More Than Just Umrah Packages

Umrah Packages from Derry / Londonderry 2027 — All-Inclusive from £645/pp | The Walled City — NWIA Pennyburn Industrial Estate, City of Derry Airport 8 Miles, Belfast International 70 Miles

QUICK ANSWER: Packages Umrah arranges all-inclusive Umrah packages for Derry/Londonderry pilgrims from £645/pp for 7 nights (3-star, off-peak months). City of Derry Airport (LDY) is approximately 6–8 miles northeast via A2 — approximately 12–18 minutes. Belfast International Airport (BFS) is approximately 70–72 miles east via A6/M2 — approximately 65–80 minutes pre-dawn. Belfast City Airport (BHD) approximately 72 miles. Dublin Airport (DUB) approximately 88 miles south via A5/N2 — approximately 85–100 minutes. Belfast International (BFS) is the primary Umrah airport with Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah. LDY checked every booking. £99 deposit. ATOL protected. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335.

DERRY/LONDONDERRY — THE WALLED CITY, NWIA PENNYBURN, FOUR AIRPORTS ASSESSED: Derry is Northern Ireland’s second-largest city and the only completely walled city in Ireland — its 17th-century walls intact for over 400 years. The North West Islamic Association (NWIA) at Hyde Business Park, Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Londonderry BT48 0LU (website: nwia.org.uk) serves Muslims across the North West of Northern Ireland and also works across the border. City of Derry Airport (LDY) is 8 miles northeast. Belfast International (BFS) 70 miles east. No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Derry/Londonderry. This is the first.

Derry — officially Londonderry — is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and one of the most historically significant cities in Ireland. Situated on the west bank of the River Foyle in County Londonderry, approximately 70 miles northwest of Belfast and 90 miles north of Dublin, the city of approximately 85,000 people (2021 census) is the administrative centre of the Derry and Strabane District Council area. The city is distinguished from every other settlement in Ireland by a single remarkable physical feature: its 17th-century city walls, which remain completely intact and encircle the old city centre in a continuous circuit of approximately 1.5 kilometres.

The name question — Derry or Londonderry — is, in Northern Ireland, deeply political. The city’s original name is Doire Colmcille (the oak grove of Saint Columba) in Irish — anglicised as Derry. In 1613, the city was granted a royal charter by King James I and ‘planted’ with English and Scottish settlers, who renamed it Londonderry in honour of the City of London companies that funded the plantation. The two names carry, to this day, significant political and community meaning: nationalist and republican communities predominantly use Derry; unionist and loyalist communities predominantly use Londonderry. This page uses both, as is common in official and neutral contexts.

Derry’s Muslim community is served by the North West Islamic Association (NWIA) at Hyde Business Park, 3, Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Londonderry BT48 0LU (website: nwia.org.uk, Facebook: nwia.org.uk). ‘Community centre for the Muslims living in the city of Derry/Londonderry and the North West of Northern Ireland.’ The NWIA provides Friday Jumu’ah, Islamic education, Arabic classes for children, welfare support, funeral services, and wedding (Nikah) services. The association has a ‘Masjid Project’ — fundraising for a dedicated purpose-built mosque. ‘Hundreds of visitors from the local community from all ages and beliefs come to visit North West Islamic Community Centre every year’ — including youth groups from both sides of the border. The mosque has wheelchair accessible parking, entrance, restrooms, and onsite parking.

No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Derry/Londonderry. Northern Ireland’s walled city — with its extraordinary history, its Muslim community at Pennyburn Industrial Estate, and its position equidistant between City of Derry Airport and the Belfast airports — has been invisible to the Umrah market. This is the first dedicated Derry/Londonderry Umrah page.

The Walled City — Built 1613–1619, The Only Intact Walled City in Ireland

Derry’s city walls were built between 1613 and 1619 as part of the Ulster Plantation — the large-scale colonisation of Ulster by English and Scottish Protestant settlers, sponsored by the City of London and various London companies. The walls enclose an area of approximately 1.5 kilometres in circumference on the west bank of the River Foyle, rising to approximately 8 metres in height. They are constructed of local sandstone and basalt, and they remain completely intact — undamaged and unbreached over more than 400 years of sometimes violent history.

The walls withstood a famous siege: the Great Siege of Derry (1688–89), when the largely Protestant garrison of Derry held out against the forces of the Catholic King James II for 105 days. The siege — in which the population of the city endured starvation, disease, and bombardment before the arrival of relief ships broke the boom across the River Foyle on 28 July 1689 — became one of the defining events of Ulster Protestant historical consciousness. The Apprentice Boys of Derry, an organisation that continues today, commemorate the closing of the city gates against the Jacobite forces and the subsequent siege through annual marches on the walls.

The walls are now a public amenity — a walkway above the city that tourists and residents use throughout the year, with views from the top of the walls into both the old city and the Bogside below. The walls are free to walk and provide a continuous circuit around the original medieval street plan of the old city. They are recognised by UNESCO as a potential World Heritage Site and are the centrepiece of Derry’s heritage tourism offer. For Derry’s Muslim community, the walls are part of the physical backdrop of their daily life — the city’s most visible historical feature, visible from across the River Foyle and from the surrounding countryside.

The Walled City and the Ka’ba: the city walls of Derry were built in 1613–1619 — approximately 40 years after the Ottoman Empire was at the height of its power, approximately 1,000 years after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made the Hijra from Makkah to Madinah. The Ka’ba has stood since Ibrahim (peace be upon him) built it — perhaps 4,000 years. Derry’s walls, which have stood for 400 years, are a fraction of that age. Both are enclosed sacred spaces that human communities have built, maintained, and defended because they understand that some places require walls — physical or spiritual — to hold what is most precious. The Umrah pilgrim from Derry passes from one walled city to another: from the Foyle to the Haram.

Bloody Sunday — 30 January 1972, the Bogside, Derry

On 30 January 1972 — a date that remains one of the most significant in the modern history of Ireland — soldiers of the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment opened fire on a crowd of civil rights marchers in the Bogside area of Derry. Twenty-eight people were shot; fourteen died on the day or shortly afterward. All were civilians. All were unarmed. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 59. It was the deadliest incident for civilians in the Troubles.

The Widgery Tribunal of 1972 cleared the soldiers. The Saville Inquiry — established in 1998 by Prime Minister Tony Blair, spanning 12 years, publishing its report in June 2010 — concluded that all 14 deaths were unjustified and unjustifiable, that the victims were innocent, and that the soldiers had fired first. Prime Minister David Cameron’s statement on the day of the Saville Report’s publication — ‘What happened should never, ever have happened. The families of the dead do not need to justify themselves. On behalf of the Government — indeed, on behalf of our country — I am deeply sorry’ — was one of the most significant British Government apologies in modern history.

The Museum of Free Derry, on Glenfada Park in the Bogside, documents Bloody Sunday and the wider civil rights struggle in Derry. Free Derry Corner — the gable end wall of a house in the Bogside, painted with the words ‘You Are Now Entering Free Derry’ — is one of Northern Ireland’s most recognised political murals.

Peace Bridge and the City of Culture — Derry’s Renewal

The Peace Bridge — a sinuous cable-stayed footbridge over the River Foyle, opened in June 2011 — connects the predominantly nationalist Cityside (west bank) with the predominantly unionist Waterside (east bank) for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge was funded by the European Union’s PEACE programme and the International Fund for Ireland and is designed as a physical expression of cross-community connection. It carries approximately 1 million crossings per year and has become one of Derry’s most visible symbols of peace and reconciliation.

In 2013, Derry/Londonderry became the UK’s inaugural City of Culture — the first city to hold the designation that has since been held by Hull, Coventry, and Bradford. The year of culture brought major cultural events, international visitors, and significant media attention to a city that had been primarily known internationally for its Troubles-era history. The City of Culture designation helped shift Derry’s global identity from conflict to creativity.

Derry/Londonderry Airport Options — LDY 8 Miles, BFS 70 Miles, Dublin 88 Miles

Derry/Londonderry’s position in the northwest of Northern Ireland, close to the Irish border and equidistant between Belfast and Donegal, gives it an airport geography unlike any other city in our portfolio. Four airports are within reasonable reach — and the choice between them depends on Umrah provision, pricing, and departure times for specific bookings.

Our Derry/Londonderry recommendation: Belfast International Airport (BFS, ~70 miles east via A6/M2, 58–72 minutes pre-dawn) as the standard primary Umrah airport — strong Saudi Airlines and Umrah charter provision. Dublin Airport (DUB, ~88 miles south via A5/N2, 85–100 minutes pre-dawn, open border, no controls) checked when DUB scheduling significantly better — and for premium 4★/5★ bookings. City of Derry Airport (LDY, 8 miles, 12 minutes) checked every booking. All four airports assessed for every Derry booking.

NWIA — North West Islamic Association, Serving Both Sides of the Border

The North West Islamic Association (NWIA) at Hyde Business Park, 3, Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Londonderry BT48 0LU (website: nwia.org.uk) is one of the most distinctive Muslim community institutions in our entire Northern Ireland portfolio. Its description — ‘community centre for the Muslims living in the city of Derry/Londonderry and the North West of Northern Ireland’ — captures a community that serves a geographically broad area in a region defined by borders, both physical and political.

The NWIA’s most remarkable community dimension is its cross-border reach. ‘Youth group from both sides of the border visits North West Islamic Community Centre regularly to learn the Muslim culture and practices.’ The Irish land border — which runs approximately 15 miles south and east of Derry, separating Northern Ireland from County Donegal in the Republic — is, for the NWIA, not a barrier but a community interface. The Pennyburn centre draws Muslim visitors and community members from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, from both sides of the political divide that has shaped Derry’s history.

The NWIA also runs a **Masjid Project** — actively fundraising for a dedicated purpose-built mosque to serve Derry’s growing Muslim community. The hadith on the NWIA’s project page: ‘Whoever builds a mosque, desiring thereby Allah’s pleasure, Allah builds for him the like of it in paradise.’ The mosque project, when complete, will be a landmark for Muslim life in Northern Ireland’s second city.

The NWIA provides: Friday Jumu’ah, Islamic education and Arabic classes for children, welfare support, funeral services, Nikah (Islamic marriage) ceremonies, and extensive interfaith outreach. Hundreds of visitors from the wider Derry community — of all ages and faiths — come to the centre each year. The NWIA participates in the full range of Derry’s civic and cultural life, including events at the Guildhall.

7 Nights from Derry/Londonderry — From £645/pp

Seven nights suits Derry working families on standard annual leave. For BFS: leave Pennyburn at 2:55–3:10am for a 6am BFS departure — A6 east from Derry toward Dungiven, M2 east to Belfast International Airport: approximately 58–68 minutes pre-dawn. For DUB: leave at 2:40–2:55am — A5 south from Derry, N2 south to Dublin: approximately 85–95 minutes. Four Makkah nights, 3 Madinah nights. From £645/pp off-peak. £99 deposit.

10 Nights from Derry/Londonderry — From £695/pp

Ten nights — 6 Makkah nights, 4 Madinah nights — is our most recommended Derry format. Ten nights properly honours the considerable journey from Northern Ireland’s walled city — the city of the Peace Bridge and the Bogside murals — to Makkah. By Makkah night 4, the city walls and the Foyle are entirely forgotten — the Haram is everything. Northern Ireland Easter and Christmas school breaks suit 10 nights. From £695/pp off-peak.

12 Nights from Derry/Londonderry — From £735/pp

Twelve nights suits Derry families using the full Northern Ireland Easter or Christmas school break, elderly Pennyburn pilgrims needing a relaxed pace, and NWIA groups wanting the complete Ziyarat programme. Seven Makkah nights, 5 Madinah nights. From £735/pp off-peak.

14 Nights from Derry/Londonderry — From £775/pp

Two full weeks — 8 Makkah nights, 6 Madinah nights. For the landmark Derry family Umrah — from the walled city on the Foyle to the House of Allah — 14 nights honours the full significance of the journey from Northern Ireland’s most historically complex city to Islam’s most sacred. From £775/pp off-peak.

Frequently Asked Questions — Umrah Packages from Derry / Londonderry 2027

Airport Questions

Which airport do Derry/Londonderry pilgrims use for Umrah?

Belfast International Airport (BFS, ~70 miles east via A6/M2, ~58–72 min pre-dawn) is the primary Umrah airport for Derry — Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah. Dublin Airport (DUB, ~88 miles south via A5/N2, ~85–100 min, open border — no controls) checked when DUB scheduling better. City of Derry Airport (LDY, ~8 miles, ~12 min) checked every booking.

How far is Belfast International Airport from Derry?

Approximately 70–72 miles east via A6/M2 — approximately 65–82 minutes off-peak; 58–72 minutes at 2–3am pre-dawn on the clear A6 and M2.

Can Derry pilgrims use Dublin Airport for Umrah?

Yes — Dublin Airport (DUB) is approximately 88 miles south via A5/N2, approximately 85–100 minutes pre-dawn. Excellent Saudi Airlines Jeddah provision from DUB. The Irish border between Northern Ireland and the Republic is an open border — no passport or customs controls for UK/Irish citizens. Many Derry families already use Dublin Airport routinely. Checked every booking when DUB scheduling is better than BFS.

How far is City of Derry Airport from the city centre?

Approximately 6–8 miles northeast via A2 — approximately 12–18 minutes. LDY is by far the closest airport to Derry but has limited Umrah provision in 2027. Checked every booking.

What time should I leave Derry for a 6am BFS flight?

Leave Pennyburn Industrial Estate at approximately 2:55–3:10am. A6 east through Dungiven, M2 east to Belfast International Airport — approximately 58–68 minutes pre-dawn.

Is the Irish border open for travel to Dublin Airport?

Yes — the Common Travel Area (CTA) means there are no passport or customs controls on the Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland land border. Driving from Derry to Dublin Airport crosses the border without stopping. UK citizens and Irish citizens do not require passports for this crossing, though carrying a passport is recommended for air travel from DUB.

Heritage and Community Questions

Why does the city have two names — Derry and Londonderry?

The city’s original Irish name is Doire (the oak grove), anglicised as Derry. In 1613, King James I granted the city to the City of London companies as part of the Ulster Plantation, renaming it Londonderry. The two names carry political significance in Northern Ireland: nationalist and republican communities predominantly use Derry; unionist and loyalist communities predominantly use Londonderry. This page uses both names.

What are the city walls of Derry?

Built between 1613 and 1619 as part of the Ulster Plantation, Derry’s city walls form a continuous circuit of approximately 1.5 kilometres around the old city centre. They are completely intact — the only completely walled city in Ireland. They stand approximately 8 metres high and are constructed of local sandstone and basalt. Free to walk at all times.

What was Bloody Sunday?

On 30 January 1972, soldiers of the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment shot 28 civilians during a civil rights march in the Bogside area of Derry, killing 14. All were unarmed civilians. The Saville Inquiry (1998–2010) concluded all deaths were unjustified. Prime Minister David Cameron publicly apologised on behalf of the British Government in June 2010.

What is the Peace Bridge?

The Peace Bridge is a cable-stayed pedestrian and cycle footbridge across the River Foyle in Derry, opened in June 2011. Funded by the EU’s PEACE programme and the International Fund for Ireland, it connects the predominantly nationalist Cityside (west bank) with the predominantly unionist Waterside (east bank). Approximately 1 million crossings per year.

What is the North West Islamic Association (NWIA)?

NWIA at Hyde Business Park, 3, Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Londonderry BT48 0LU (website: nwia.org.uk). Sunni mosque and community centre for the Muslims of Derry/Londonderry and the North West of Northern Ireland. Friday Jumu’ah, Arabic and Islamic education for children, welfare support, funeral services, Nikah ceremonies, interfaith outreach. Masjid Project: fundraising for a purpose-built mosque. Cross-border community engagement with County Donegal.

Does the NWIA serve communities in the Republic of Ireland?

Yes — the NWIA describes itself as serving communities across the North West of Northern Ireland, and youth groups from ‘both sides of the border’ visit the centre. The NWIA’s cross-border reach extends to County Donegal communities. For Umrah, Dublin Airport (DUB, open border) is an option for combined Derry/Donegal groups.

What are Northern Ireland school holiday dates for Derry?

Schools in Derry City and Strabane District follow the Northern Ireland school holiday calendar, which differs from both English and Scottish school dates. Always confirm with your child’s school.

Can Derry women perform Umrah without a Mahram?

Yes — under current Saudi regulations, women aged 18+ may travel for Umrah without a Mahram. Women-only packages. Group taxi to BFS approximately £75–100 (58–72 min pre-dawn) or DUB approximately £90–120 (85–95 min pre-dawn, open border).

Book Your Derry / Londonderry Umrah — From the Walled City to the House of Allah

Derry’s city walls have stood for over 400 years — built in 1613, besieged in 1688, walked by generations of residents, climbed by tourists who come from across the world to see the only completely walled city in Ireland. They have endured the Great Siege, the Famine, the Troubles, the Peace Process, and the cultural renaissance of the City of Culture year. They are still there: a continuous circuit of sandstone and basalt above the Bogside and the old city, with the Foyle visible to the east.

The Muslim community of Pennyburn Industrial Estate has built its own kind of enclosure — not of stone but of community: Friday prayers, Arabic classes for children, welfare support, interfaith outreach, youth groups from both sides of the border. The NWIA’s Masjid Project — ‘Whoever builds a mosque, desiring thereby Allah’s pleasure, Allah builds for him the like of it in paradise’ — is the community’s next enclosure: a dedicated mosque for Derry’s Muslim families, to stand in this walled city beside the River Foyle.

The Umrah aspiration of the Pennyburn congregation connects the walled city to the Ka’ba — from one enclosed sacred space to another. Leave Pennyburn at 2:55am: A6 east from Derry, through Dungiven, the mountains of Sperrin passing in the darkness, M2 east to Belfast International, 65 minutes. Saudi Airlines direct. Six hours thirty minutes. Jeddah. Makkah. From £645/pp all-inclusive. £99 deposit. Same-day quotes for Derry, Strabane, Limavady, Eglinton, and Letterkenny across the border.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is Umrah and who can perform it?

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.

Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”

The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.

Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.

Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
