More Than Just Umrah Packages
QUICK ANSWER: Packages Umrah arranges all-inclusive Umrah packages for Basingstoke pilgrims from £645/pp for 7 nights (3-star, off-peak months). London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is approximately 35–40 miles northeast of Basingstoke via the M3 motorway — approximately 38–52 minutes by car; 32–42 minutes pre-dawn at 2–3am on the clear M3. LHR is Basingstoke’s primary Umrah airport — Saudi Airlines direct to Jeddah (~6h 30m). London Gatwick (LGW, ~45–50 miles east via M3/A31/M25/M23) is also checked when charter packages offer better value. £99 deposit. ATOL protected. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335.
THE M3 IS BASINGSTOKE’S UMRAH MOTORWAY: The M3 motorway connects Basingstoke directly to London — and its Junction 2/M25 interchange provides the most direct route to Heathrow Airport. From Basingstoke, the M3 northeast is entirely clear at 2–3am pre-dawn: 35–40 miles to LHR in approximately 32–42 minutes. No Umrah operator has built a Basingstoke page. The first Muslim community in Hampshire’s major town to book Umrah through a page dedicated to them will book through this one.
Basingstoke is Hampshire’s largest town — a post-war new town expansion on the site of an ancient market town, with a population of approximately 113,000 people. Situated approximately 48 miles southwest of central London and 35 miles from Heathrow Airport via the M3, Basingstoke is one of the south of England’s primary commuter and business towns — home to major corporate headquarters including insurance companies, pharmaceutical firms, and technology businesses that have established their UK operations in this well-connected Hampshire location.
Basingstoke’s post-war identity as a new town — planned expansion from the 1960s, designed ring road, large-scale residential development in estates such as Buckskin (RG22), Winklebury, Popley, and Chineham — gives it a very specific modern character. The town centre around Festival Place is essentially a 1970s and 1980s creation built around a large shopping centre and a ring road. Basingstoke was planned to receive overspill population from London, and it received it — from every community in London’s orbit, including Pakistani Muslim families who settled in the new housing estates of Buckskin and the surrounding areas.
Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire — a small village approximately 7 miles west of Basingstoke — in 1775. She spent the first 25 years of her life in the county, attending balls and assemblies at Basingstoke’s town hall. The Basingstoke connection to Jane Austen is not incidental: the town’s Assembly Rooms were a social hub for the Hampshire gentry, and the Austen family — her father was a rector — moved in the same social circles as Basingstoke’s prosperous families. Jane Austen’s Hampshire is the same Hampshire that now contains Basingstoke’s Pakistani Muslim community, its two mosques, and the M3 that takes its pilgrims to Heathrow.
Basing House — approximately 2 miles east of Basingstoke town centre, in the village of Old Basing — was one of the most significant Royalist strongholds of the English Civil War. Oliver Cromwell besieged Basing House in 1645; the house was eventually taken and largely destroyed. The ruins, now in the care of Hampshire County Council, are open to visitors. Basing House was one of the largest private houses in England before the siege — the Marquess of Winchester’s residence, built on the site of a medieval castle. Its ruins stand as one of Hampshire’s most significant historical sites.
Within Basingstoke, the Pakistani Muslim community — concentrated in Buckskin (RG22), central Basingstoke (RG21), and the surrounding residential areas — is served by Al Birr Masjid at 35–37 Sarum Hill (RG21 8SS), the Islamic Society of Basingstoke (32 Tweedsmuir Close, Buckskin, RG22 5DR), and the Basingstoke Muslim Welfare Association (BMWA). No Umrah operator has dedicated a page to Basingstoke. This is the first.

The M3 motorway begins at Basingstoke (Junction 7 and 8 are Basingstoke’s primary M3 junctions) and runs northeast toward London and the M25. The M25 Junction 12 connects to the M4 westbound toward Heathrow. This M3→M25→M4 route is Basingstoke’s most direct Umrah airport run — 35–40 miles on motorway, clear at any pre-dawn hour, straightforward navigation with no complex urban roads to navigate.
Detail | London Heathrow (LHR) for Basingstoke Pilgrims |
Distance from Basingstoke town centre | ~35–40 miles northeast via M3/M25/M4 |
Primary route | M3 northeast from Basingstoke (Junction 8 or 7) → M3 continues northeast → M25 Junction 12 → M4 westbound → Heathrow approach. Or M3 → M25 Junction 13 → M4 → LHR. |
Drive time (off-peak, normal traffic) | 38–55 minutes. M3 and M25 can be busy during commuter hours. |
Drive time at 2–3am (pre-dawn) | 32–42 minutes — M3, M25, and M4 completely clear at pre-dawn. Straightforward motorway driving. |
Saudi Airlines direct to Jeddah | Saudi Airlines (Saudia) direct from LHR to Jeddah: approximately 6 hours 30 minutes. No connecting hub. Primary recommendation for Basingstoke Umrah. |
Other Umrah routes from LHR | Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Gulf Air. England’s widest Umrah route selection. |
Taxi from Basingstoke to LHR | Approximately £52–72 for a standard private hire car — longer journey but entirely motorway. |
Train option | Basingstoke station → London Waterloo (~47–55 min) → London Paddington → Heathrow Express (~15 min). Total approximately 80–90 minutes. Car considerably faster for pre-dawn. |
Basingstoke to LHR — entirely motorway: The M3→M25→M4 route from Basingstoke to LHR is a 100% motorway journey — no complex urban roads, no traffic lights, no town centre navigation. At 2–3am, 35 miles of clear motorway takes approximately 32–38 minutes. For Basingstoke pilgrims concerned about pre-dawn driving, this is one of England’s most straightforward long-distance airport runs.
Detail | London Gatwick (LGW) for Basingstoke Pilgrims |
Distance from Basingstoke | ~45–50 miles east via M3/A31/M25/M23 or A30/M3/M25/M23 |
Route | M3 northeast → A31 east → A3/M25 Junction 10 → M23 south → Gatwick. More complex than LHR route. |
Drive time (off-peak) | 50–70 minutes. More complex route than LHR. |
Drive time at 2–3am | 42–55 minutes |
Umrah provision | Saudi Airlines from LGW on certain dates. Extensive Umrah charter packages. |
When LGW recommended | When LGW charter packages offer significantly better 3★ pricing than LHR for specific dates. Less common recommendation for Basingstoke given LHR’s simpler motorway route. |
Taxi from Basingstoke to LGW | Approximately £68–88 |
Detail | Southampton Airport (SOU) for Basingstoke Pilgrims |
Distance from Basingstoke | ~20–22 miles southwest via M3 south → A3090 |
Drive time | 22–30 minutes |
Umrah provision | VERY LIMITED. Southampton does not have practical Umrah routes in 2027. No Saudi Airlines. No Umrah charter capacity to match LHR or LGW. |
Verdict | Close but not viable for Umrah 2027. LHR remains Basingstoke’s primary Umrah airport despite the longer drive. |
Why not Southampton? Southampton Airport (SOU) is just 20–22 miles from Basingstoke — the closest airport. However, Southampton has no practical Umrah provision: no Saudi Airlines direct Jeddah, no meaningful Umrah charter capacity, and no Gulf hub connections that compare to LHR. Despite being the closest airport, SOU is not a viable Umrah option. LHR (35 miles) is the clear Basingstoke Umrah choice in 2027.
All prices include return flights from London Heathrow (LHR, ~35–40 miles northeast via M3, primary) or London Gatwick (LGW, ~45–50 miles east, when charter packages offer better value), Umrah visa, named Makkah hotel with Haram distance in metres before deposit, named Madinah hotel, Rawdah slot pre-booked, and all Saudi Arabia transport. Prices are £20 per person below UK market rates.

The Pakistani Muslim families who came to Basingstoke came to a town that was in the middle of transforming itself. The 1960s expansion of Basingstoke from a small Hampshire market town to a new town with planned housing estates brought workers from many parts of England and beyond — and among them Pakistani Muslim workers and families who settled in the new estates of Buckskin, Winklebury, and the areas west and north of the town centre. They came to streets that were newly built, to a town that was growing, to a Hampshire that did not know them and that they were making their own.
The Basingstoke Muslim Welfare Association (BMWA) describes itself as ‘a non-profit organisation serving the Basingstoke community, particularly the Islamic minority.’ This phrase — ‘the Islamic minority’ — is a precise self-description. Basingstoke’s Muslim community is proportionally smaller than those of many English towns covered in our portfolio: approximately 5–7% of a population of 113,000. But smaller community does not mean lesser aspiration. The Umrah aspiration of Basingstoke’s Pakistani Muslim families is as strong as that of any community in England — and the M3 to Heathrow is as reliable a pre-dawn motorway as any.
Al Birr Masjid at 35–37 Sarum Hill, Basingstoke RG21 8SS is the primary mosque serving Basingstoke’s Muslim community. Located approximately 500 metres southwest of Basingstoke town centre — close enough to walk from the Festival Place shopping centre — the mosque serves daily prayers, Friday Jummah, and the Islamic community needs of the RG21 postcode area. The mosque’s direction of prayer (Qibla) is southeast — towards Makkah at 118° bearing, approximately 4,840 kilometres away. Every prayer at Sarum Hill is oriented toward the same city that the Umrah pilgrims will travel to physically.
The Islamic Society of Basingstoke at 32 Tweedsmuir Close, Buckskin, Hampshire RG22 5DR serves the Buckskin area — the large post-war housing estate west of Basingstoke town centre where a significant proportion of the town’s Pakistani Muslim community has settled. Buckskin’s Islamic Society reflects the community’s presence in this specific residential geography — the housing estate where Pakistani families made their Basingstoke home in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Basingstoke Muslim Welfare Association (BMWA) is a non-profit organisation that provides community welfare and support services to Basingstoke’s Islamic minority. The BMWA’s existence reflects the same community-building instinct that has characterised Pakistani Muslim settlement across England: the recognition that a community needs not just a mosque but also welfare provision, social support, and organised representation. The BMWA serves this function for Basingstoke’s Muslim community.
Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, in 1775. Steventon is approximately 7 miles west of Basingstoke. The Austen family — Jane’s father was Rector of Steventon — moved in the Hampshire gentry circles that included Basingstoke’s Assembly Rooms, which were a centre of local social life. Jane Austen attended balls and social occasions in Basingstoke during her years in Steventon (1775–1801). Her early letters mention Basingstoke several times as the social hub of the surrounding neighbourhood. Jane Austen left Hampshire in 1801 when her father retired and the family moved to Bath; she returned to the county later, dying in Winchester in 1817.
Jane Austen’s novels are about the possibility of transformation through a correct understanding of one’s situation — about characters who begin by misreading themselves and the world around them and who achieve clarity through painful experience and honest reflection. The Umrah aspiration of Basingstoke’s Muslim community requires the same quality of honest intention: the niyyah that precedes the pilgrimage is the intention to come to the Haram correctly, without performance or vanity, with genuine purpose. From the Hampshire countryside that Jane Austen walked to the Haram in Makkah is an enormous distance in every dimension — and it begins with the M3 from Basingstoke at 4am.
Basing House, approximately 2 miles east of Basingstoke in the village of Old Basing, was one of the most dramatic locations of the English Civil War. The Marquess of Winchester — a Catholic nobleman who remained loyal to King Charles I — held Basing House against Parliamentary forces for over two years (1643–1645). Oliver Cromwell himself led the final assault in October 1645. The house was taken, burned, and largely demolished. Among those who survived the siege was the architect and diarist Inigo Jones. The ruins of Basing House — one of England’s greatest pre-Civil War aristocratic houses — are open to visitors as a Hampshire County Council heritage site.

Oliver Cromwell besieged Basing House for two years before it fell — a siege sustained by the conviction that what lay on the other side of the walls was worth the effort and the time. The Marquess of Winchester held his house for two years against the most powerful military force in England because he believed in what he was defending. Conviction sustained over time, against difficulty, toward an outcome that matters: this is the structure of every worthwhile effort.
The Pakistani Muslim families of Buckskin and Sarum Hill have built their community in Basingstoke over sixty years. They have built two mosques, a welfare association, a community network. They have maintained their Islamic practice in a Hampshire new town that was not built for them and that they have made their own. Their aspiration to Umrah is the same quality of sustained intention — pointed toward the Haram in the same direction that every prayer in Al Birr Masjid is pointed: 118° southeast, approximately 4,840 kilometres, to the Kaaba.

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.
Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”
The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.
Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.
Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
