More Than Just Umrah Packages
QUICK ANSWER: Packages Umrah arranges all-inclusive Umrah packages for Derby pilgrims from £645/pp for 7 nights (3-star, off-peak months). Derby has two airport options: East Midlands Airport (EMA, ~14 miles) and Birmingham Airport (BHX, ~40 miles). EMA is closer but has limited Umrah routes; BHX has better provision. We check both for every Derby quote and advise honestly. Secure your place with a £99 deposit. ATOL protected. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335 — same-day quote.
Derby is a city that does not often appear in the national conversation about UK Muslim communities — but it should. With approximately 40,000–45,000 Muslims in a city of roughly 250,000, Derby’s Muslim population represents approximately 16% of the city — a proportion that is significant and growing. More importantly for the Umrah question, Derby’s Muslim community is genuinely active in its religious observance. The Normanton area of Derby — sometimes described as the most culturally diverse neighbourhood in the East Midlands outside Leicester — has a Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim majority in many of its streets, with mosques, Islamic schools, halal businesses, and community networks that create a strong foundation for pilgrimage intention.
Derby is also underserved by the Umrah travel industry. Most UK Umrah operators have dedicated pages for Birmingham, Leicester, and Nottingham — but dedicated Derby Umrah content is sparse. The practical result is that Derby Muslims often end up using Birmingham-focused packages without guidance specifically calibrated to their local airport situation, their specific community areas, or the particular character of Derby’s Muslim geography. This page corrects that.
Packages Umrah is operated by Uraan Travel Ltd (7 Huxley Avenue, Manchester M8 0SJ). We arrange all-inclusive Umrah packages for Derby pilgrims with ATOL protection and genuine all-inclusive pricing. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335 or visit packagesumrah.co.uk.
Derby pilgrims face a genuine choice: East Midlands Airport (EMA) is 14 miles away — significantly closer — but has limited Umrah routes. Birmingham Airport (BHX) is approximately 40 miles away and has much better Umrah route provision year-round. We explain both honestly and check both for every Derby quote.
East Midlands Airport sits between Derby and Nottingham, approximately 14 miles east of Derby city centre on the A453. It is significantly closer than any other major airport for Derby pilgrims — and significantly less hassle for a family managing Umrah luggage:
Detail | East Midlands Airport (EMA) for Derby Pilgrims |
Distance from Derby city centre | ~14 miles east. Junction 24 of the M1. |
Route from Derby | A52 east to M1 Junction 25 then south to Junction 24, or A514 direct to Castle Donington area. Approximately 20–30 minutes. |
Drive time (off-peak) | 20–30 minutes — one of the shortest UK airport journeys for any major city |
Taxi from Derby | Approximately £25–40 — significantly cheaper than Birmingham Airport alternatives |
Saudi Arabia Umrah routes | Limited. EMA does not operate regular Jeddah or Madinah Umrah services. Some seasonal connecting options via European hubs (Amsterdam, Schiphol; Paris CDG) exist but are not year-round standard Umrah packages. |
When EMA is the right choice | When a suitable EMA connecting route is available for your specific departure dates at a comparable price to BHX. The 20-minute journey from Derby to EMA makes any reasonable EMA route attractive. |
Our approach | We check EMA for every Derby quote. If an EMA Umrah route exists for your dates, we recommend it. Currently, most Derby Umrah packages require BHX. |
Birmingham Airport is approximately 40 miles south-west of Derby — more than twice the distance of EMA — but offers significantly more reliable Umrah connecting flight options:
Detail | Birmingham Airport (BHX) for Derby Pilgrims |
Distance from Derby city centre | ~40 miles southwest |
Primary route | A38 south from Derby to Alfreton, then A38 to M6 Toll or M42 to BHX. Or M1 south to M42 to BHX. |
Alternative route | A514 south through Melbourne to A42, then M42 east to BHX — avoids M6 Toll. |
Drive time (off-peak) | 40–55 minutes |
Drive time (morning traffic) | 55–75 minutes |
Train option | Derby station → Birmingham New Street (~45 mins). Then Birmingham Airport train (~7 mins). Total approximately 60–70 minutes. |
Taxi from Derby to BHX | Approximately £55–80 — higher than EMA but BHX’s route provision justifies it for most Umrah bookings |
Saudi Arabia Umrah routes | Connecting flights via Istanbul, Dubai, or Doha year-round. Wide selection of departure times and airlines. |
Our recommendation | BHX is the standard Derby Umrah departure when EMA does not have a suitable route — which is most of the time. |
Factor | East Midlands Airport (EMA) | Birmingham Airport (BHX) | Winner for Derby |
Distance from Derby | 14 miles | 40 miles | EMA |
Drive time | 20–30 mins | 40–55 mins | EMA |
Taxi cost | £25–40 | £55–80 | EMA |
Train journey | Not direct from Derby to EMA | ~60–70 mins total | BHX (train option) |
Saudi Arabia Umrah routes | Limited — seasonal connecting only | Year-round connecting via major hubs | BHX |
Price for comparable package | Sometimes higher (less competition) | More competitive (larger market) | BHX |
Overall recommendation | Use when route available | Standard Derby Umrah departure | Depends on dates |
Our honest summary: if EMA has a suitable Umrah connecting route for your dates at a comparable all-in price, the 20-minute journey from Derby makes EMA significantly better than the 50-minute BHX drive. We check EMA first for every Derby quote. When EMA comes up empty — which is the majority of bookings — BHX via the M1/M42 route is the practical and reliable choice.
For Derby families planning the airport journey:
All prices are genuinely all-inclusive: return flights (from EMA if available, otherwise BHX), Umrah visa, named Makkah hotel (distance from Haram confirmed in metres before deposit), named Madinah hotel, Rawdah visiting slot pre-booked, and all Saudi Arabia transport. Prices are £20 per person below UK market rates.

Derby’s Muslim community is concentrated primarily in south and west Derby, with Normanton as the undisputed centre of Derby’s Islamic community life. Understanding Derby’s Muslim geography helps explain why this community’s Umrah patterns are distinct from the broader East Midlands region.
Normanton (DE23) is Derby’s most ethnically diverse and Muslim-majority neighbourhood. The Normanton Road and surrounding streets form a commercial corridor that serves Derby’s Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Caribbean communities — halal butchers, South Asian clothing shops, Islamic bookshops, and curry houses interspersed with the community’s mosques. The Normanton area has a Muslim population that is predominantly of Pakistani and Kashmiri heritage, with a growing Bangladeshi community.
For Normanton families, the Umrah booking pattern is consistent: the intention is strong and the community support for pilgrimage is active through the local mosque network. East Midlands Airport is approximately 20–25 minutes from Normanton via the A514 through Chellaston — making EMA the most accessible airport for Normanton pilgrims when suitable Umrah routes are available.
The Arboretum ward (DE1) and Pear Tree (DE23) contain some of Derby’s most densely Muslim-populated streets close to the city centre. The Arboretum area — with its Victorian park at the centre — has a predominantly Pakistani Muslim community that has established deep community roots over two generations. Peartree Road and its surrounding streets are home to active mosque communities and multi-generational Muslim families.
The Jumu’ah gathering at Derby’s mosques — particularly the larger mosques in the Arboretum and Normanton areas — is where the Umrah intention is regularly reinforced and where group bookings are most commonly organised. If you want to understand where Derby’s Umrah travel culture originates, it is in these mosque communities.
Sunny Hill (DE23) and Sinfin (DE24) are south Derby areas with established Pakistani Muslim communities, located near the Rolls-Royce and Toyota manufacturing facilities that have historically employed significant numbers of Derby’s South Asian Muslim workforce. These working-class Muslim communities have a consistent Umrah travel culture — typically booking off-peak months (November, January) for the best price, and often travelling in family groups that include elderly first-generation parents.
A specific and distinctive feature of Derby’s Muslim community that is not found in other UK cities in quite the same way: many of Derby’s first-generation Pakistani and Kashmiri Muslims came specifically to work in Derby’s major manufacturing industries — Rolls-Royce aero engines and Toyota’s UK car manufacturing plant. The Muslim working-class culture of Derby is shaped partly by these industries — communities of shift workers, skilled manufacturing employees, and later their descendants who have pursued professional careers across Derby’s economy.
This industrial heritage has created a Muslim community character that is both deeply observant and practically-minded. Derby’s Muslim Umrah pilgrims are not looking for an experience — they are looking for a well-organised trip that uses their annual leave efficiently, delivers what is promised, and brings them back having performed the pilgrimage correctly. The no-nonsense character of a manufacturing-city Muslim community is reflected in how Derby pilgrims book Umrah: clear prices, confirmed hotels, no surprises.
Derby sits at the junction of several East Midlands communities. Our Derby packages serve:
City/Town | Distance to EMA | Distance to BHX | Muslim Community | Package Notes |
Derby (DE1–DE24) | ~14 miles, A52/M1 J24 | ~40 miles, A38/M42 | ~40,000–45,000 Muslims. Normanton, Arboretum, Peartree dominant areas. | Primary Derby service. EMA checked first, BHX standard. |
Burton upon Trent (DE14–DE15) | ~35 miles to EMA | ~30 miles to BHX | Pakistani Muslim community. Midlands town. | BHX is closer for Burton than EMA — natural BHX catchment. |
Nottingham (NG1–NG7) | ~20 miles to EMA | ~55 miles to BHX | ~70,000 Muslims. Hyson Green, Radford, Forest Fields. | EMA is the natural Nottingham airport. Shared catchment with Derby for EMA. |
Ilkeston (DE7) | ~20 miles to EMA | ~50 miles to BHX | Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim community. Erewash District. | EMA via A609. Close enough for Ilkeston’s Muslim community. |
Long Eaton (NG10) | ~10 miles to EMA | ~45 miles to BHX | Growing Muslim community. South Derbyshire. | Closest of any East Midlands town to EMA. Natural EMA departure. |
Chesterfield (S40–S41) | ~30 miles to EMA | ~55 miles to BHX | Pakistani Muslim community. North Derbyshire. | EMA or MAN both options. M1 access. |
Nottingham connection: Derby and Nottingham are 15 miles apart and share the East Midlands Airport as the closest major airport. Many Nottingham Muslims also look at Derby-focused Umrah packages when searching for East Midlands departure options. Our packages serve both cities through the same EMA/BHX departure framework.
Month | Islamic Period | Derby Notes | Haram Crowds | Price (3★, 7N) |

January 2027 | Rajab 1448 | Derby schools back from Christmas. Joint cheapest. Mild Makkah weather. Good for elderly. | Low | £645/pp |
October 2027 | Jumada al-Awwal | Derby half-term (~25–29 Oct). Best outdoor Tawaf conditions. EMA worth checking. | Low–Moderate | £669/pp |
September 2027 | Rabi al-Thani | Schools back. Good value. Post-summer cooling. Derby Muslim community less busy. | Low | £669/pp |

Seven nights is the practical format for Derby working families — five working days annual leave if departing Thursday. Four Makkah nights, 3 Madinah nights. Complete Umrah, Rawdah visit, and essential Madinah Ziyarat. For Derby’s working Muslim community — many of whom are on shift patterns at Derby’s major employers — the ability to achieve a complete Umrah within a single week of leave is the format that makes pilgrimage consistently achievable. From £645/pp off-peak. £99 deposit.
Ten nights — 6 Makkah nights, 4 Madinah nights — is our most recommended format. Our consistent observation: Derby pilgrims who do 7 nights wish they had done 10. The difference is not just three extra days — it is the difference between ‘I completed the Umrah’ and ‘I was present at the Haram.’ By Makkah night 4 or 5, the emotional intensity of the arrival has settled into a sustainable rhythm of worship. From £695/pp off-peak.
Twelve nights suits Derby families using the full Easter or Christmas school holiday, elderly Derby pilgrims who need the gentler pace that more time gives, and Derby mosque groups wanting the complete programme in both cities. Seven Makkah nights, 5 Madinah nights. From £735/pp off-peak.
Two full weeks — 8 Makkah nights, 6 Madinah nights. For Derby pilgrims for whom this trip represents the fulfilment of a decades-long intention, or for families making a multi-generational pilgrimage, 14 nights is the format that does full justice to both holy cities. Multiple Umrahs, both Makkah mountain climbs for those with fitness, the complete Madinah Ziyarat. From £775/pp off-peak.
Derby’s Muslim community is significantly working class in economic profile — many families are in shift work, skilled trades, or service industries where annual leave is carefully managed. For these Derby working families, the Umrah format that works is typically:
Derby’s mosque communities serve a closely-knit Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim population. Group Umrah from Derby mosques is an established tradition. For groups of 10+:
For Derby’s first-generation Pakistani and Kashmiri community — who came to work at Rolls-Royce and other Derby employers in the 1960s and 1970s — the first Umrah in their 60s or 70s is among the most significant moments of their lives. These Derby elderly pilgrims typically need:
For Derby Muslim women performing Umrah independently — under current Saudi regulations, women aged 18+ can travel without a Mahram. For Derby sisters’ groups and individual women:
Ramadan 2027 begins approximately 8 February 2027. Derby’s Muslim community has a consistent Ramadan Umrah tradition, with particular demand from Normanton mosque communities. BHX Ramadan capacity for East Midlands fills early — book by September 2026 for good availability.
Ramadan Period | Approx. Dates | Price (3★, 7N) | Booking Deadline | Derby Notes |
First Ashra (1–10) | ~8–17 Feb 2027 | From £879/pp | October 2026 | Derby schools in term. Working parents Umrah typical. Strong Normanton community demand. |
Second Ashra (11–20) | ~18–27 Feb 2027 | From £899/pp | August 2026 | BHX/EMA Ramadan seats reducing. Book early. |

Which airport should Derby pilgrims use for Umrah?
East Midlands Airport (EMA, 14 miles) is closer, but has limited Saudi Arabia Umrah routes. Birmingham Airport (BHX, 40 miles) has much better Umrah provision. We check both for every Derby quote — EMA first, BHX as standard when EMA has no suitable route.
How far is East Midlands Airport from Derby?
Approximately 14 miles east of Derby city centre, near Castle Donington. Junction 24 of the M1. Drive time: 20–30 minutes off-peak. This is one of the shortest airport journeys from any UK city of Derby’s size.
How far is Birmingham Airport from Derby?
Approximately 40 miles south-west. The A38 south then A42/M42 is the primary route. Drive time: 40–55 minutes off-peak. By train: Derby station to Birmingham New Street (~45 mins), then Birmingham Airport train (~7 mins) — approximately 60–70 minutes total.

Why is there so little Derby-specific Umrah content available?
Derby is underserved by the Umrah industry — most operators focus on Birmingham, Leicester, and Nottingham. We have created this dedicated Derby page specifically because Derby’s Muslim community deserves the same quality of locally-relevant information as larger Muslim cities.

Are Derby Umrah packages ATOL protected?
Yes — every flight-inclusive Derby package is ATOL protected through Uraan Travel Ltd. ATOL Certificate issued at booking.
Derby’s Muslim community has built a life in this city across two generations — starting in the mills and factories, building the mosques and madrasahs, raising British-born children who are now professionals and parents themselves. Through all of it, the intention to stand before the Kaaba has remained constant. It is there in the family conversations after Sunday lunch in Normanton. It is there in the mosque announcements before Jumu’ah in the Arboretum. It is the consistent aspiration of a community that has earned its place in this city and wants to make its pilgrimage with the same dignity and organisation it brings to everything else.
We provide the organisation. All-inclusive packages from £645/pp — the cheapest genuinely all-inclusive Umrah price for Derby pilgrims. East Midlands Airport checked first; Birmingham Airport as the reliable alternative. Named hotel before deposit. ATOL Certificate at booking. £99 deposit secures your place.
Derby deserves a properly served Umrah market. We are here.

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.
Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”
The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.
Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.
Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
