We arrange both and advise which is better for your specific dates. Secure your place with a £99 deposit. Leicester is one of the UK’s most remarkable cities in a specific and documented way: it was the first city in England to have a majority non-white population — a milestone recorded in the 2011 census that has only deepened in the decade since. Its Muslim community of approximately 72,000–80,000 people is one of the most diverse of any UK city its size. Unlike Bradford’s Mirpuri Kashmiri majority or Birmingham’s predominantly Pakistani character, Leicester’s Muslim community reflects multiple South Asian heritage communities — Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Gujarati, and East African Asian Muslims alongside Somali, Yemeni, and Arab communities. The Gujarati Muslim community in particular — concentrated in Belgrave and parts of north Leicester — gives the city a religious and cultural character found in few other UK cities.
In all these communities, the intention to perform Umrah is both consistent and active. Leicester’s Muslim community travels for Umrah at a significant rate — estimates suggest 3,000–8,000 Leicester Muslims perform Umrah annually, an extraordinary number for a city of approximately 350,000 people. The pilgrimage is woven into Leicester’s Muslim community life through its mosques, its madrasahs, and the family conversation that happens in Highfields, Evington, Spinney Hills, and Belgrave every year when the Saudi season opens.
Packages Umrah is operated by Uraan Travel Ltd (7 Huxley Avenue, Manchester M8 0SJ). We arrange Umrah packages for Leicester pilgrims with genuinely all-inclusive pricing and ATOL protection. WhatsApp +44 7737 144335 or visit packagesumrah.co.uk.
Leicester has no commercial international airport within the city. Every Leicester Umrah pilgrim must travel to either East Midlands Airport (EMA, approximately 30 miles north-east) or Birmingham Airport (BHX, approximately 35 miles south-west) to depart. Both are accessible from Leicester within 30–45 minutes. Which is better depends on your specific route and dates — and we check both for every Leicester quote.
East Midlands Airport is the closest major airport to Leicester — approximately 28–32 miles north-east via the A46 and M1 junction 24A. Despite being significantly closer than Birmingham Airport, EMA presents a specific challenge for Umrah packages:
Detail | East Midlands Airport (EMA) |
Distance from Leicester city centre | ~28–32 miles northeast |
Route from Leicester | A46 to M1 Junction 24A, then follow signs to EMA. Straight and simple. |
Drive time | 25–35 minutes (off-peak) |
Drive time (morning traffic) | 35–50 minutes |
Saudi Arabia Umrah routes | Very limited. EMA does not operate regular Jeddah or Madinah Umrah services. Some seasonal connecting options via European hubs (Amsterdam, Paris) exist but are not standard for all-inclusive Umrah packages. |
Taxi from Leicester | Approximately £30–45 |
When EMA works for Umrah | If a specific EMA connecting route is available for your dates at comparable price — worth taking given the shorter journey. We check this for every Leicester quote. |
Overall assessment | Closer, but route limitation is the main constraint for Umrah travel from Leicester. |
Birmingham Airport is approximately 35–40 miles south-west of Leicester city centre — a slightly longer journey than EMA but offering significantly more Umrah routing options:
Detail | Birmingham Airport (BHX) for Leicester Pilgrims |
Distance from Leicester city centre | ~35–40 miles southwest |
Route from Leicester | A426/M69 to M6 Junction 3A, then M42 to BHX. Or A46 to M69 direct. |
Drive time (off-peak) | 35–45 minutes |
Drive time (morning traffic) | 45–60 minutes |
Saudi Arabia Umrah routes | Connecting flights via Istanbul, Dubai, or Doha to Jeddah and Madinah. Year-round Umrah packages available. |
Taxi from Leicester | Approximately £35–55 |
Train option from Leicester | Leicester station → Birmingham New Street (~1 hour). Then train to Birmingham Airport (~7 mins). Total approximately 75–85 minutes. |
Overall assessment | The practical primary choice for most Leicester Umrah packages due to route availability. |
Unlike some competitors who default to BHX for Leicester or claim EMA routes that barely exist, our approach is straightforward: when you request a Leicester Umrah quote, we check EMA first (because it is closer) and BHX as the backup. If EMA has a suitable Umrah connecting route for your specific dates at a comparable price, we recommend it and save you the extra 15-minute drive. If EMA does not have a suitable route — which is most of the time — BHX is the practical choice. You receive an honest answer, not an answer driven by whichever airport is more convenient for us to book.
Important note for Leicester pilgrims comparing quotes: some travel agencies advertise Leicester Umrah packages from East Midlands Airport that, when examined, involve inconvenient connections with long layovers that make the 30-minute EMA advantage completely irrelevant. A 2-hour connection advantage from BHX via a direct hub airline may serve you better than a 30-minute shorter drive from EMA via an indirect routing. We explain the actual flight plan before you pay the deposit.
For Leicester Umrah families managing the airport journey:
M69 westbound from Leicester — a direct motorway link that is one of the UK’s most straightforward airport drives. The M69 runs directly from the edge of Leicester to the M6, then M42 to BHX. Junction 1 of the M69 is accessible from Leicester’s western edge (near Braunstone). Approximately 35–45 minutes off-peak. Early morning Umrah departures on the M69 at 3–4am: typically 30–35 minutes with no traffic.
A46 northbound from Leicester to Castle Donington, then minor roads or A453 to EMA. Alternatively, M1 northbound from junction 21 to junction 24A. Approximately 25–35 minutes. Very straightforward — EMA’s signage from the M1 and A453 is clear.
A family of 4–6 with Umrah luggage is far better served by a pre-booked private hire than by negotiating trains with multiple suitcases. Leicester to BHX: approximately £35–55. Leicester to EMA: approximately £30–45. Book the vehicle the day before — do not rely on ride-hailing apps at 3am.
For Leicester mosque groups of 10+, a hired minibus or coach from Leicester directly to the departure airport is the standard format. This transforms an early-morning logistics problem into a group departure experience — everyone assembles at the mosque, boards together, and the pilgrimage has effectively started from the Leicester car park.
All prices below are genuinely all-inclusive: return flights from BHX or EMA (as available and confirmed), Umrah visa, named Makkah hotel with Haram distance in metres confirmed before deposit, named Madinah hotel, Rawdah visit pre-booked, and all Saudi Arabia transport. These prices are £20 per person below UK market rates for comparable all-inclusive packages.

Leicester’s Muslim community has a character that makes it genuinely different from any other UK city’s Muslim population. Understanding that character matters for understanding how Umrah is planned, booked, and experienced by Leicester Muslims.
Highfields (LE2) is Leicester’s most densely Muslim-populated area and in many ways the heart of the city’s Islamic community life. The area around Highfields, Belgrave Gate, and the surrounding streets contains some of Leicester’s oldest and most active mosques. The Muslim community here is predominantly Pakistani and Bangladeshi, with long-established community structures. For Highfields families, the Umrah planning cycle is predictable: the intention is renewed at Ramadan, the booking often happens in the months immediately following, and the departure is typically in November, January, or the Easter window.
From Highfields, Birmingham Airport is accessed via the A46 south then M69 west — approximately 35–40 minutes. This is one of the most direct Leicester-to-BHX routes available from any central Leicester neighbourhood.
Evington (LE5) is an established South Asian Muslim area of east Leicester — predominantly Pakistani and Bangladeshi families in an area that has evolved from the first wave of South Asian settlement in the 1960s and 1970s to an established, multi-generational community. Evington has several active mosques and a strong community network. Umrah travel from Evington is consistent and multi-generational — the same families who brought parents for Hajj in the 1990s are now taking their own adult children for Umrah. From Evington, the A6030 gives direct access to the M1 north (for EMA) or the A46 south-west (for BHX).
Spinney Hills (LE5) is one of Leicester’s most significantly Muslim-populated wards — with a concentrated Pakistani Muslim community around the Spinney Hill Park and St Saviours Road areas. The community here has strong mosque attendance and active Islamic supplementary education (madrasah) provision. Spinney Hills has a specific Umrah culture: families plan group trips within extended family networks, often 10–20 family members from multiple households in the same area travelling together on the same package. For these Spinney Hills family groups, our group rate from £625/pp (10+) is the most relevant format.
Belgrave (LE4) is perhaps the most distinctive area of Leicester’s Muslim geography — because it is the primary settlement area of Leicester’s Gujarati Muslim community. Leicester has one of the UK’s largest Gujarati Muslim populations — families originally from the Gujarat state of India, many of whom came to Leicester via East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania) in the 1970s. The Gujarati Muslim community in Belgrave brings a specific cultural and religious tradition to the city: a Sufi-influenced Islam in many cases, a strong business culture, and family structures that maintain close connections to the Hajj and Umrah tradition.
For Leicester’s Gujarati Muslim pilgrims, the Umrah planning process often involves coordination across extended family networks in Leicester, Birmingham, and occasionally London — because the Gujarati Muslim community is geographically spread across these three cities. Family group packages of 10–20 are common.
St Matthews (LE1) is a densely populated inner-city area adjacent to the city centre with a mixed Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Somali Muslim community. Braunstone (LE3) has a growing Pakistani and East African Muslim community in West Leicester. Westcotes (LE3) similarly has an established Pakistani Muslim community along Narborough Road — one of Leicester’s most culturally diverse streets. For these West Leicester communities, the M69 junction at Braunstone Gate is one of Leicester’s most convenient BHX access points.
North Leicester’s Muslim communities — concentrated in Rushey Mead (LE4) and parts of Beaumont Leys (LE4) — are more recently established and include significant Somali and East African Muslim populations alongside Pakistani families who have moved north from the traditional Highfields and Evington settlement areas. The Umrah intention in these communities is consistent with the wider Leicester Muslim pattern: high pilgrimage frequency, family-group travel format, and strong preference for off-peak months that offer the best value.
Our Leicester packages serve the broader East Midlands Muslim community. Leicester is the largest and most accessible hub for a significant geography of East Midlands Muslim pilgrims:
City/Town | Distance to BHX | Distance to EMA | Muslim Community | Notes |
Leicester (LE1–LE5) | ~35 miles, M69 | ~30 miles, A46/M1 | ~72,000–80,000 Muslims. Multi-ethnic South Asian and Somali communities. | Our primary Leicester service area. |
Loughborough (LE11–LE12) | ~50 miles to BHX | ~20 miles to EMA | Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim community. Loughborough University has Muslim students. | EMA is much closer for Loughborough. Worth checking EMA routes. |
Hinckley (LE10) | ~30 miles to BHX | ~45 miles to EMA | Pakistani community. West Leicestershire market town. | BHX is the natural airport for Hinckley. |
Coventry (CV1–CV6) | ~25 miles to BHX | ~45 miles to EMA | Large Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim community. Active Umrah travel. | BHX is the natural Coventry airport. Often in Coventry-focused packages. |
Nottingham (NG1–NG7) | ~55 miles to BHX | ~20 miles to EMA | ~70,000 Muslims. Hyson Green, Radford, Forest Fields Pakistani community. | EMA natural for Nottingham. BHX an option for Umrah routes. |
Derby (DE1–DE3) | ~40 miles to BHX | ~25 miles to EMA | Pakistani and Bangladeshi community. Active Muslim community. | EMA or BHX depending on route availability. |

Seven nights is the most practical format for Leicester working families — five working days annual leave if departing Thursday. Four Makkah nights and 3 Madinah nights. Complete Umrah, Rawdah visit, essential Madinah Ziyarat. For Leicester first-time pilgrims or for those who can only realistically take a week away, this format makes Umrah achievable rather than a distant aspiration. From £645/pp off-peak. Secure with £99 deposit.
Ten nights — 6 Makkah nights, 4 Madinah nights — is our most recommended format for Leicester pilgrims. Our most common observation from returning Leicester pilgrims: those who did 7 nights wish they had done 10. The extra three Makkah days are the days when the experience deepens beyond the ritual into something more sustained. The Haram becomes a place you inhabit rather than visit. From £695/pp off-peak.
Twelve nights suits Leicester families using the full Easter or Christmas school holiday window, elderly Leicester pilgrims who benefit from a gentler pace, and Leicester mosque groups wanting the full programme in both cities. Seven Makkah nights, 5 Madinah nights. From £735/pp off-peak.
Two full weeks — 8 Makkah nights, 6 Madinah nights. For Leicester pilgrims making their first Umrah a comprehensive one, or for those returning after years away, 14 nights gives both holy cities the time they deserve. Multiple Umrahs from Masjid Aisha. Both Makkah mountain climbs for those with the fitness. The complete Madinah Ziyarat. And the specific gift of sitting in Madinah’s gardens without checking a departure countdown. From £775/pp off-peak.
Leicester’s Gujarati Muslim community has a specific Umrah planning culture that differs subtly from the Pakistani-origin majority pattern. Gujarati Muslim family groups tend to be larger (10–20 people across extended family), to involve more careful advance planning, and to include both Makkah and Madinah as equal priorities (partly reflecting the Gujarati Muslim tradition of visiting both cities with specific spiritual intentions for each). For Leicester Gujarati Muslim families:
Leicester’s Somali community — primarily in Highfields, St Matthews, and Rushey Mead — has a significant and growing Umrah travel culture. For many Leicester Somali families, the first Umrah is a milestone — the family’s first collectively planned religious pilgrimage since resettlement in the UK. The practical format most common for Leicester Somali Umrah is a small family group of 4–8 travelling together, typically in the off-peak months (November, October, January) when prices are lowest and the Haram is most accessible.
We handle enquiries from Leicester Somali families in English throughout the booking process. The Saudi Umrah visa process applies equally to all nationalities who hold valid UK passports or residence documents — we advise on documentation requirements for any specific situation.
For Leicester families with children in Leicester City Council or Leicestershire County schools, the key Umrah windows are:
Leicester has an extensive mosque network serving its diverse Muslim population. Leicester Central Mosque, the mosques of Highfields and Evington, the Gujarati-community mosques of Belgrave, and the mosques serving Leicester’s Somali community all have Umrah group travel traditions. For Leicester mosque groups of 10 or more:
The University of Leicester and De Montfort University have combined Muslim student populations. For Leicester Muslim students, Umrah in the Easter or Christmas vacation from £645/pp is the most accessible UK pilgrimage format. University Islamic society group rates (£625/pp for 10+) make the cost even more accessible. We welcome Leicester university Islamic society group enquiries.
For Leicester’s first-generation South Asian Muslims — those who came to Leicester in the 1960s and 1970s and have spent their lives building the community — the first Umrah in their 60s, 70s, or beyond is often the realisation of a decades-long intention. For these Leicester elderly pilgrims, we specifically recommend:
Ramadan 2027 begins approximately 8 February 2027 (subject to moon sighting). Leicester’s Muslim community is particularly active in Ramadan Umrah — Leicester has a higher proportion of Ramadan Umrah travellers relative to city size than many UK cities, reflecting its strong Islamic community culture. Book Ramadan packages from Leicester by September 2026 at the latest. BHX Ramadan seat demand is very high from the East Midlands.
Ramadan Period | Approx. Dates | Price (3★, 7N) | Deadline | Leicester Notes |
First Ashra (1–10) | ~8–17 Feb 2027 | From £879/pp | October 2026 | Schools in term. Leicester parents-only Umrah typical. Strong BHX demand. |
Second Ashra (11–20) | ~18–27 Feb 2027 | From £899/pp | August 2026 | BHX seats rapidly filling. Book well in advance for this period. |
Last Ashra (21–29) | ~28 Feb–8 Mar 2027 | From £979/pp | July 2026 | Laylatul Qadr. Highest Leicester Ramadan demand. Book immediately. |

Which airport do Leicester Umrah pilgrims fly from?
Leicester has no commercial international airport. Most Leicester Umrah packages depart from Birmingham Airport (BHX, approximately 35–40 miles, 35–45 minute drive) which has the most reliable Umrah routes. East Midlands Airport (EMA, approximately 30 miles, 25–35 minute drive) is checked for every Leicester quote — if a suitable EMA route exists for your dates, we recommend it.
Is East Midlands Airport or Birmingham Airport better for Leicester Umrah?
EMA is closer (30 miles vs 35 miles) but has very limited Saudi Arabia Umrah routes. BHX is slightly further but has significantly better Umrah flight provision year-round. We check both for every Leicester quote and recommend whichever offers the better route for your specific dates.

Leicester’s Muslim community has built something remarkable in this city. In the same streets where Pakistani families arrived in the 1960s, their grandchildren now run mosques and businesses. In the Gujarati Muslim community of Belgrave, the East African Asian journey — from Gujarat to Uganda to Leicester — has become a three-generation story of resilience and faith. In the Somali community of Highfields, families who arrived with almost nothing have built community structures and raised British children who are now planning their first Umrah.
All of these Leicester Muslims share the same intention: to stand before the Kaaba. The logistics — EMA or BHX, 7 nights or 10, November or Easter — are different for every family. Our job is to work out those logistics for you, honestly, based on what is actually available and what genuinely serves your interests. Named hotel before deposit. No surprise additions. ATOL protection from booking.

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. It is open to all Muslims worldwide, regardless of age or gender, provided women under 45 are accompanied by a Mahram.
Hajj is the compulsory annual pilgrimage performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed throughout the year and is often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage.”
The actual rituals of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — can be completed in a few hours. However, most pilgrims spend 7 to 14 days in Saudi Arabia to maximise their time in worship at the Haram.
Umrah can be performed throughout the year. However, Ramadan is considered the most spiritually rewarding time, as performing Umrah during this month holds the reward equivalent to Hajj. January to March also offer cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.
Our Umrah packages typically include return flights from the UK, hotel accommodation in both Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, Umrah visa processing, and 24/7 customer support. Full details are listed on each individual package page.
