LHR, ~165 miles east via M5/M4, ~2h 5m pre-dawn; or GWR train ~2.5 hrs) for Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah on premium and Ramadan bookings. Both are assessed for every Exeter booking.

How far is Bristol Airport from Exeter?

Approximately 70–75 miles north via M5 — approximately 75–92 minutes off-peak; 65–78 minutes at 2–3am pre-dawn on the clear M5.

How far is Heathrow Airport from Exeter?

Approximately 165–170 miles east via M5/M4 — approximately 2h 30m–3h 15m off-peak; approximately 2h 5m–2h 30m at pre-dawn. GWR train from Exeter St David’s: approximately 2.5 hours total to LHR.

Is there a train from Exeter to Heathrow Airport?

Yes — Exeter St David’s station → London Paddington (~2 hours on GWR Great Western Main Line) → Elizabeth Line Paddington → Heathrow (~30 minutes). Total approximately 2h 30m–2h 45m. Recommended for elderly pilgrims and women’s groups who prefer public transport.

Why is Exeter Airport (EXT) not used for Umrah?

Exeter Airport (EXT), approximately 5 miles from the city centre, has no Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah and no meaningful Umrah charter provision in 2027. Despite being the nearest airport, EXT is not viable for Umrah. Bristol (BRS, 70 miles) or Heathrow (LHR, 165 miles) are the correct options.

What time should I leave Exeter for a 6am BRS flight?

Leave York Road at approximately 3:30–3:45am. A30/A377 north, M5 north from Junction 31, Junction 22, A38 to BRS — approximately 65–70 minutes pre-dawn.

Heritage and Community Questions

What is the Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre?

Exeter Mosque & Cultural Centre at 12-15 York Road, Exeter EX4 6PG (Charity 1212277, phone 01392 250597). Purpose-built mosque opened 2020, costing approximately £1.7 million, funded by the Exeter Muslim community after three years of construction. Founded from a 1970s community that began in homes and restaurant gatherings.

How was the Exeter Mosque founded?

In the mid-1970s, 17 people — Exeter University international Muslim students and local Pakistani businessmen — met to organise communal Friday prayers. They hired the university hall, then purchased 15 York Road in 1976 as a permanent mosque. As the congregation grew, additional properties were purchased. The community built a purpose-built £1.7m mosque that opened in 2020.

What is Exeter Cathedral?

Exeter Cathedral (Cathedral Church of Saint Peter) contains what has been described as the longest uninterrupted Gothic stone vault in the world — approximately 96 metres of continuous vaulting without structural break. Its West Front screen contains approximately 300 medieval carved stone figures. Founded 1050, current building from the 13th–14th centuries.

What is the Jurassic Coast?

The Jurassic Coast is a 95-mile stretch of Devon and Dorset coastline designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, preserving 185 million years of geological history. Book Your Exeter Umrah — From Devon’s Cathedral City to the House of Allah

Seventeen people met in Exeter in the mid-1970s and decided to build a mosque. They were restaurant workers and university students — the first two groups through whom Islam established itself in most English towns in the post-war period. They hired a university hall for Friday prayer. They raised money. They bought 15 York Road. They bought 14 York Road when the congregation grew too large for one property. They raised £1.7 million and built a purpose-designed mosque that opened in 2020. From 17 people to a £1.7 million building, in approximately 45 years.

The same quality of patient, sustained, collective effort is what Umrah aspiration requires from a community as geographically remote from England’s Umrah airports as Exeter is. The M5 north to Bristol Airport takes 65 minutes at 3am. The GWR train to Paddington takes 2 hours. The Elizabeth Line to Heathrow takes another 30 minutes. The Saudi Airlines flight to Jeddah takes 6 hours 30 minutes. None of these distances are insuperable. They are simply the distances that stand between Devon’s cathedral city and the house of Allah — and communities that can raise £1.7 million to build a mosque can manage a motorway journey in the dark.

The M5 north from Junction 31 at 3:30am: the Devon countryside invisible in the darkness, the motorway opening north, Bristol Airport signs, Junction 22, A38, terminal, 65 minutes from the mosque on York Road to the check-in hall. Or the GWR from Exeter St David’s — the same Great Western Railway that crosses half of England — to Paddington, Elizabeth Line to Heathrow, 2.5 hours from Devon to the terminal. Saudi Airlines direct. Six hours thirty minutes. Jeddah. Makkah. From £645/pp all-inclusive. £99 deposit. Named hotel before deposit. ATOL Certificate at booking. Same-day quotes for Exeter, Plymouth, Tiverton, Newton Abbot, Torquay, and all Devon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is Umrah and who can perform it?

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.

Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”

The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.

Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.

Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
