Step 1 — Ihram: Entering the Sacred State

You begin each circuit at the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad), which is embedded in the corner of the Kaaba closest to the door. If you can touch or kiss the Black Stone, you do so; if the crowd prevents it (which it usually does except in very quiet periods), you simply gesture toward it and say ‘Bismillah, Allahu Akbar’ as you pass.
You walk anti-clockwise around the Kaaba, keeping the Kaaba on your left. The circuit is complete when you return to the Black Stone and gesture or touch again. Seven circuits = one Tawaf. After Tawaf, you drink Zamzam water (freely available throughout the Haram) and then proceed to Sa’i — the walking between the two hills of Safa and Marwah. This commemorates Hagar (Hajarah AS), the mother of Ismail (AS), who ran between these two hills searching for water for her infant son while in the desert. When Allah caused Zamzam to spring from the earth, her search ended — and the Sa’i commemorates her act of faith in Allah’s provision.
Sa’i consists of seven lengths — starting from Safa and ending at Marwah. The first length (Safa to Marwah) counts as one; the return (Marwah to Safa) counts as two; and so on. Seven lengths = four full returns plus the initial length from Safa. The Sa’i walkway (Mas’a) is now a covered, air-conditioned passage within the Haram complex — fully accessible at any time. Do I need to speak Arabic to perform Umrah?
No. The rituals can be performed in any language — your intention and Talbiyah can be in English. The specific duas associated with each part of Umrah are in Arabic, but they are brief, phonetically provided in all good Umrah guides, and memorised easily with 2–3 weeks of practice.
Can I perform Umrah if I have never prayed in a mosque before?
Yes. Umrah is open to any sincere Muslim who is an adult (or accompanied child). There is no prerequisite of mosque attendance. The Umrah rituals are explained clearly in our pre-departure guide. Many UK Muslims who perform Umrah describe it as the experience that deepened their practice of prayer afterward rather than a reward for prior practice.
How far in advance should I book my first Umrah?
Ideally 2–4 months before your preferred month for off-peak packages. For Ramadan or school holiday windows (Easter, summer, Christmas), 4–6 months minimum. For specific Ramadan Last 10 Nights dates, 6+ months is recommended — these packages sell out significantly ahead of the month.

What is Ihram?
Ihram is the sacred state entered before crossing the Miqat boundary around Makkah. For men, it involves wearing two plain white unstitched cloths and making the intention for Umrah. For women, it involves any plain modest clothing covering the body (face and hands uncovered). In Ihram, perfume, hair cutting, nail cutting, and marital relations are prohibited until the Umrah is complete.
What is Tawaf?
Tawaf is the circumambulation — walking seven times anti-clockwise around the Kaaba, with the Kaaba on your left. You begin each circuit at the Black Stone (or by gesturing toward it if the crowd prevents physical contact). After seven circuits, you pray two Rakaat near Maqam Ibrahim. Tawaf is the most described ritual by UK first-timers.
What is Sa’i?
Sa’i is walking seven lengths between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hagar’s (AS) search for water for her son Ismail (AS). The walkway (Mas’a) is now a covered, air-conditioned passage within the Haram complex. Seven lengths, starting from Safa, ending at Marwah.
What is Halq and Taqsir?
Halq is the shaving of the head (for men) and Taqsir is trimming the hair. Halq or Taqsir is the final ritual of Umrah — performed after Sa’i. Men shave their entire head (Halq) or trim at least one centimetre from across the head (Taqsir). Women trim approximately one to two centimetres from their hair ends. This action exits the Ihram state. Your Umrah is then complete.
What if I make a mistake during my Umrah?

Do I need to fast on the day of Umrah?
No — there is no obligatory fasting associated with Umrah. Many pilgrims eat a light meal before performing Tawaf and Sa’i for energy, particularly as the Haram visit typically takes 3–5 hours.
Practical First-Timer Questions
What is the Nusuk app and do I need it?
The Nusuk app (nusuk.sa) is the Saudi government’s official pilgrimage management platform. Every pilgrim needs an active Nusuk permit to enter the Haram for Umrah and to visit the Rawdah in Madinah. We register you on Nusuk and secure your permit before departure. You download the app, log in, and the permit is ready on your phone.
How do I count circuits during Tawaf?
Use a tasbih (prayer beads), a digital wrist counter, or count on your fingers. Many first-timers use their phone’s calculator and add 1 after each circuit. Losing count is one of the most common first-timer anxieties — have a counting system ready before you start.
Can I perform Tawaf and Sa’i on different days?
No — Tawaf and Sa’i must be performed in sequence on the same session. Ihram → Tawaf → Two Rakaat → Zamzam → Sa’i → Halq/Taqsir. However, if you need to break for prayer during Tawaf or Sa’i (the obligatory prayer time comes in), you can pause, pray, and resume where you left off.
Is Zamzam water available throughout the Haram?
Yes — Zamzam water is freely available at no cost throughout the Haram on all floors and in the Mas’a walkway. There are no restrictions on how much you can drink. It is Sunnah to drink Zamzam standing, facing the Kaaba, and with an intention (niyyah) as you drink.
What should I do if I feel overwhelmed in the Haram?
Find a quiet corner of the Haram and sit. The Haram has vast indoor areas on multiple levels — you do not need to be in the crowds near the Kaaba to be in the Haram. Make dua quietly, take your time, and when you are ready, continue. Nobody will rush you. There is no schedule that cannot accommodate a moment of quiet.
Can I take photos on my first Umrah?
Photography is not strictly prohibited throughout the Haram. Most pilgrims use their phones for some moments. The most significant first-timer moments — the first sight of the Kaaba, the Tawaf — are experiences where the phone tends to get put away naturally. For the official answer on photography within specific areas of the Haram, consult your imam.
What is the best time to do Tawaf for a first-timer?
Fajr (approximately 4:30–5:30am depending on month) is the best first-timer Tawaf time — coolest temperature, lowest crowds, and the most contemplative atmosphere of the day. In October and November, 10am is also a comfortable and manageable Tawaf time. Avoid midday in summer months.
Before and After Umrah
Should I learn duas before my first Umrah?
Yes — basic duas for Tawaf and Sa’i significantly enrich the experience. You do not need to memorise pages of Arabic — a short dua said with sincere heart at each of the key points (beginning of Tawaf, at Maqam Ibrahim, at Safa, at Marwah) is sufficient and meaningful. Is it recommended to perform more than one Umrah during my first trip?
Yes — after completing your first Umrah and exiting Ihram, you may return to Tan’im (Masjid Aisha, approximately 5km from the Haram) to re-enter Ihram and perform a second Umrah. Many first-timers on 10–14 night packages perform 2–3 Umrahs. The second Umrah is often described as qualitatively different — calmer, more absorbed, more deeply personal.
What can I do after completing Umrah and exiting Ihram?
After exiting Ihram (Halq/Taqsir complete), all Ihram restrictions are lifted. You can change into normal clothing, use perfume, and enjoy normal activities. Many pilgrims spend remaining Makkah nights performing voluntary Tawaf (without Ihram — simply as additional worship), praying in the Haram, reading Quran, making dua, and visiting Makkah’s historic sites through Ziyarat tours.
How will I feel after my first Umrah?
